What do y''all think about having more than one middle name? Way too annoying for forms etc? Or would it make a kid feel unique and special? Particularly if each of the names tied the kid to something meaningful?

Thoughts?

Um. I''m going to give myself two middle names when I get hitched. And I''m kind of looking forward to it.

Annoying. I had two middle names my whole life, and 90% of the time people either thought I had 2 last names (leading to a lot of confusion when I needed to provide the "correct" name for something) or they didn't put the second middle one on anyway.

I actually dropped it when I got married because it was so annoying! (And to be fair, it was my mom's maiden name and I dropped my given surname, so I felt it was only fair if I was dropping dad's name to drop mom's too).

My personal opinion..is it''s annoying for the rest of your life when it comes to forms. It may be beautiful, but so frustrating. My only experience with anything similar is my Dad doesn''t have a middle name. So he always has to go through explaining that. And sometimes people sending us offers/letters give him my Mom''s middle name..or they give him my Mom''s maiden name..he even gets random middle names that aren''t his of course. I don''t think this would happen..but I do think they may get confused as to which is the first middle name and it''ll be trouble. But if you think the meaning is worth it and outweighs that then maybe it''s worth it.

My future BIL has 2 middle names and hates it. He is going to legally drop one.

Simple is *always* better IMHO.

Some cultures it is very common to have long significant names. Personally I like my names short and sweet. I rarely even think about my middle name and use it even less. It has just become the letter M on forms

So I guess it just depends.

I think it''s too much and could be annoying for the child.

I agree.

I think it would be special and fun. I don''t have more than one middle name, though, so I have no personal experience with it! However, my friend from high school had two middle names and always liked it.

Plus (as I''m sure you know) multiple middle names are very common in other cultures, so it''s not that big of a deal, in my opinion! (My sister in law is Swedish and I think she has at least three middle names.)

So I say go for it!

I recently learned that a colleague of mine has three middle names, and I was kind of envious. :)

But I love my middle name (Rachael), and I use it all the time. My maiden name was a bit common, as is my first name (Lori), so I always used my middle name, and I still do.

I have two. Multiple middle name are very common in Qc. It never bothered me as I never use them. I've never needed to. My two (hyphenated) last name do bother me, though. It's just my luck that I live in probably the only place in the world where you can't change your name when you get married!!

Don't like the idea, to be honest. I think it'd be more of a hassle than anything.

IMO.. just think about when the kid gets in trouble... do you wanna yelll 4-5 names at them?!?! I remember if I was in real trouble Id get the full first middle last....Or when they are at graduation or you know in kindergarten or something dont they usually always put your full name on stuff sometimes, could be kidna long maybe??? I dont remember its been a while... oh and you dont want some snarky kid going... why do you have 2 middle names, could your parents not agree on one?!?

sorry just trying to think about of the box... oh and watch for what the initials spell.. dont want anything crazy either, my BF insists on making sure there is nothing wrong with any name or initials so kids wont pick on them..lol

Thanks for the input everyone! Probably, we''ll just stick to 1 middle name, given the strong anti feelings among those of you with multiple names, but as these are the first grandkids, the family naming obligations we didn''t even know we were under seem to be piling up! Yikes!

Oh, and I use my middle name as part of name on anything official and anything I publish or write for work. I am ALWAYS known by all three names and it actually annoys me when the middle name is left off.

My dear SIL just had her first grandchild. She went on and on about all the reasons she preferred that her son and DIL not name the child what they planned to name her. After listening for about 30 minutes I finally said that while she had lots of wonderful reasons, it simply wasn''t her decision to make.

She said she had no doubt that her DIL agreed with me.

So, the kids named the new grandchild the name she didn''t want, and she is nutty crazy about that baby anyhow.

Name the baby whatever you want!
