Recently I''ve become interested in getting a metal detector to see what I can find.

I know it''s kind of an old man hobby, but I was wondering if any one had one or could recommend a good brand or model?

I''m also curious if does metal detection as a hobby, and if so, is it fun? boring?

Thanks!

Was into it for a while with a basic detector I made myself.
Found a lot of bottle caps and coins a few cheap rings but nothing too interesting.
A modern detector is way kewl.

Just be careful where you search, searching in a public park or historical site can get your gear and your car that you drove there taken from you and get you arrested in many states.
Trespassing can get you arrested or shot so get permission before going on private property.
Most private beaches have also banned them.
It is a lot less fun that it used to be because of some idiots ruining it for everyone.
Remember anything of value you find must be turned over to the police them its yours if no one claims it. (you also have to pay income tax on it)
Some states are really cracking down on this.

Thanks Stmrdr!

I will ask the folks over there, and definately check into treasure hunitng legislation and regulation

What type of detecting are you interested in?

Yes - you need to check local laws but it is perfectly legal in many areas.

I have done some detecting on FL beaches. I haven''t checked the site in ages but some people post reports and good finds here:

This place has pretty decent prices and you can search for detectors by category:

And these forums will keep you busy for a while:

It''s good exercise. Can be boring but can be fun too. I''ll hunt FL beaches after a hurricane looking for treasure from a fleet of Spanish galleons. Have found little due to beach renourishment projects but good stuff is found. Related articles:
