Hi everyone,

My beautiful oriental black cat Louis has been missing for 4 days. This is very distressing for me, he is very loved and I am sick with worry about where he might be. This is totally out of character for him, he has only ever done this a couple of times before and never away longer then one day and night!


We have had him for over 9 years (since he was 3 mths old). My daughter recently got a kitten (female) and she is adorable and only 12 weeks old. Louis wasn't overly friendly towards her, hissing at her at first but then he seemed to tolerate her being around more recently. My concern is that he is a bit upset (cats being very territorial as they are) and that's way he has disappeared. We have been looking for him and asking the neighbours if they see him to let us know.

I have tried the animal shelter and they don't have him. I am just hoping he hasn't been accidentally locked in someones garage or house and they have gone away for Easter. He is not the friendliest cat to strangers and it's highly unlikely he would let anyone pick him up.


It's a horrible feeling not knowing where he is :(( Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice on what to do would be helpful, he is my baby and I feel helpless. My 18 year old son is upset too, Louis has been around half his lifetime and sleeps on his bed every night :((

Fingers crossed for you Monnyjay :? I hope Louis is just out of sorts and off on a pout...Cats are hunters so maybe he's off on a jaunt somewhere??? Even though it is out of character, hopefully he will be back soon - Can't wait till you post and tell us he's home safe and sound with a mysterious glint in his eye!!!

Sorry to hear that, MJ. My sister had a cat who escaped from her control at the vet's office, in a rural wooded area. She was gone for months, during a cold and snowy CT winter. We found her by using a service that will mail a photo of the cat on a postcard, relevant information and contact details to a certain radius surrounding the address where the pet went missing. Neighbors would call whenever she was sighted (very occasionally), and eventually, we got her. The woman who called had her photo posted on her refrigerator, and called when she just showed up in her backyard one day. Though she was quite a bit thinner than she was at the start, somehow she survived out on her own!! So, there is hope! You might google to find a similar service. I recall the one we used was out of Texas, and I believe it was just a woman working out of her home who had access to address database for mailing advertisements.

I suggest putting up neon (regular paper sized) signs in the area. No photos of the cat -- these never come out well on small paper and passers-by can't really make out what the cat looks like all that well. Just MISSING CAT in big bold letters so that cars passing by can actually see it, a phone number, basic description (like color and long or short hair), requesting that you be called even for sightings only and a little note at the bottom that all signs will be removed after cat is found.
 
Sorry to hear this Monnyjay. Have you tried asking the neighbours very nicely if they would check their garages, sheds etc while you wait? Lots of people say they will check and they mean it, but get distracted by the phone or something else.

This website http://www.squidoo.com/lost-cat is british but it does have some helpful tips and I am sure that the websites it gives you will have similar sites where you are. LV is absolutely right about the posters, it would also be worth making smaller extra copies and using them as pamphlets, go door to door as far as you think Louis is likely to roam.

Dust! Our first cat went missing in New Orleans for three weeks and we found her a block away. We didn't put flyers up anywhere but I think that's an excellent idea.
 
Monnyjay: Here's hoping your Louis is indeed in somebody's garage. That happened to my Maya (also a black cat) many years ago - she got into my next door neighbor's two-story out building and was locked in there for a day or two until I was finally able to hear her meowing during a relatively quite period, and get her out of there. Meanwhile I checked all the nearby animal shelters... and I distinctly recall thinking how hard it was to tell one black cat from another! (I hadn't had Maya that long at the time.)

Anyhow, I hope Louis shows up soon. Do post notices around the neighborhood, just in case. It's possible someone has spotted him but just didn't know what to do with that information!
 
Have you posted on CL? My friend lost her cats and someone contacted her through her CL post.

Have you checked with all your neighbors? A few years ago one of my neighbors had their cat go missing. I guess after a while she hired a psychic who pretty much described my basement to her. She also told the cat owner that her cat was being fed and had plenty of fresh water. Turns out I was actually unknowingly feeding it at the time. Thought I was feeding a neighborhood stray and that he was just really extra hungry that week. Anyway she stopped by my house and asked if I had seen her cat which I hadn't. Then she asked if she could check my basement because the psychic had described my house. Anyway she walked in my basement and walked out with her cat. I had been down there a couple times and didn't see any cat. It only came out of hiding for her. So yours could totally be in a garage or basement in the neighborhood.

Oh no!

My monster ran off couple times (slipped out when we were dealing with people at the door) but we've been lucky enough that we found him every time - we found him getting a belly rub from a neighbor and another time the Fed Ex guy helped me catch him. Even though the dog was microchipped as a puppy and his tags have our contact info on it, it bothered me so much that I asked DH if we could get a gps tracking collar.

I hope your little guy finds his way home safe and sound quickly.

I keep checking back to see if he has come home... it's horrible to be worrying about your furbabies. :(sad .. I'm so sorry.. I hope he finds he way back to you soon!!!
 
