I went in for my make up trials today at Dillard''s Estee Lauder counter and it went horrible

I told the lady I wanted to look very natural since I don''t wear make up on a regular basis. I looked like a clown when I left! The foundation didn''t even match my skin. I am not the type of person to tell someone I don''t like something when it comes to services I just leave and don''t come back to them again. So this place will NOT be doing my make up. I am so confused should I even wear make up that day? Or should I just buy some powder, blush and lipstick and do it myself. Please help me decide I really want to look as natural as possible. Attached is a pic of what I look like with and without makeup. What do ya''ll recommend I do on the wedding day please be honest.

Maybe keep trying various places until you find someone you click with?

Honestly, I have a hard time telling someone that I don''t like their work, but sometimes I just suck it up and tell them. If it is a service I am paying for I want to get as much out of it as possible. Most people don''t take it personally at all. My sister is a makeup artist and doesn''t understand "natural." Her personal style is much more clown than human, and she knows that. If she makes someone up and they don''t like she she just thinks they are nuts and has someone else come over to help (she works in a Mac store, so always lots of people around).

Look, you are a beautiful lady. BUT, make up for your wedding day, even minimally done, is important in my view. You want to look your most polished and in photos having some makeup on looks nice. Try someone else, experiment with some at home, but do not go totally bare faced.

I definitely think you should wear make-up. Like DF said you are beautiful, but you''re going to be having photos taken and people hugging you and all of this stuff. You want your make-up to be natural, but long-lasting. Is there a different mall or different store you could go to to try someone else? I also think that would be a good idea.

Thanks for your advice guys. Were I live there is barely anything and of course only one mall. For graduation I did my make up at Mac and I liked it because it looked very natural. I want to go there, but they have a 50$ minimum purchase and I would hate to purchase all that make up that most likely I will never wear again, but I will stop by there on Wednesday when I am getting my hair trials done and give them a try. I just feel so stressed and wish I would have done these trials long ago not 2 weeks before the wedding. Hopefully when I go to Mac I will have a better experience.

Definitely try MAC, I was afraid you were going to say there weren't a lot of options. Okay, so this is what I advise. Maybe try MAC and if you don't like what they do, you will at least have the products and can do the make-up yourself. Also, do you have any good friends or family that could help?

ETA: One last thing, if you want to do make-up and then take pics and ask our opinions of different options then we are totally here to help!

Yeah I think I am going to give Mac a try buy some nice colors and if worse comes to worse to it myself. My family doesn''t live here my mom is coming to the wedding, but she has never worn make up so I''m sure she would have no clue what to do. Definately I will take pics when I go to Mac and post for opinions...Thanks

Sounds good! I can''t wait to see the photos!

Bring in the picture from graduation.

Do you have a Laura Mercier or Bobbi Brown?

Another vote for Mac. The fifty dollars isn''t wasted at least, worst thing... you buy the make up and do it yourself. I think you are going to be happy with Mac though.

I agree, definitely give MAC a try. And, off topic, but did you graduate from UF? I have some honor cords like yours in a closet somewhere, and your location looks awfully familiar.

Yup I sure did graduate from UF. Thanks everyone I am definately going to give MAC a try

If you must buy stuff, get some basics. Their lip balm (not in the pot but it looks like a chubby lipstick) is a great non make up item. Their make up remover wipes are nice too. You could get a couple of very basic natural items that I could almost promise you, even though you are not a big make up wearer, you would use them.

A great brown/black mascara and an eyebrow pencil.

A colored lip balm (they have stick and pot ones that are nice), if you want to forgo lipstick...also great for summer when lipstick can be heavy.

A neutral blush or bronzer.

A lip pencil/lipstick/gloss that are your go to colors for most occasions.

A cover up or powder if need be.

An eyeliner, again one that is most user friendly.

To me, that is a basic, minimal and polished start, a make up wardrobe you can take anywhere, easy, 5 minutes and you look polished and great. I think literally wearing NO makeup at all is not as professional, and if you can LOOK like you are just wearing a touch, it looks pulled together.

But I am a total make up junkie and could spend $500.00 in Sephora without blinking, all stuff I do not need but just get attracted to.

Just wondering, do you mean this in general or just in reference to the wedding?

As another person who basically NEVER wears makeup I find this kind of odd. Do you feel that men MUST wear make up or not be "professional" either?

Really, before I scrolled down and read that the graduation pic was the one without makeup, I couldn''t tell if you were wearing makeup or not in the first pic. I probably would wear makeup for your wedding day, just because you are getting a million pics taken and the flash can make you look washed out. But really, in real life, if you don''t think I''m attractive without make up, then guess you are never going to think I am. I''m not about to "pretend" to look a certain way in order to fake someone out. I think plenty of men who don''t wear make up are attractive, so why can''t they find me attractive/professional without make up?

