Hello There!
35.gif

As some of you remember that I had some major eczema on my hands and it was spreading. After going to the doctor then who reffered me to the dermatologist, 5 different creams, putting on gloves for everything, after going on steroids nothing has improved, the only thing that I was left with was an extra 5 lbs from the the Prednisone. UGH, nothing worked!

Then I started to look at what could be the problem... After reading on the net many sleepless nights, I decided that it was probably from within, the first obvious thing to look at was my diet. Ok... Sure, why not? I was obiding to the vegetarian diet for over a year now and quite frankly, it wasn''t working great for me, I always felt bloated on this diet and tired with all the carbs I was ingesting. So after many more days of thinking, I decided to get back on eating meat. I started with fish and a little of poultry. I cut out all of the bread, pasta, rice, cakes, cookies... you know, all the crap that humans can possible make! Not only I felt better almost instantly, the most amazing transformation happens after 7 days: My eczema was actually healing. All the inflammation I had in my fingers is finally gone and my body is working hard at making new cells to repair my broken and damaged skin on my fingers. I also had several patches of "Granuloma Annulare" on my thigh and these went away as well... looks like I am on the mend! My facial skin is also clearing up and I look better ( and feel better too! ). I guess that I am carbohydrate sensitive. Right now I am eating about 50g or less a day, and I feel quite good. Maybe switching diet will take care of my eczema indefinately, lower my cholesterol and triglyceride and also the weight on the scale :P I am walking 1 hour a day already, so hopefully, coupling this with diet, i should look and feel better in several months...

Doctors and people with diplomas couldn''t even help me. As some of you know, I am a nail technician, and the dermatologist told me to "quit doing nails". Who does give advice like that?! I know it was probably the most obvious thing to him, but to me, I cannot live without that income so it wasn''t an option, and even if I could, it was not even the RIGHT option!

I just wanted to share with all of you my findings... we are all so different from each other, there is not one magic cure! We may cook with the same water, but we all end up with different muffins!

Hey Amethyste- I am so glad you have found the solution. As a girl with allergies, I think there is a lot of stuff that is linked to them. My husband had a ringing in his ear for months, and I suggested to
him that he give up dairy to see if that helped. I had heard that children who have a lot of ear infections have had success giving up dairy, and no more infections. He tried it and it worked! No more
ringing.

I had a lot of allergies as a small child and have done 4 rounds of immunotherapy in my life. I struggle giving up bread. It is the thing that calls my name. It has been suggested that the thing you crave
the most is the thing that you are most sensitive too. Good luck! I hope this is a long term solution for you! It sounds like you are on the right track for sure!

I am so glad that your skin is healing itself! Wonderful. I also found that I feel better and am more peppy when I eat healthy - more protein and low carbs. Don't get me wrong, I mean less refined carbs. I eat plenty of high fiber high water content carbs like tons of fruit and veggies, whole grains. Just not the bread, refined sugar and etc. It has lifted my mood and my skin cleared up, too. I am so happy for you!!!

I''m so glad to hear that you found the cause of your eczema and that you are feeling better, Amytheste. Congratulations! Much happiness to you and your health!

I''m sooo glad to hear that your skin is getting better and that you found the root cause! Take good care of yourself.

Hi,

You''re not carbohydrate sensitive. Chances are you''re gluten intollerant and/or have a wheat allergy. Both of those can cause major skin issues/eczema. Once you''ve healed up, test out small amounts of brown rice every day and see if the problem comes back. If not, then you at least have one "comfort" food. Corn should also be okay.

Ditto. Gluten intolerance (aka Celiac Disease) is very common and can cause a multitude of skin issues. There''s even a form of it called "Tropical Sprue" which involves a very painful rash.

Ahhh, that''s very interesting. I love PS...always learn something new. Thanks, MC and Hudson!

Amethyste, so glad you feel better now!

This is very interesting.

About 4 years ago I was diagnosed with what is a rare genetic condition called Darier''s Disease, which manifests itself as what can be a very, very severe skin rash. I have a mild form luckily, apparently it can get so bad it drives sufferers to suicide.

