I just got back from my honeymoon in Europe. Before I left my my Psychiatrist gave me a bottle of 10mg Melatonin pills. He advised that both my DH and I take this everyday in Europe and a week when we got back. I mention this today to my stepmom and she said Oh let me forward you can article that says Melatonin can prevent ovulation. EEK! We didn''t get pregnant on the honeymoon but we did try! I had no idea! My Dr. knew we were interested in getting pregnant too!

Has anyone heard about this? I found a few sites online that mentioned it as well. And how long before melatonin gets out of your system?!

Where is the article from? There are a TON of unreliable "health" reports out there...

I took melatonin for years and got pregnant easily. I stopped once I found out I was preggers (out of caution really). I wouldn''t worry. Granted I took a lower dose (1-3mg), but didn''t def didn''t interfere with ovulation in my case at least.

Interesting. Never heard of a relationship btw melatonin and ovulation. I often take Melatonin to help me sleep, but my Dr. recommended 4 mg max was a safe amount - 10 mg seems like much more!

Can a medical professional chime in with some input here??

I asked dh (a doctor) and he said he''d never heard of melatonin affecting ovulation. He said it might be possible, but it''s not something he''s aware of.

never heard of that

maybe a correlation....

makes you sleep more so you have less sex

Ah actually, I just heard on a medical podcast (actually it was pediatric) by I doctor that I tend to respect (because he is very careful about looking into the quality of studies he reports) that there is a link to melatonin and an increase in sex hormones (causing some side effects in children like pubic hair or budding of breasts). It was really interesting because it has something to do with the reason why sex typically occurs at night. I honestly can''t remember the details but I''ll try and look it up right now......

He didn''t say anything about ovulation though, but again it was about children.

Hmmmm..... I checked back at the podcast I mentioned's show notes and he didn't have any links to what he was talking about with melatonin.

I did find this article which is interesting:
http://www.acsh.org/healthissues/newsID.747/healthissue_detail.asp

ETA- Ah..... Did a little research on this website and it seems it might be a controversial organization:

Quoting from wiki- "To its credit, [ACSH] has taken a strong public position against the dangers of tobacco, one of the leading preventable causes of death in today's society. However, it takes a generally apologetic stance regarding virtually every other health and environmental hazard produced by modern industry, accepting corporate funding from Coca-Cola, Kellogg, General Mills, Pepsico, and the American Beverage Association, among others. "

Oh well, internet research isn't always the best way to find info (go figure!

Melatonin is a hormone. My previous doctor said that she recommended against ever taking it because long term effects had not been studied.

eekks, i better not take it any longer. I take it once in a while and i am still BF.
I was told it was okay since such a tiny amount actually enters milk and it has a short half-life
but still....
