Look what's growing in my veggie patch

A baby dove! Went out to water a few minutes ago and there it sat -- 3 inches from tip of beak to tip of tail. Parents were sitting in a bush cooing at it. I didn't see it at first and almost gave it a shower.

We have a robin's nest just on the edge of a fence - I hope the cardinals and crows don't disturb it.

The parents will spend about a day feeding it where it sits and then hopefully it will be ready to fly away. My veggies will just have to stay thirsty until the baby is fully fledged. My avatar kitty would love it as a snacky but he is indoor only and prohibited from harassing the local wildlife. I didn't even tell him the bird was there.

That is precious! When I was little, a wild dove sort of adopted our backyard as her home and she lived in one of our trees. She greeted us every morning and we made a little bird house for her and she was a wonderful part of our family. Our 2 dogs and cat didn't bother her at all.

Welllll, I just planted everything last week so most everything is eensy weensy. Scaled way back this year and planted zucchini (hubby eats his weight in this stuff), eggplant, lemon cucumber, lots of basil, heirloom tomatoes. In addition to all that, last year I also had beans, peas, carrots, beets, jalapenos & onions. Fed the whole neighborhood 3x over.
