Hello everyone, my name is Matthew and I live in New York. I'm 25 years old and this summer I'll be attending LaGuardia Community College for my Associates Degree in Business Management. Afterwards, I'll be transferring to Baruch College for my Bacherlor's and contuining after that I'll be finishing up with my M.B.A..

As most of us know by now, if one is seeking gainful employment in the lucrative industry of sparkling gems and shiny metals, one must have a degree in this field, (most employers/start-ups require it anyhow). So after said business degree's have been obtained, I'll be heading over to G.I.A in Midtown Manhattan and enrolling as a full-time student for my Graduate Gemologist Degree (this degree is accompanied by 2 other diplomas, I'm considering Jewelry Design and/or Colored Diamonds).

So as you can see, this is going to take an estimate of 6 and a half years to be fully completed. I have the time to spend as I'm already accepted, but I do not want to wait that much time to get my hands on some serious experience. I've been purchasing my own gems and have learned a great deal just from these acquisitions, so just imagine an apprenticeship?

I can see color zoning and minute inclusions in both dark gems and light gems, as well as in rough and polished gems. All without a loupe. I'll be in time purchasing a loupe, a scale and also some display cases. I can get the loupe relatively quickly.

Aside from my eye on the gems, I also design my own pieces. I have pages among pages of my drawings, some in color some just quicker sketches. I have a notebook full of my ideas related to jewelry and marketing, and at current standing have some written down ideas for advertisements as well as 2 beautiful young lady's who have agreed to be model's for me. Both over 18 years of age. Both living in New York. I also have a digital camera and have a good eye for photography, it being a relaxing, almost poetic past time.

If anyone is interested I can tell you in some more detail just what exactly ignited my insatiable passion for gems. I've been enthralled by nature's little masterpiece's since the age of 23 and haven't looked back since. I have some mapped out plans for when I get my business going, from the slogan to the packaging of the piece to the color pattern of the shopping bags to the layout of the store and how security will be handled.

I have my own supply of gems, I can use my own roughs and maybe even some of my polished gems as well. I completely understand the safety risk and theft risk, so I am completely open to a background check. As I'll be able to provide my own material, I only need from you the experience and machinery. I need the experience of cutting the gem, faceting the gem, polishing the gem, learning the gem. At current standing I have a book that I log all of my gems into, noting characteristic after characteristic. It's almost spiritual to see a gem go from the rough state, to the polished state. Knowing that you were responsible for giving that gem new life and unleashing it's inner beauty is awe-inspiring. I'm dying to get learning and I cannot wait another second to facet and polish.

This journey has been very rewarding in many ways. I can recall in vivid detail when I held my first incredibly large Tanzanite, to when I've seen my first 67 carat yellow Diamond ring at Harry Winston on 5th avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Thank you for reading, and I hope to be someone's apprentice.
