Friday evening I was out and had a few beers. Maybe more than typically, but not an outrageous amount. For context sake, let''s say I had somewhere in the range of 6-8 beers (all light too!) While I am not a heavy drinker and usually have a glass of wine or two, I was up for some dancing and partying, to say the least!

Well, it did not fare well for me the following morning. (Shame on me! FI was not happy...) But anyway, I was telling my BFF about my incredibly horrible hangover and she says, "Well, do you have your period?" Of course I did. "Well, duh," she says, "everyone knows you can''t drink as much as you usually can when you have your period." And I''m thinking, "duh?! I didn''t know this!!!"

I have never heard this before!!! So I guess I''m wondering 1. did you know this? and 2. why does this happen?

I''ve never heard of this! My guess is that while your body might handle things a little different while on your period, it isn''t significant enough to cause a drastic change in the way you feel. If im not mistaken, hangovers are caused by dehydration and would have nothing to do with your reproductive system, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, hangovers are due to dehydration (as far as I know too), not your reproductive cycle. lol

Ok I had to google this because I've never heard that before. But according to www.alcoholalert.com it states under tolerance facts that "Women are also more affected by alcohol during menstruation"

I did also find on another website that because alcohol thins your blood, it also will increase your flow. So i'd avoid it just for the "mess" lol

I think it has something to do with how you retain water during your period? I know I''ve heard this somewhere, but I don''t remember why it''s true.

For me, it''s all related to how often I pee while drinking. If I''m peeing every 45 minutes, I know I''ll be hungover the next day because it gets me very dehydrated. If I only pee once or twice all night, I know I''ll be fine. The first time I told DH this he thought I was crazy, but then he saw it was true. Lol. I do find that I pee more often while on my period, so I do get more dehydrated and thus more hungover.

I have never, ever heard this! Ever. I am curious now. Hmmmmm.....

This would make perfect sense! I''m going to do some research and report back...it would be good to know for certain for future reference!

Okay, here''s what I''ve found from a variety of sites:

Fluctuations in gonadal hormone levels during the menstrual cycle may affect the rate of alcohol metabolism, making a woman more susceptible to elevated blood alcohol concentrations at different points in the cycle. Research findings to date, however, have been inconsistent.

Fluctuations in hormonal balance during menstruation further affect the metabolisation of alcohol.

Women absorb more alcohol during menstruation and ovulation, and should therefore avoid drinking during their monthly periods.

Verrrryyyyy interesting. Can someone with a medical background provide insight?

it is just like after you donate blood - you get drunk faster... same theory is in practice for anyone that may have a "heavy flow".

The only thing that confuses me about this is that when you menstruate, that "blood" has been built up over a four-week period and your body can''t use it any longer. It''s not like you''re technically "bleeding" and losing blood you could otherwise use, it''s just excess. So I''m not sure this is related to bleeding...but I may very well be wrong.

I agree - I wouldn''t think the blood being lost is coming directly out of the veins or anything. Plus, you seem to lose a bit here and there over a few days - not a pint all at once like with donation.

Yes I and my BFF have definitely noticed this to be true.
