My House Smells Like a Litter Box

@msop04 and @yssie ,
I bought whatever was cheapest on amazon. I bought the Bissell featherweight and dirt devil simpli stick. I think they are $20. I counted 6 of them in my house. One in each bathroom upstairs, one in my kitchen, one in my basement and one in my garage.
I prefer the bissell one bc the mouth is thinner so it gets into smaller areas. I think they didn’t have any in stock when I tried to purchase more, so I bought the dirt devil instead. One of my vacuums I’ve had since 2007. The suction is fine for what I need them for. Mostly hair, cat litter and crumbs on hard surfaces. Especially cat hair around and on top of my kitchen stools and island. When I try sweep my floors the hairs just fly around and fall right back into place.
The garage one is handy for my car too. I just pull my car into my garage and vacuum it out. Also it’s great for the doormats and stairs in the garage.
I have mostly wood downstairs so I will even use them to vacuum the cat hairs on my stairs as well. I find when I try to sweep the stairs, the hairs just fly everywhere. The vacuum is so much more convenient and easy.
I also have a Dyson but it’s really hard to bring back and forth upstairs.
When company comes over I just hide the vacuums in the nearest bedroom closets. Lol!

We have 2 cats and 3 litter boxes. We've been using Dr. Elsey's multi-cat littler (blue) for years now and it's fantastic.

We clean out the litter box 3-4 times a day so there's never anything sitting in there for more than a few hours. We keep all 3 boxes in one area of the house (in our gym/cat room). Rather than going to the trash outside 3-4 times a day after cleaning the box, we bought a baby diaper genie and use small plastic bags to put the waste in and then put those bags in the diaper genie. It's amazing, it totally locks in 100% of the smell. We don't have kids so our friends think it's hilarious we own a diaper genie for our cats. Hey it works! :)

Such a good idea... I'm ordering a Bissell for the laundry room and our master bath AS I WRITE THIS! ** it's back in stock! **
Thanks so much!

I had the same problem you, @House Cat Both my cats appeared to be using their 4 litter boxes. Yet every time I came home, I was greeted by the smell as I walked in.
It turns out that a stray cat had been urinating on my doorstep, and had also sprayed the front door. Opening the door brought the odour into the house. It was surprising how strong it was, and how long the odour persisted indoors.

I changed her litter and changed out her second litter box. I already had one litter box that looks like a storage tub but the other one was one that looked like a bubble that the cat walks into. Now it’s a tub style box too.

I also changed her soft food out. I researched and there are foods that are less stinky, we’ll see.

She has her own bedroom still. She only uses it to sleep in there at night. That is the room that usually smells the worst, but today it smells nice.

My kids said the rest of my house doesn’t smell like cat box. That was nice to hear but somehow, I smell it.

Thanks everyone for your help!!

I have a different approach suggestion. I have 2 cats, one of them had the stinkiest poop ever; it would stink up the whole house and linger for a long time after scooping. I mentioned to the vet, and she suggested pro-biotics. I gave her a round (first time when she was just under a year) and it was a miracle. She has a sensitive digestive system. She is 8 now and about every 6 months to a year or so, the problem comes back when her gut gets out of balance, so I buy a box and give it to her once a day.
I sprinkle it on her food. She enjoys it and licks the bowl. Its like a powder (I think it is chicken flavored) that you sprinkle on. You can use it with dry or wet food.

This is it:

Oh, and I also scoop 2x a day; once in the morning and evening. Sometimes more if I am home; I am a little OCD about not letting poop stay in the box. My guests tell me that my house does not smell like cat. I think I am immune so I would not know.
Good luck!

I wonder if the odor has penetrated your wood floors. It would not show with the uv light if the urine is in the joists. You may have to go over each and every inch of your house to locate the smell. Super clean an area with vinegar, baking soda and other disinfectants then follow up with a deodorizer. Shut off that room for a week and enter. See if you smell it in there. If so then you have isolated an area for treatment. If not, then go on to the next space....If this does not work, the drywall and floors may need to be replaced and painted and floors sanded in the offending areas. Drapes should be cleaned as well. There is a you tube video by a guy who cleans cat and dog pee out of carpets and he is the pet pee rug cleaner. Interesting to watch the various videos and informative. Some cleaners won't work due to ph. Also, I wonder if a change in diet will help the odor. We have a cat and I scoop out at least once a day. Now we just rescued a puppy and the pee and poop accidents on my persian carpets is a real pain as I make sure it does not soak down through the pad and floor.