There''s no cure obviously, and the only known means to control it is topical steroid cream.

From the beginning of this year I''ve been very careful with my diet, probably the main things I have cut down on are refined carbohydrates (although I still eat pasta once or twice a week) and sugar. I also haven''t been eating any junk food and not a lot of preprepared packaged food, hence no food additives and chemicals.

Not only have I lost about 20 lbs, but my skin is better than it has looked for years, I haven''t had to even use the cream for months. But in the last month of so, I have been eating the same way I used to (very bad I know) and guess what? My neck is starting to itch and I have a bit of a spotty rash.

I''m going back to my previous healthy eating plan and I know my skin will clear up again, I''m convinced the two are linked.

I need to get on this ball - I suspect food allergy with my middle child and myself - as well as my youngest. There are several types of tests... I''ve had a prick test but has anyone had the type where they take vials of blood and narrow down all sorts of things?

Amyethyste--that is great news. I too have bad eczema on my hands. Almost anything chronic happening on the exterior of our bodies is a symptom of something going on within so your finding makes perfect sense. For me, dairy is a big trigger, but i suspect that wheat and gluten plays a role as well.
Hope you continue to heal, i know how painful and icky-looking this condition can be!

I just read about this in the paper today. It was a doctor''s column and someone wrote in asking if it was possible that the cod liver oil that he was taking helped his eczema. The doctor replied that it is quite possible because cod liver oil is an omega 3 that would reduce inflammation.

I am sure that controlling your diet woud certainly impact your eczema. I think you are heading in the right direction in trying to control this condition. Good luck!

I think it's food allergy's too. I think you need to see a allergist that can do some tests to verify what exactly you are allergic to. It's also good to know so you can avoid eating it (if you can)! Glad to hear that your hands are clearing up as having cracks really really suck!

Some people have bad reactions with some food and some don't. My sister (same sister with bad eczema) is allergic to lobster but she eats it anyway. She knows if she eats it her face will be all red and puffy but she loves lobster too much to give it up (silly girl will accept the itchyness for yummy lobster). So she eats it in private at home and make sure she don't go out afterwards. We make fun of her how her friends haven't seen the "real" ugly side of her

I'm going to call her tonight to see if her current bf have seen her face after she eats lobster cause if he thinks she's hot with that face he's a keeper!

I second this info on DAIRY!!!

My youngest son has TERRIBLE eczema on his face as a newborn...his skin was cracked and oozing, a scary thing for a mom to see on her beautiful baby! He ALSO had asthma at 6 weeks.

Anyway, since I breastfed him, his pediatrician said he was allergic to something ''in my milk'' and I should QUIT breastfeeding...she also put him on an inhaler and steroid creams, neither helped his condition...since this was my SECOND child, I knew better than to quit breastfeeding, since it is helpful in preventing allergies. so I went on the Le Leche League allergy diet and discovered he was having the reaction as a result of DAIRY from my diet.

About 10 days after I cut out ALL dairy, his skin cleared up PERFECTLY and all signs of wheezing STOPPED. His pediatrician thought I quit breastfeeding once she saw him the next time...but I told her what I had done, cut out dairy and she totally BLEW IT OFF. So I changed doctors.

My DH also has dairy sensitivities and had since he was a child. We cut out most dairy, as a family, once we realized how sensitive we all were. And WE ALL FELT BETTER as a result.

I wonder how many kids who are treated for ASTHMA, ADHD, allergies, ear infections, etc. have undiagnosed FOOD allergies! And food allergies can NOT be detected by skin prick tests, they can only be diagnosed by ''ingestion and observation'' - you have to SEE how a food affects behavior and symptoms...something most parents don''t do...because doctors aren''t aware of the food/behavior/disease connection either.

And it IS true, you DO crave what you are allergic to. Food allergies are NOT always as easy to diagnose as a severe allergy would be, like to peanuts for example. But they are real and DO exist and are at the root of MANY illnesses.

Amethyste, I hope you continue to improve and feel better!
