I saw this headline in "The New York Times" this morning. We have had a couple of threads on bullying here in Hangout. As soon as I saw that there was an organized effort among Muslim groups to raise money quickly to help Jewish groups to repair cemeteries, I thought of the massive Jewish support at rallies against a US "Muslim ban". Kudos also to Ellen DeGeneres and J.K.Rowling for contributing to this fund, too. This fund is against hate crimes, which is the ultimate form of bullying.

"Two attacks on Jewish cemeteries in the last week have resulted in an outpouring of more than $136,000 in donations from thousands of Muslims and others, who have also pledged to financially support Jewish institutions if there are further attacks.

Jewish organizations have reported a sharp increase in harassment. The JCC Association of North America, which represents Jewish community centers, said 21 Jewish institutions, including eight day schools, had received bomb threats on Monday.

Two Muslim activists, Linda Sarsour and Tarek El-Messidi, asked Muslims to donate $20,000 in a crowdfunding effort to repair hundreds of Jewish headstones that were toppled near St. Louis last week. That goal was reached in three hours."

Thanks for posting this Deb.

We are all in this together and that is why I get distressed when others don't realize this fact. We all have to work together (instead of against each other) to make this world a better kinder place. We are all truly part of the process and part of the human race-together.
Why do we fight against each other? Why do people hate? Doesn't it feel better to be kind and generous and genuinely caring for and about each other? All rhetorical questions of course. (Just woke up a little while ago and feeling groggy so please excuse my sappy questions).

Thank you Deb. (((Hugs))).

I LOVE JK Rowling.

So...Living in STL, I have to say that I found it pretty damn awesome how quickly people assembled to help, even those who only did it as a photo op (*cough* VP and Gov WasBoughtAndPaidFor) and how quickly that specific fundraiser went well over it's goal. That was not some random thing--it takes a lot to knock over a giant monument headstone.

I would LIKE to think in any other place and any other time this would not even be a consideration and the money would pour in, but it's 2017, in Agent Orange's "america" and this city is a powder keg of racist trash. When it's for police, money rolls in. When it's for something like this, less money comes in, what money does come comes in from outsiders and those who would be called "libtards" by those with no sense. I would like to think EVERYONE would contribute, because it could have happened to any cemetery, but it didn't. It was targeted, and it was a hate crime.

I think a lot of people have got to get a clue about Muslims as a whole, about humanity as a whole, and frankly, just people who are not the average white folk in general. The fact is that unless you are a First Nations/Native American, you're an illegal immigrant and you came here without papers, stole land from the rightful owners, and just decided you're a friggin American and entitled to everything without having to earn it. To suddenly decide that no one new is allowed, unless they come "legally" and "earn it", is a bunch of horseshit and dumb****ery. You didn't, so why are the rules now different? And this ridiculousness that a refugee is a terrorist here to kill us? Give me a break. Just NO. We have more to fear from those born here, those who look just like us--the whiteskinned, self-righteous, entitled jerkwads who can't handle the idea of anyone but themselves being a "good person" wanting safe harbor and a better life. I am constantly disappointed by how much "clinging to the past" people do thinking that the "past" was this great time for everyone. No, it wasn't. It was not a great time for the majority of people. Looking backwards is not going to help us move forward.

The future is going to be wrought with poverty for a HUGE majority of people--every race and every current income level. The jobs will be slim pickings as automation will put most of us out of work. That is going to come REALLY quickly, and I don't think humanity as a whole has grasped how soon that reality really is coming. We're talking the next decade, maybe two. If that. We won't even be needed to FIX the automation. We will need a welfare state to survive. Why people don't get that is beyond me. And why people don't get that we need each other to survive is even more baffling.

I am glad to see this! Thanks Deb.

The support has been going both ways. Hours after the executive order announcing travel ban on several Muslim countries was announced, a Dallas mosque was damaged due to arson. Later the same day, a representative from a local synagogue gave one of the mosque's founders a key to the synagogue so the mosque members had a place to worship. http://www.businessinsider.com/jews-gave-muslims-keys-to-synagogue-after-town-mosque-burnt-town-2017-2

Just this week, the Jewish community donated money to help repair a local mosque that was torched. http://www.jta.org/2017/02/28/news-opinion/united-states/jews-supporting-torched-tampa-mosque-18-at-a-time

While it's too bad all of these hateful acts are occurring, it's nice to see some good come out of it.
