I think its a new trend right now in Hollywood to *not* wear an engagement or wedding ring. I''ve noticed a lot of married female celebs going ringless at public events and I''m curious if you think this will trickle down to the masses.

Some folks I''ve noticed going w/o their rings:

* Christina Aguilera
* Beyonce
* Kara DiGuordi
* Jennifer Lopez

And I *know* there are others, those are all in the past WEEK. Keep your eyes out, Celeb Watchers. I bet you''ll notice it too!

Anyone else noticed this? Do you think it *is* a trend & will spread? Or just a coincidence?

I wondered if it was an anticipatory move done by ladies who found fame before their marriage - just in case.

Similarly some celebs choose not to wear their rings during promotional shoots perhaps when the pictures would last longer than the relationship?

Maybe their arms are just tired from wearing so much bling that they need to take breaks.

This makes sense to me. I was just looking through a magazine, I think it was Entertainment Weekly, that did a retrospective of photos they had taken of Oscar winners the day after winning. One of the pictures was of Hilary Swank drinking coffee in bed with Chad Lowe, and I wondered, I wonder what they think about seeing this picture in a magazine now? It would really bother me.

It feels rebellious to me. Maybe in a good way? Two of the above are rumored to have marriage problems -- and one is kinda *secretly* married but the other is a newlywed! I could swear she *had* a ring at first but now doesn't wear it. I wonder ....

ETA: I also noticed that Avril Lavigne still wears her wedding set, but on the opposite hand - since she's been separated/maybe now divorced.

Could it be a way of keeping the paparazzi out of the personal lives in some way? I''m not sure about the other celebs listed above, but there have been rumors for months that Derek Jeter (NY Yankee) and Minka Kelly (actress from Friday Night Lights) are engaged and planning to get married next year - but she doesn''t wear a ring. Derek Jeter is *fiercely* private about his personal life and never discusses it with anyone, and it wouldn''t surprise me if he and his fiancee decided against rings because they don''t want anyone asking them questions about their relationship/engagement/marriage.

I could understand some celebrities deciding against wearing rings because they want to keep their personal lives as private as possible.

As a PS''er I think this is terribly sad. If you *wanted* to wear a wedding ring or set and felt you could not without forsaking aspects of your privacy.

I could see this, but for people who have publicly acknowledged their marriage, and who have been seen in public WITH their ring multiple times, it seems like it would accomplish the exact opposite of what they might be hoping.

I have always seen celebrity engagement/wedding rings as a symbol of status rather than a symbol of commitment. They probably don''t wear it because it throws the outfit off. I would imagine that some stylists also dictate what kind of accessories they want to be seen with their outfits.

Maybe its the opposite of wanting to be private -- maybe they want to encourage speculation (at least in the cases of the ring, then no ring couples -- not sure about Minka & Jeter). Or maybe its a rich defiant lady thing -- like, "I''m nobody''s *****!" Not that *I* think wearing a band makes anybody anybody''s *****.

And its not just about the BAH-LING. Even a simple band. Nada. Nothing. Zippo. And no "ring finger tattoo" either (heavens no).

Yes, I have to agree that it''s sad that some people feel they can''t wear rings just to maintain a sense of privacy.

Unfortunately, I can kind of understand where they are coming from based on how the paparazzi really won''t leave some people alone.

I agree it''s strange that some people don''t wear rings when they have publicly acknowledged their engagement/marriage. (When I mentioned the privacy issue, I was talking about the specific example of Jeter and Minka Kelly and why I would assume she might not wear a ring.) For someone like Kara DioGuardi I found it really weird last week on American Idol that her husband was SITTING in the audience and she was talking to him and referring to him, but yet she wasn''t wearing a wedding ring. I agree it seems very strange in a situation like that.

They hang out on that website www.Pricenope.com

Could be this for the ring then no ring. Encouraging speculation. Any publicity is good publicity?

