Mugged for 90K ring, interesting reactions

In light of the poster in RT with the 120K ring budget (I also found that post to be dubious but who cares what I think), here we have a woman with a 90K ring (7.5 ct. pear btw which valuation seems low) who was mugged at a Whole Foods store parking lot. There are over 150 comments on this story, most of them focused on why anyone would have a piece of jewelry that expensive and why they would wear it out in public. Most blame the victim. Interesting.

Its fascinating how many immediately suspect insurance fraud. The woman had a broken nose & many chipped teeth ... I guess those are free to fix, huh? Rich women love broken teeth! Or maybe she just wanted an excuse for a face lift ... PEOPLE!!!

Wow. While it''s none of my business how much someone''s ring costs and people will steal just about anything these days, it can be a risky thing to wear big, expensive bling outside of really posh neighborhoods (even then...).

I hope she had insurance!

The sad part is this happened in a very nice area. It kind of makes me wonder if they knew her or had been keeping an eye on her? Unless she was waving her hand around in the light, it seems unlikely they would just glance over and decide to steal it right then... or maybe that''s just my thinking?

What I don''t understand is why people don''t have insurance? I mean, I''ve got insurance on my dinky $5k ring, I certainly would have insurance on a $90k ring. And I don''t agree with the idea of not wearing nice jewelry out and about. What''s the point in buying it if you can''t wear it?

I think for me it would be a different thought.... I wonder why folks like her don''t get a smaller ring to wear for day to day things? To me, rings of that size, value, and quality aren''t for every day wear, regardless of if it''s an engagement piece or not..... Why not have something smaller to wear to the grocery so this doesn''t happen?

I do feel bad for her...

Not surprised about the replies. There ''s a lot of envy out there--it''s human nature--and unfortunately our culture recently is into bashing the rich--or those seen as rich--there''s no more the idea that most people who have stuff have worked hard for their stuff. I can''t believe that people would be all over a 55 year old woman who was just doing her shopping and got her nose broken, her teeth smashed AND her engagement ring stolen (people''e engagement rings are sentimental to them, and some are heirlooms) but this is where we are.

Because she obviously has a different opinion about what is appropriate for daily wear than you do, and that *should* be okay.

We don''t live in bubbles. Other people will have opinions about who you are, what you wear, what you do, and how much you spend.

And criminals and would-be criminals will target you, especially if you are in the right place at the wrong time. Sometimes it will be because we are who we are, we wear what we wear, or drive what we drive. Sometimes it will be because our own behavior, whether we''re oblivious or calling attention to ourselves, makes us a favorable target.

It is what it is.

i think this is a very tricky one. In an ideal world, if you have a wonderful piece of jewellery you should be able to wear it. I guess the world just isnt that safe, and if this happened in a nice area then I dont know what the solution is... Only wear it in the home??!
