Anyone had an experience with Microdermabrasion? At home? Spa? Let me know as I am curious to give it a whirl!

I''m interested in this, as well.

I''ve done it with a licensed aethetician and it hurt a bit but my face is quite sensitive. She wont do it on me anymore since my skin gets too red. I have also used Dr. Brandt''s microdermabrasion cream at home and it''s pretty good but makes your skin red for a bit. Overall, I think that fruit acid-based exfoliation is better for your skin in the long run. Anything with Papaya or Pineapple extracts works.

I have gotten it done lots of times my skin is so soft & smooth afterwards. I try to go once a month for maintenance to lighten the redness I get from attacking my breakouts. It seems like my AHA works better after the micro. Kind of feels rough the first treatment, not painful but like someone is lightly rubbing sandpaper on your face or a cats tongue. It''s best to get it done at a dermatologists office if they offer it. If I cant get in there I go to a place called the Skin Institute. What I usually do is buy a package of 6 to get a little better price because the treatments are pricey for a procedure that needs to be repeated regularly to maintain results. In the past I have gotten light chemical peels-I hated it. My skin was really irritated, peeled enough that I needed to miss a day or two of work & didnt see that much of a difference. I like that with the micro there is no down time & I can feel/see a difference right after.

I do it at a spa. I really like it. My face was really red the first time and then was okay after that. It tickles!

Amanda,
Which spa do you go to?

Amanda,
Which spa do you go to?
I go to Bliss 57 and get the Crystal Clearing with Margarita. I always laugh out loud when she does my neck...

I don''t know what result you hope to accomplish...but for me my Medical Aesthetican recommended going with peels instead. It may have something to do with my age. But I will tell you she is no fan of the abrasion method.

I get peels that alternate from Sal acid to Glycolic acid. The end result I receive is smoother, tighter skin with smaller pores, and my wrinkles disappear...the large laugh lines as well as the teeny little lines...and the spots from years of sun damage and the other "things" that stay red...alll diminish and disappear. Smooth soft radiant skin appears. Of course, I am not knocking anyone who has success with the pro version of brasion. And....I also use the home strength dermabrasion things. She reminds me that the home versions are not anywhere close to the intensity of the spa or derm office ones. My home version is a sponge or brush on the end of a buffer. It swirls round and round and some argue that that is not the exact motion that one would normally choose to counter wrinkles. But at home, that is all you have to use as you don''t have a high powered blower shooting tiny crystals at your skin.

The best tip I can give you is... first is go to a Medical trained office...not cosmetic one. And secondly, you should be really careful starting ANY serious facial regime now. The sun can damage you more severely after any procedure you choose. So you need to make a commitment to faithfully use an intense broadband screen EVERYTIME you go OUTSIDE. Big Floppy hats too! In you car to work for example, you can get more damage than an hour by the pool. SO...be prepared to protect yourself more than you ever have-following what ever you choose to do. You will be revealing delicate virgin skin...your diligence is a must. It is alot to do during the outside activity days of summer.

I have noticed by your avatar, we are very similar in coloring. We could be twinkies!

What''s Bliss 57 like? I just go to the spa at my gym.

It''s not painfully hip?

It''s not painfully hip?
They''re opening up in a new location so I''m not sure how that will be... but I''m far from hip and I feel totally comfortable there. I really like the woman I go to -- Margarita. I''ve been going to her for waxes for years and when I decided to go for a facial she helped me out too.

There are always places that are less expensive for the same thing, but I feel very comfortable there so I don''t mind paying the money.

Good to know. I''ve been staying away because I thought Bliss was painfully hip, like 5F at Bergdorf.

I''ve used the Neutrogena Advanced Solutions At Home MicroDermabrasion System and really liked it. I have sensitive skin but this was very gentle and didn''t irritate my skin. I bought it to use before my wedding. After my wedding, I got lazy and stopped using it so I can''t really remember if the results were great. I should really start using it again!

Oink, oink. Guinea pig reporting for duty. I too purchased the Neutrogena microdermabrasion kit. Been using it 2x a week for 3 years. Naturally, it''s not the calibre of professional treatments but my skin is soft, pores and fine lines are less noticeable, blemishes are nonexistent and best of all, I keep getting compliments on the condition of my skin.

Wow, thanks to all. I think I will skip the spa and try the neutrogena! I love this forum, so many lovely helpful people.

i have had regular microderm (at a clinical spa) for the past 5 years.
i had bad zits (not "acne" per se but cystic zits, and general clogged pores, pimples constantly/oily skin/large pores and finally had had enough (i''m 39 now, so mid 30''s when i started)

in conjunction with vitamin A peels and regular facials, and good at-home products i can honestly say that microderm has changed my life.

when i first started, i went every 2 weeks, at $100 a pop but now I go every 6 weeks or so, but may start going every 3 up until my wedding.

i get microdermabrasion with a Vitamin A peel "chaser", for $100. The Vitamin A peel is very mild, and is supposed to accentuate the microderm''s impact. the only down side is that you look a bit yellow/shiny the day of, but you can plan around that.

i haven''t worn foundation in over 2 years, and i get complements on my skin a lot (for someone with breakouts my whole life, this says a lot!)

oh- and a plus is the anti-aging effects, but i can''t notice anything dramatic in that department, but i''m not looking yet!

I've had a couple at the local Plastic Surgeon's place (no, there was no scalpel involved, he he). You might have heard abt him, if you're reading this, Harriet, his name begins with a "H". The result was really amazing, but gave up because of the exorbitant prices! I'd do it again though and might do one just before we go on our holiday this yr.