Also keep in mind that some of those mentioned have major projects coming out:

Jennifer Lopez has a movie that will be releasing soon (Back Up Plan, I think this month)
Christina Aguilera has an album said to drop in April
Beyonce is rumored to have a new album also releasing this year

As a woman who goes ringless about 95% of the time, I'm going to say that they're going ringless because it's about 10x more comfortable than wearing one (upwards of 50x more comfortable in Beyonce's case)!

LOL! I hear that!

I was also wondering if its maybe a case of "Grass Is Greener Syndrome" -- the *married* ladies leaving off their rings to be fancy free & comfie & youthful looking ... the SINGLE ladies wearing their giant "promise" rings or "purity" rings or fashion rings-on-the-wrong-finger type thing.

Those teenyboppers can't WAIT to glam up that digit -- and those who've been blinging it up awhile are like, lets take a breather. Let this finger air out a bit. LOL!

ETA: I did like Sandra Bullock's whisper thin pave band she wore at the Oscars. Just enough to say "I'm married" but so, so subtle it almost wasn't even there.

My guess is it''s either a comfort or a security thing. I wouldn''t feel comfortable or safe in a crowd wearing even a 2ct. ring so I can see that being an issue with the boulders the celebs wear.

HI:

Odd considering Beyonce sang that "ring on finger" song....

Maybe the lack of jewellery when doing talk shows, award ceremonies makes then look humble...

I saw Keidi Klum n Leno not long ago, and she was in full regalia (gorgeous rings and girl) and told Leno she liked "big" diamonds. Good on her!

cheers--Sharon

I''m talking about the *wedding bands* though. Not their e-rings. I guess some eternity rings are serious carat weight but many of these ladies own those tiny pave bands - or several stackable bands (like Jen Garner). To not wear ANY band seems like a statement.

You''re right...that is really strange.

It seems like they have to be doing it on purpose then. I mean they hire whole teams of stylists and publicists. Don''t think it would be an oversight...

I loved her thin eternity band, too! I have developed a severe crush on very simple rings.

I had the same thought about the Grass is Greener Syndrome. Women can''t wait for a man to put a ring on it. Then you wear that thing for awhile and start thinking "I know I''m married. My husband knows I''m married. Can the finger just take a break for a bit?"

Gosh, do ya think maybe it''s a way to get noticed - - again - - just like they did when they first flaunted The Rocks?

Every tweet, every photo, every gossipy buzz makes them ''relevant'' again, doesn''t it?

Yeah, I''m cynical. ''Cause nobody in that list would do anything without cooly calculating the outcome. Casual, they ain''t.

I don''t always wear my wedding ring, neither does my husband. My mother keeps hers on her keychain (so does my dad).

My grandmother very seldom wore hers, my grandfather didn''t wear one period. *shrugs*

you may be cynical HollyS but you have my company - I suspect this is often the reason

Huh, interesting!

I do know Beyonce and Jay-Z have finger tattoos and are secret squirrels about the whole thing. (Interesting sidebar-they both recently hyphenated their names. Have a bigger crush on Jay-Z now.)

Oh and isn't Jennifer Lopez supposedly having marital issues? Maybe that has something to do with it?

I don't know enough celeb gossip about the other two to speculate. If I were a celeb I would probably always wear my ring to avoid speculation. But then again I could never be a celeb because I wouldn't be able to deal with people up in my bidness. Catch 22-I'll never be rich *and* famous!

Maybe they are just ditzy like me... I take mine off in the morning when I do my hair, or in the shower, and when I am washing dishes, when FI and I are snuggling (it''s pointy and it stabs him!) and sometimes for no reason at all. So naturally I leave the house without it at least 25% of the time... I mean, it''s my ring, and I love it, and it is important and treasured by me, but defines absolutely nothing about my relationship with FI (I''m marrying him, not a ring), so if I have it, I have it, and if I don''t I don''t. I''m still engaged, regardless.

I imagine the celebs feel the same way. Also, their rings are pretty large, so I''m sure many people find them impractical and cumbersome!

I don''t get this. Why buy the dang thing if you aren''t going to wear it? What''s the point?
