Seismologists are still determining the magnitude - I've seen numbers from 7.9 to 8.8.

Holy Moly!

It was offshore... hopefully there won't be great damage or loss of life onshore.

ETA...

Oh my goodness... aerial footage of the tsunami waves rushing in to one of the coastal areas in Japan are just incredible... and sobering.

This is going to result in an incredible loss of life.

My best wishes to the people of Japan, especially our PS members there. I hope you and your loved ones are all safe.

It looks horrible. So so sad. The people of Japan will be in my thoughts.

One of my classmates has family in Japan, but I'm not sure where. I hope they're safe.

It's terrible. Incredible damage. The people of Japan are in my thoughts.

Terrible.

Tsunami headed for Hawaii. We're evacuating.

Good luck, Danny. Stay safe.

Our thoughts are with the people of Japan and the rest of the Pacific Rim. The images look devastating :blackeye:

The footage is unbelievable. I just don't know what to say, other than out thoughts are with all of Japan and those in the Pacific rim. Dad's senior class at school is currently hosting 10 students from Tokyo, the poor things. It's just so frightening.

Good luck Danny, stay safe xx

This is horrific. Just look at this video!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6xSj6Eggtw take note of the people in cars trying to drive away, though it is unlikely that they will make it.
:((
My thoughts and prayers are with them all.

This morning they said 8.9. That is humongous! Prayers for the Japanese -- I spent a great deal of time there, 2 to 3 months per year for 9 years & got really fond of the Japanese people. Difficult as it is, they will cope with it. Condolences & best wishes for them.

Danny -- hope you are ok, if you are able to read this. Your new place, too! Sending dust to you & SO.

--- Laurie

8.9 is the number the seismolgists seem to have settled upon. I saw a video of the inside of a store during the quake. Goods were falling of the shelves and onto the floor. Instead of trying to find the places safest for themselves, the female workers placed themselves in front of the goods and tried to keep them from falling off the shelves!!! I later noticed that they had particularly protected the glass wine bottles after one had broken on the floor. The dedication of the people towards their work and the greater good when life was at stake was simply unbelievable!

So I think you are right, Laurie. I am not saying there will not be terrible hardship and suffering in Japan, just that the people will endure and overcome it. They are very strong and determined.

Cannot watch the video just yet...heading off to school, and I know I would end up in tears, looking all messy with smudged makeup. I did see some of the photos on nytimes.com, and luckily my friends who are in Japan have updated their facebook status so I know they are okay. One friend in Tokyo is safe, but has to stay in her office at least another day, since the roads are all blocked and the transit is not running.

Prayers for those in Japan.

Oh how awful! My thoughts and prayers to Japan.

Stay safe Danny and SO!

Awful, my prayers are going out to everyone who is affected :blackeye:

Do we have any PS friends in Japan?

I barely made it to work today - couldn't peel my eyes off the TV. It's absolutely horrendous - my thoughts are with everyone in Japan, and all other Japanese people outside of Japan.

Sorry, I posted my own posting... we are 3 hours later than the East coast. I did not see this thread. My best wishes and compassion to PS-ers living in Japan and to all inhabitants of these islands. Incredible magnitude, abd horrible tsunami after...

Even if it was offshore, there are many fishermen in Japan. Hopefully, they do not fish in that area...

Has anyone heard any news about the tsunami heading towards the US West Coast? My cousin and his wife live in San Diego and so far I haven't been able to get ahold of them; I hope this means they are heading towards higher ground...

I believe the first wave hit in Oregon a few minutes ago.

My heart is aching for everyone in Japan and Hawaii and on the west coast. Especially Japan. I can't imagine the terror.

My dear friend just came home from Okinawa and I'm beyond, beyond, beyond thankful.

It's just heartbreaking...and I wish them all safety and send all my compassion and sympathy for those who lost so much today...

Very upsetting! I just turned on my computer so this just read about this! :(

How much warning do people get? Is it pretty much earthquake then water or do they have a 10 or 20 min notice or what?

How much warning you get depends on you distance from the epicenter, where the tsunami radiates out from like when you drip a rock into a lake.

The closer you happen to be the less warning you get.
If you are close enough you get no warning.

California has several hours of warning.
If the epicenter was just off California's coast California would get little warning but Japan would get the several hours.

the good news is that JP is good at preparing for earthquakes....they even have water walls. however, 8.9 is the highest recorded in JP history. may all in JP stay safe.

My heart goes out to them... DH's aunt lives in Japan, and some cousins... looking for them now :(sad

so sad, I'm at a loss for words. My thoughts are with those in Japan.

Thanks everyone! We're fine and the area where we live wasn't flooded.

We spent the night (with a bunch of other people) parked on the side of the road on a mountain safe from the tsunami waves. We listened to the radio throughout the night for news of what was happening here.

We also heard news about what happened in Japan. It was only this morning that I was able to see pictures . My heart goes out to the people of Japan at this difficult time.

Stay safe, Danny! Good luck to you, your friends and family!

All of the Northweast and Pacific coast is along San Andreas Fault, we all are at a constant risk. I pray that it doesn't happen here.

The world is so fragile.