Sorry if this was off-topic, just kind of hit a nerve...

She is a pretty woman and I think that going without make up sometimes is fine and healthy for the skin. But for a wedding, especially with professional photos, totally bare faced might not look great in the photos and I am sure she wants to look at the photos and feel wonderful. I personally look okay in real daily life without much on at all and even go without if I am going to the gym or pool, but I tend to look washed out in photos and always think, ahh, should have had a touch of make up on. Enhancing oneself is not about "faking". Should I guess you do not get manicures or color your hair or take care of yourself so that you are presenting your best self? Even if that means bare minimum to you, I would guess you do something to your appearance.

However, in most professional environments, having a BIT of make up on is polished. I know many headhunters and executive recruiters, my husband firm employs a couple as well, and trust me first impressions matter. Coming in and looking pulled together shows you care about your appearance. I am NOT saying a face full of make up, but merely a touch of basic things. It goes to your overall appearance. And why on earth would you think I think men should wear it? Is that typical in most professional settings for a man to wear make up? Do men generally wear the types of stuff women would on their face? No. But if a guy wants to, go ahead, though there are certain conservative fields where I would think it is not going to fly. I cannot imagine a banker wearing eyeliner or lipgloss but whatever. I do know men who take care of their skin, no foundation or true make up, but they try to groom themselves and do use lines of skincare designed for male skin.

No offense, I do not know why you had to take this personally. I have responded in this thread multiple times and this is not directed at anyone but the OP. If you are a guy and you want to put on make up go ahead, if you are a woman and do not like to wear it, don't. I was merely responding to her post about how to find a compromise in getting her make up done and keeping it looking natural so she is comfortable.

I didn't mean to offend (if I did). I was just suggesting that if men can look attractive without makeuip, why can't women?

I don't have anything against wearing makeup, but I felt that the word professional seemed to imply that one can't be sucessful at a job without makeup. I personally feel that I work and produce the same results as someone else who does or doesn't wear makeup. And I feel that I can look pulled together wthout makeup.

If someone wants to wear makeup, that's fine, but I don't think it is a MUST to look professional.

And I do agree that when taking photos or being in a play or somewhere that there may be very harsh lighting, makeup can help someone look less washed out. I didn't mean to attack, I just felt that in one's daily life, makeup isn't a necessity.

ETA: No, I don't get manicures and I don't color my hair. I am a very low maintence/natural person and feel that I look just fine this way. Yes, I probably will get my makeup done for my wedding, because as we both mentioned, photos can wash people out.

I''m not big on make up myself. I''ll wear mineral power/foundation, bronzer, mascara, and the occasional eye shadow, but not much of any of it. But, I did wear more than that for my wedding. I had a GREAT make up artist to do it. It felt natural and photographed nicely, so I was happy. I bet you''ll find someone who will do just what you want if you keep looking. If you do go the Mac route, you could always just buy some moisturizer or something for the $50 min.

Well, I tend to disagree a bit. Of course people can look very attractive without make up. I do think depending on your career or field, right or wrong, the impressions made can be hampered if you do not look as if you are trying to create a certain sense about you. This is NOT about job performance, but trust me, if a recruiter or personnel director does not get a good impression from you, you might not get the chance to show your work abilities. Again, this is not about what I personally think is right or wrong, but I know if two equally qualified people come in to interview and one presents as a bit more polished and professional, it makes a difference. Once someone gets hired, they have to perform, and make up or no make up that cannot be disguised. I guess it is just part of a total package that helps someone make a first impression, make a decision about hiring you. It is sociologically proven. Not all fields are the same, but in certain professional settings there is an accepted sort of package for the person coming in. And I know when I was interviewing for jobs years ago (high school and college) I always gave thought to my overall appearance, made sure my top was not low cut, my heels were not too high, my jewelry was simple and not attention grabbing, my hair was clean and simply styled, etc. I would not want to look like I spend TOO much time on my appearance, but not that I spent very little either.

I would definitely go with mac. I have tried everything, and when I men EVERYTHING..all store brands when i was younger and turned out to be allergic to them, and then my mom got me clinique..and then when I started modeling someone used Mac and i LOVED it...Im not sure where u are located...BUT i go to the Mac in the Millenia Mall in Orlando, and I had this lady do my makeup...a VERY natural look...bcuz i dont like to look overdone all the time..But you can go and ask for tips and what not, and honestly I sometimes purchase there eyeshawdows..but rarely...I just purchase there Foundation...which I love mine, it doesnt look caeky, just very pretty..and I use a translucent powder to avoid the over color...and THEN what u can do it have them do ur eyes...and then go to Ulta and purchase some eyeshawdow there that is almost identical... and usually u can use a coupon or something...Ill try to dig up the ladies card from Mac if u wanted to have her try it for you. But definitely go to Mac and then if u have Ulta u can try to find the same eyeshawdows :-) Goodluck!