I would put up fliers. I would also grab his favorite treats and food and drive really slowly around your neighborhood calling his name (walking would be better but you said you are sick). Is he talkative? If he is and he responds you can use the food and treats to tempt him over to you.

I'm so sorry this is happening. It's excruciating when your pets might be in trouble and I know you are feeling helpless. (HUGS)
 
Sending lots of dust!! I would be devastated if one of my kitties went missing but I have heard several stories of cats getting out, often for several weeks, but then returning home. I would definitely take the advice to talk to your neighbors and put up fliers.
 
He is probably close by. If he is injured he could be hiding in a bush - shake every bush within a few blocks of your neighborhood. Also, cats like to go under buildings. See if any neighbors have recently closed up any crawl spaces or put up decks or underpinning that could trap him in there.

Your best bet is to knock on doors and ask to do a thorough visual inspection of bushes, buildings, sheds, etc.

Recently my Dad put up some lattice under some underpinning of an addition to his house. Six weeks later, hey found the sweetest cat trapped in there. He had been without food for 6 weeks (maybe bugs) but he did have access to water.

He was a neighbor's cat that had been missing. My parents felt horrible - they have 2 cats of their own. They returned him to the owner - his name is Moses. Moses keeps coming to my parents' house wanting in. They wish they had kept him and not told anyone. While I'm sure the owner loves her cat, she has yet to take him to the vet after having been trapped. I called her and told her about fatty liver disease and that he must get checked out and the prognosis could be bleak. He had dropped from 18 lbs to 9 lbs and wasn't jaundiced at all and is now eating and behaving normally. Still, no vet check and still lets him roam.

Thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts and advice. I know some many pricescopers have cats and are cat lovers hence the reason why I thought I would post.

I am sorry to say Louis has not come home as yet, it is 5 days now. I called all the Animal Hospitals, local vets and the council today - no black cats matching his description. They did say it was best to come down and have a look in person because their databases are not updated daily.

In my heart I fear the worst, but I am hanging onto the hope of him just turning up when he has had enough of roaming showing his face at the front door glass and meowing to be let in.

I will continue to search the neighbours houses (with their permission) and also check under bushes - just in case he has been injured and is hiding under something. We do have a bit of new housing developments going on locally, so there is a chance that he has wandered and been locked in somewhere. He did do that once in my neighbour's garden shed and was locked in for a day. We heard his faint meows and came to the rescue.

Unfortunately, Louis is not microchipped (only desexed) and he didn't have his id tag on, just a new collar I recently bought for him with diamentes all the way around. "Hey a cat's gotta have a bit of bling too". Louis is a very handsome cat.


So, tomorrow's another day......... let's hope I have some positive news for you all. Once again, thank's everyone :wavey:
 
Sending you good wishes - a missing pet is so upsetting. Personally checking yards is a very good idea. One of the cats we fostered and adopted to a coworker was also locked in a neighbor's shed for 3 days. She tried to hard to get out on her own that she cut her face all up and ended up with abscesses. Hopefully he's just gotten stuck somewhere and you'll suss out where. I must admit though, this is my nightmare. None of my cats are allowed outside because of this sort of situation. :blackeye: I really, really hope your fuzzball returns/is found soon.
 
Oh Monny, I'm so sorry - you must be so, so worried. Please don't lose hope. I'm sending Louis tons of Go Home dust just in case he is wandering around!!!

It sounds like he's a bit territorial, if that's the case I'm thinking he might still be near "his" house? I'd try leaving a can of something smelly out at night - even better if you warm it up a bit and make it smell more, if he's scared or hurt or sick he might be brave enough to venture out for food at night, even if he's not responding to your voice. Do keep watch though - you don't want the food attracting other critters. I read on some forum somewhere about someone putting a baby monitor outside to make sure he didn't miss him, I thought that was brilliant - maybe something to try?



One of the first things we did when we bought our house was have invisible fencing installed all the way around, four feet out. I still worry though, especially with other people... only one of ours is interested in The Outside so it's easier to keep them all in check - and of course he's the black one!
 
Try leaving an article of your clothing (unwashed) outside. Preferably an undershirt or something that smells a little bit. The idea behind it is that your cat will recognize your scent and come back. I have not does this personally, but my friend did this when her dog went missing and he came back.

Yes, this! You can even cut it up in small pieces and leave a trail.
 
Good idea about the clothing to create a trail - I don't think I ever would have thought of that!

We had a cat that would hide in the house and whenever you wanted him to appear - turn on the can opener. To him it meant dinner time, to us it meant "ah HA, there you are!" He must have been so pissed with us!!!

Monnyjay, I am keeping my fingers crossed for you. This must be so stressful for you and your family. I hope louis turns up very VERY soon. Any chance you could speak to some of the construction workers on the nearby site - maybe they may have seen him?? or have info??? Another 'out there' idea, but at this point, leave no stone unturned, as the saying goes.
