D&T,

I hope your husbands family are found safe and OK. Dust for them.

Danny,
glad to here you and SO are fine. Good news.

Its such an awful thing, and coming so soon after the NewZealand quake.... :((

Reminds me of last year when there was the awful earthquake in Haiti followed by the even bigger earthquake in Chile. Hope it's not the start of a trend.

I watch coverage, and it is so scary, so sad. The country iappears tiny, and the people appear tiny, from these photos taken from above, and the disaster is so huge. I have faith in them, they are smart, brave people, who like no one else knows how to learn from the past, and they already had one major earthquake, but it is so, so sad. I wish I could help, but I do not know how. So many major events, and you don't know how to help.

Terrible and very sad. I'm sick of crying while watching the news in the morning. Floods in Australia, Christchurch earthquake and now Japan.

My two favourite places Hawaii and Japan in trouble. :((

This is heartbreaking. I have been to the Miyagi prefecture (closest to the epicenter) many, many times and I have many dear friends there.. None of which we have been able to get ahold of.. We are all hoping and praying it is just because they have no power. The main city I have visited and know people is about 16 miles from the coast so I'm hopeful that at least the tsunami did not reach them.

Sparkly - the coverage I've seen indicated that the the tsunami made it six miles inland. Bad enough - and an incredible distance, when you think about it, but not to where your friends live. I hope you hear from your friends soon.

D&T- I hope that you are able to contact them soon and that you find that they are well. I am so sorry you have been affected by this disaster.

Love to you and your family,
Deb

What a disaster - the photos, the news is terrifying. This has been a dreadful year for so many people :(sad

D&T I am praying that you hear good news soon. Danny I'm SO glad you and yours are okay!

DH's family was visiting Japan just a couple of weeks ago. My relief knows no bounds.

We got confirmation that there was no damage from the tsunami where my friends are, just (?) earthquake damage. The people we have heard from are fine but it is tough trying to find everyone over there obviously.

D&T have you heard anything??

This earthquake has somewhat effected us (though I can't say even remotely of the magnitude of those who live there!). One of my closest friends here left for Japan at 1pm here (2pm local japan time) and was in the air during the earthquake... I have no idea why they didn't turn the plane back, but they landed and never left the airport - spent two nights at the airport and are getting back to korea today and hopefully back here to china tomorrow. As soon as she came back from her trip we had a date to go over all her info because we're supposed to go at the end of april and now we're clearly not sure that's going to happen. I'm not sure what we should do. I look at the videos of the tsunamis and I'm just floored by the devastation. It's truly awesome - in it's more accurate definition.

I was fascinated that the earthquake shifted the earth's axis by 10 centimeters That's a really big mofu earth quake!!!

At first the numbers of dead coming out of Japan were under 100, and everyone was talking about the strength of the buildings which, due to the strict Japanese building codes, managed to withstand the huge eathquake. It was clear, however, to anyone who had seen video footage of the disaster, that people in boats alone had been swept away and that houses had been overrun with a huge tide of water. I had heard that the death toll was over 1,000 last night. This morning, Sunday's, "The New York Times", carries even more devastating statistics, however. Here is an excerpt.

"Japan faced mounting humanitarian and nuclear emergencies Sunday as the death toll climbed astronomically, partial meltdowns occurred at two crippled plants and cooling problems struck four more reactors. Military units and civilian search-and-rescue teams continued their grim and grinding work in the aftermath of the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck the nation’s northern Pacific coast Friday.

In one town alone, the port of Minamisanriku, a senior police official said the number of dead would 'certainly be more than 10,000.' That number is certain to climb as searchers began to reach coastal villages that had essentially vanished under the first muddy surge of the tsunami. The government ordered 100,000 troops into relief roles in the field — nearly half the country’s active military force and the largest mobilization in postwar Japan. An American naval strike group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan also arrived off Japan on Sunday to help with refueling, supply and rescue duties

My best friend's mom just moved there last fall. We haven't heard from her since they started evacuating. I have a hard time watching the footage. I cannot imagine everything I've known and loved being washed away, or reduced to rubble. My heart is aching for them.

Prayers for the people of Japan. These news of the power plant is terrible.

Sandra Bullock has just donated 1 mln to help the people of Japan after the earthquake. I deeply respect her. Her heart matches her talent.

I'm so sorry didn't come back to this thread, They apparently moved to Germany just a few weeks prior :appl: but I'm not on FB to keep up with them  , Thanks for all who inquire. I hope everyone that has loved ones and friends have heard good news as well.
Dragonfly- I hope you hear from them soon. I know how you must feel... sick to my stomach. I have met some incredible people from Japan, they have moved back and I have lost contact with them through the years (since they dated my friends), I hope and pray they make it ok.

:appl: That's a bit of luck!

My friends made it back from Japan. They landed about an hour after the earthquake and were diverted to another airport as the one they were scheduled to land in was closed. They spent a night in that town then had to make their way to tokyo so they could get a flight back to china. They had to sleep in the airport there, made it back to China then their son was deported because he only had a single entry visa instead of multiple entry so they finally got a flight to korea (they wanted to send them back to tokyo!!!) and stayed there another 2 nights to get the visa paperwork taken care of. What a mess!! We tell her she's radiant and glowing.

I'm glad to say that my friend's mom is ok! Their home did have damage but they fortunately didn't lose everything. Me and my friend are working together to gather supplies from those we know to send over.
