For the monogram of a married couple is there a traditional way of writing it?

For example: Husband''s name is Joe Smith, wife is Mary:
Would the monogram read: JSM or MSJ or does it matter?

Another question...Our monogram would be ABC...I don't know if I like that too much...Do you think people would notice if I switched it?
