Anyone know whether these are worth the steep price? I have a dog who sheds an enormous amount and my current vacuum just isn''t cutting it. Besides, we have all wood floors and mine is an upright. Thoughts?

D- I did a lot of research and I'm getting the Eureka (sp?) Sanitaire...I think it was AGBF maybe who first suggested it on the vacuum thread...dunno...It's the red commercial model. You'll have to call them to see who carries it, I went to several stores and couldn't find it. I kind of stopped looking for about a month but really need one now and am getting one! We also have wood floors but with some area rugs. I really want it for the attachments for the couches b/c of my flying monkeys aka my three cats..

Thanks, MMM. Did you specifically decide against the Miele? If you don''t mind sharing, how much is the Eureka you''re referring to?

i own a cannister miele and i LOVE it! when i bought it we had 9 cats [unfortunately, 2005 has been hard and we now only have 7] and tile floors throughout except for the hardwood stair case. i have never regreted the purchase. however, you do not need the really upscale miele for a home with only hardwood floors. i was lucky and found a distributor that still had the Artico model. the parquet brush is great for hard floor surfaces. and i find the hepa filter does help with the dust of housecleaning.

the only downside is the cost of the bags. however, i vacuum pretty much every day and feel i get my $$$''s worth out of everything.

there are other good vacuums recommended for pet people but many of them offer features we with hard floors just don''t need. so why pay for them if we''re not going to use them?

I bought the Miele Carina about a month ago and I really like it. It''s great on bare floors or low carpets (I have some berber). It''s not really made for deep carpets because it doesn''t have the beater bar, that thing that spins on the bottom. Which I like because it always seemed like some string or something got stuck on my old upright and I had to untwirl it all the time. (I hope that makes sense). The motor comes with a 7 year warranty (I think, don''t quote me on that) and you can get optional hepa filters although the filter it comes with is really good I think. Plus it''s small and moves around easily. Plus it''s really quiet. If you have a lot of bare floors I''d recommend this vacuum. Hope that was helpful. It cost $350.

Thanks, guys. That is really helpful. I guess I have to do more research because there are so many different models and I know they go as high as $1,200 (not that I would ever spend that much on a vacuum), but I guess I''m just wondering whether it''s worth it to spend a little more to get the more expensive model??

I don''t know about mieles but with hairy chow chows and cats this works great! I also love the wet/dry factor and that I can "mop" floors with it too and squeegee them dry with it. It''s great for all floors too. I just rinse out the can and you can actually reuse the "fliter" a couple of times as well. I wasn''t pleased about the cost initially but it''s been amazing to use.

<------excellent vacuums but not cheap.

One of our houses has a central or "built in", don''t remember the brand but it''s also excellent with animals and hardwood floors, if you can do that I''d recommend that also.

My inlaws (sis, & mil) have the "animal" dyson and both love it, they have hardwood and dogs also.

Friends of mine still love their "Rainbow" too. Also pet owners.

I have no idea if any of this helps you but it gives you wider choice to look at also.

Everyone who has the dyson animal sings it''s praises consistently. My friend has a miele. It''s a good vaccum but very hard to push on carpet.

Dem,

can you go to a vacuum shop where they will let you try out higher end models?

this is what I did- at the time I was driving a mini van and told the guy I wanted to test the cannister on the passenger side of my van to see if it would get the hair out quickly and he was more than happy to do that and it worked perfectly! folks with pets know how hard it is to get the hair out of the car.

I have several vacuums for different things but would love to do the Beam central vac.

Dem,
I had the same problem with my Hoover not being able to pick up animal fur. This was especially a problem with the cats since their fur is so fine. I recently bought a top of the line Dyson and it is absolutely amazing!! It picks up EVERYTHING, and I actually don''t mind vacuuming any more because I can now see a difference.

Yikes! For $350, I''d just get a Dyson. The only difference btw them all are the attachments. I''d recommend the DC14 series rather than the DC07 b/c it''s basically the 2nd gen models with small, but very good improvements.

You don''t necessarily need the Animal if you have pets. Costco has a Full Kit (or something like that) model that will work just as well. Just see what attachment the Animal comes with and compare it to the other models.

Advantages (for that large price of course) of a Dyson include:
No bags
Easy to dump canister (can stick it in the trashcan so the flying dust doesn''t come out as far)
Brush area guard comes off so easy to remove hair that gets rolled up
Not that heavy
Handle is placed perfectly so vacuum (when picking it up) is nicely balanced
Washable filter
Really doesn''t lose suction, even when all full

Disadvantages:
Cost
Might be too much suction
