Spanx has been mentioned an awful lot on various threads as a great underdress slimmer. This weekend, I took a little trip to get myself a pair and thought I''d share what I found. Nothing profound or anything, but I was planning to order them off the spanx website and I''m really glad I went in person.

Originally, I thought I''d want the Slim Cognito Seamless Mid-Thigh Bodysuit $68.00
Description
**Go undercover with the SPANX Slim Cognito Mid-Thigh Bodysuit! This shaper comfortably shapes problem areas, accentuates your waistline, minimizes your tummy and thighs, lifts your rear, and makes inches seem to disappear! The detachable straps attach to your bra to keep the bodysuit in place and allow you to wear the bra that''s best for you - and your outfit! And to avoid the flat, uni-butt look that many shapers give your backside, Slim-Cognito offers "The Great Divide." You won''t feel the subtle butt separator, but the natural perky shape won''t be lost on those in your wake!
Fabric Content: 80% Nylon, 18% Spandex/Elastane, 2% Cotton**

I thought it''d be perfect because it has little hooks so you can attach your own bra into and prevent any rolling down. This is a serious undergarment!! I had to struggle a little to get it one, because it is very, very, very tight and strong -- but it certainly does hold you in. There are also no seams which is great, however, it''s a little thick and i thought i might be very hot with it on.

Then, I came across the Higher Power $34.00
Description
Just how high does Higher Power go? Let''s just say the savvy women at SPANX took the Power Panties and extended the control above the waistline -- all the way up to just the south of the "twin peaks." Higher Power eliminates VPL, and slims, smoothes and shapes the figure from the lower thighs up through the midriff.
Fabric Content: 87% Nylon, 13% Lycra® Spandex/Elastane

While, I couldn''t try it on, the salesgirl explained that it''s a thinner material than the first option. It didn''t have the bra hooks, but it was half the price and basically made the same promise as the other. I took it home and tried it on and thought it was brilliant. Much easier to get on and much thinner and more breathable and it didn''t roll down -- yet still holds everything in place...
My only complaint is that there is a seam up the front and back, kind of like the one on pantyhose and if your dress is super tight/thin material, you might be able to see the seam.

Hope that helps.

Also, I was told that spanx goes on sale in July (something about an anniversary) which was too late to help me, but maybe some others...

Thanks so much for sharing Lulu ~ I had been looking at those same 2 products and wondering which one - no one here carries spanx.

In fact, I was just thinking about the slim cognito today and wondering how hot it would feel - mainly because, while temps are normally around mid 80''s in this area in late May (our wedding), temps have been so high this year, then this last week we had temps in the 90''s and today it hit 104!!!! It''s miserable - especially for APRIL!!!! So I was driving in my car w/ AC on full blast thinking to myself "imagine wearing a wedding dress on a day like this... and imagine wearing a tight, hot girdle type thing underneath... ewwww!!!"

I have a pair (don''t remember the name) but it sucks in my belly and goes to mid thigh. It was rolling down ALL night! Drove me crazy so I would suggest the first one with the bra hooks (I know what you mean about constricting. I tried it on and it was crazy. The slit kind of creeped me out too!)

Ok, I was sure I was going to buy the Higher Power but for some reason, I let myself get talked into the Slim Cognito! I didn't even try it on till I got home and boy was it tight, but in a good way! I didn't use the bra attachment thingies but it definitely was seamless and didn't show through my dress at all. I just gotta tell you, I didn't pee the entire night! Sorry if that's TMI, but the slit thing freaked me out too, Tacori!!! I got married in February and I had bare legs so it didn't make me too warm but it was definitely constricting. I must say that as I look in the photos from my wedding, I do see my belly sticking out a bit so I'm not sure how much it REALLY holds you in but it sure gives you the sense that everything is sucked in! I don't know if I'll ever wear it again but it's definitely a good product!!!

The rolling down part is worrying me... I was planning on not wearing a bra so I didn''t know if the one w/ the bra hook will stay up well without being hooked to a bra? So the slit is to pee through??? Eww!

I have the one with the bra hooks. I wore it to a couple of different weddings i went to last summer. It was definitely hot, but i thought that was better than feeling like i had fat rolls

. I had the one without the hooks and it rolled down the entire i had it on.

The pee hole freaked me out at first, but after about 5 cosmo''s i really had to go... It worked out just fine

Good point about the fat rolls vs. feeling hot. Hmmm, now maybe I''m thinking I might need to find a bra so I can wear the one with bra hooks... crap, it never ends does it? My list of things to buy, to do, to try on...

teebee, I am not sure if it would hold up without hooking into your bra. Maybe someone can do an experiment

My sister got a stomach thing at kohls. I guess it looks like a huge ace bandaid and she loves it. She only has problems with her tummy so she didn''t need the shorts part.

Are there any spanx that don''t have the seam down the middle of the front? I need them for some of my dresses, but the seam is so noticable through the fabric, that its a catch 22...do I let my belly stick out or do I let every one know that I''m wearing a girdle? What''s a girl to do?

i wore my spanx to work yesterday under my suit just to see about the rolling down issue (this is the version w/o bra hooks) and i didn''t have a problem at all. it stayed up the entire day and while i probably did adjust it a few times to pull it up a little, it wasn''t as though it was rolling down below my waist...

appletini: I really don''t know if there are other spanx w/o seams...perhaps a letter writing campaign is in order

Regarding the rolling down issue, I had the one that does attach to the bra (SlimCognito) but I didn't attach it and it didn't roll down at all--and I was dancing my butt off all night! And in case you're wondering, the reason why I didn't attach it to the bra was because I was wearing a strapless bra and I was concerned that if it decide to move down, it would pull my bra down with it! Goofy, I know, but when you're a bride you think of all these crazy things that could happen!

I ordered the Slim Cognito from www.freshpair.com and it''s on it''s way to me now! I''ll let you guys know what I think once it gets here. I was planning on wearing it hooked to my strapless bra....we''ll see how that works. If it wants to pull my bra down I''ll try it without hooking it on, but I really don''t want it to roll down either!

As far as the hot vs. fat rolls thing....I don''t want to be RIDICULOUSLY uncomfortable, but I think hot is a little better than fat rolls, for me at least.

I didn''t think it was uncomfortable (the version I have). It only rolled down at the top for maybe the first inch, but enough to bother me. Maybe I should have gone with a smaller size.