Fancy, I am sure you look great. That is often all that is needed. I remember my mom saying, 5 minutes, that is all, you look nice and feel good too. When my skin is good, a touch of powder, a bit of blush or bronzer, a bit of mascara and some gloss do it for me. And I really feel better too, silly as it is.

Pichuchy,
I agree with everyone else, you should wear just a bit of makeup, for the pictures at least. The Mac store is a good shot. I like Benefit make up (sold @ Sephora & some department stores). I'd suggest that too.

But if the make up counters don't work out, do you have any girlfriends or sisters that can help you the day of? If you don't wear make up, I think you'd feel uncomfortable doing your own make up day of, so if you don't have anyone else you can rely on, keep practicing putting on stuff like eye-liner, mascara, etc at home so you're comfortable doing it on your wedding day.

Oh, and to add, you've got a really nice natural lip color, I think you should go more towards the berry shade for lipstick than a brown. The grad photo you lost a lot of that pretty pink-y color with the brown lipstick. Either that or just stick to lip gloss.

I spoke with the MAC counter here and they mentioned that during the week (Mon-Thurs, I think) that there is no minimum purchase required. Only on the weekends is the fifty dollars purchase required. You may want to call and check.

Hi there,

I agree with what some of the others said: Dont go bare-faced, as I also think you need some makeup on on your wedding day, especially b/c you are being photographed professionally.

However, I am going to go out on a limb here and pretty much go against what alot of the previous posters recommended: I WOULD NOT go to MAC. I think they make nice products, but IMO, their makeup artists are trained to apply makeup pretty heavily (at least in my experience). Most MAC artists do not go for the "natural look", if you know what I mean. I am also someone who does not wear any makeup on a daily basis- I only wear it when I go out on weekends....When I was selecting a makeup person for my wedding day, I had several trials with different people until I found someone I was comfortable with...She made me look like myself, just a little more made up. She emphasized my features without making me look like a totally different person.

If you are going to try artists at cosmetic counters, I would definitely try someone at companies like Bobbi Brown, Chanel, Laura Mercier, Trish McEvoy...all companies that try to emphasize the more natural look, instead of MAC, which to me, projects more of a funky/hip/young-ish image which I am sure is not what you are looking for, especially for your wedding day.

Good luck!!!

Laura Mercier is wonderful!

i had a really bad experience with MAC, too, but i don''t think it has anything to do with which makeup counter you go to, but rather who the individual wielding the mascara wand is. you definitely need to wear makeup if you''re having professional pictures taken, but you also need to be aware that what PHOTOGRAPHS as a nice, natural face will look a bit more "done" in person. it takes some getting used to! i naturally have very clear skin, so for me, a full on evening out makeup job involves eyeliner and that''s about it, but any professional pix i''ve had taken made me look washed out and dead, so i have to put something on to even me out for my wedding, even though i normally don''t need it.

in addition to trying MAC, my recommendations would be:

take a picture of makeup you like; whether it''s a pic of you or from a magazine or whatever, it gives them a sample to follow.

call a few salons, too. my hairstylist is also a certified makeup artist and has a much lighter hand than the mall folks (the mall has fluorescent lighting--maybe that plays into it?)

lastly, see the finished result in a photo, too, before dismissing it. if it still looks like too much to you, you know specifically what you want to be toned down.

Ladies-wanted to thank you all for your opinions. Also want to clarify that I have nothing against wearing make up. I am just too LAZY to ever put any on. Plus I tend to sweat very easily and it makes my face feel dirty when I do wear any. That''s just me. I spend my energy doing my hair...takes forever I have natural curly hair.

I went to MAC today and loved it. You can see pics on my other post. The lady kept it very simple like I asked and when I took pics when I got home it still looked great.

The MAC here requires a 50$ min. purchase all the time...sucks, but whatever no biggie. Today I purchased the foundation and a brush, but I think I might exchange the foundation for a pressed powder that might be something I will use more often.

Everyone was right going completely naked face that day was not going to be good so I am happy that I decided to atleast wear some make up.

I think that while I agree that MAC is more about trends and color, they do have some lovely staple basic neutrals. Spice lipliner revolutionized make up at one time. Twig is a gorgeous lipstick. They have some great stuff. I always go to someone whose look I like, though that is not always a true indicator. But if you are explicit, have photos, and really emphasis what you want, a competent make up artist should be able to give you a look you will be happy with! Glad it worked out!
