I have long hair- a little past my mid back. It's very fine but I have a lot if it. Part if the fine-ness is it can't hold body. Many people have tried. Even ratting my hair fails, it falls right out of the rat. On the flip side, it's really shiny...so I've got that at least. I've had it styled the same way for several years. Basically, cut with long layers and then side sweeping bangs. I'm sick of it. I want to keep it long but don't really know of any options. I don't want bangs. I don't want short layers. Ii do want to keep it long. Any ideas?? Right now I've got a side part. I usually flat iron it to get the kinks out (I shower at night) and that's about it. The only requirement is I have to be able to put it in a pony tail.

A young woman named Rose Russo has an awesome YouTube video on how to cut your own hair. I've been using her method for a couple years now. My hair is super long, but also thick and wavy, so it doesn't look exactly like hers, but I wish it did! It sounds like your hair is more like Rose's. She has great style with dramatic layers, but it's still very long:

Edited because I posted the wrong video.

I also have very fine long hair. I recently cut my hair pretty much exactly like Cat Power with blunt bangs. The length is the same too-mine might be a little bit longer. (Pic below.) I was anti-bangs for a while but finally broke down and I'm glad I did! I've been trimming them myself and it's been fine. I think I'm going to order a pair of haircutting scissors but my regular sewing scissors are working well too.

You can watch tutorials on how to trim your bangs yourself on YouTube, but my hairdresser showed me how at a free bang trim because I told her I would rather just trim them myself even if I mess them up. It's a PITA to get a bang trim every 2-3 weeks! And if you're totally anti-bangs, how about doing something with the color? Highlights/ombre/etc.?

One bonus of color is that it damages your hair shaft and makes it less fine! I have ombre hair right now and my hair looks a lot fuller.

Haven- Interesting video. My hair does look similar to hers. Not sure I have the b@lls to cut my own hair though...

Thing2- I am planning on getting color. I dye it myself right now. I think I'm going to get highlights. Ive done it in the past and have liked it, but stopped due to time and money.

DO EET! DO EEEEET!
I'm just kidding. It is a lot of fun, though.

I just posted the video because I love her hairstyle and thought it might look good on you. It would totally showcase your rockin' eyes.

Don't be scared-hair grows back! And worst case, it looks uneven and you have to go to a hairdresser! I used to cut my hair myself when it was super short and it was fun. I might try cutting my hair myself, although I don't want layers like the woman in the video has.

How about a body wave perm? Would that work?

I also have long hair, and I'm also a bit bored! Braids are really popular at the moment, but often tricky! I grew my 'bangs' out for a change of pace.. not exactly instant gratification! But it kept me entertained for a while.

Yup! Don't be scared! I haven't had my hair cut by anyone other than myself in 14 years, and nobody can tell! People are shocked when I tell them. I have the basic long hair (lower back) that's naturally wavy but I wear it straight typically. I just cut the ends as necessary and put some layers in occasionally.

another long haired pricescoper reporting in.

i need long hair blunt cut. very little layering and only at the ends within the last 1-2 inches. i need the body. layered like in the video makes my hair look very very skimpy/sparce. the way i have it now i have people asking to touch my hair!

no bangs. some of the hair in front around my face is shorter due to breakage but falls to frame my face as the day goes on. works for me whether down or up.

w thanks!

Hmm, interesting...I hadn't thought about a perm since 1988 or so. Perhaps....

Maybe I need to follow this thread... says the person who cut her hair once a year.

Im a long haired Pricescoper too! Long hair is just easier and more fun than short hair. :appl:

As a former hairstylist I will tell you this, if you have fine hair do NOT attempt to cut it yourself. Trust me, you need a great pair of sharp scissors and a skillfull technique or every mistake will show. Those with thick-ish, wavy and curly hair may find home hair cut a lot less forgiving.

Here's what I would do, make an appointment with a hair stylist who specializes in styling hair into updos. Why? She can show you interesting ways of styling you hair. Think messy bun, sleek bun aka Lauren Conrad bun or even a sock bun, headbands, braid in front and over the the side, half up half down, lower pony with a poof at the crown, even sponge rollers or carusso steam rollers (they work great for fine hair that wont hold a curl)--for beachy wavey curls. The greatest thing about long hair is that you can wear it so many ways, that you should never be bored.

In the mean time find a movie star with similar facial features and hair texture and get ideas from their haircuts. Or buy a few magazines that feature hair cuts or hair syling. If you can afford the luxury book an appointment with the best hairstylist in town (or NYC or LA for that matter) and let them make suggestions for haircut and a few east to maintain highlights and lowlights.

Finally, make sure it is your hair your bored with. I can't tell you how many times I saw women turn attention to their hair when their hair wasn't what the problem was. Bored with a job, bored with life, bored other things can make us feel blah and then that perfect hairstyle seems boring too. I usually save That one for ladies who obsess about their hair or make sudden drastic changes, but really this doesn't sound like you. You sound more like you want to freshen up your look. :wink2:

I hope this helps.

LOL. That'd be me too.

I have long hair - it's right at the small of my back now. Same type as yours amc - very fine, won't hold a style for more than five minutes without half a jar of goop, and I detest washing goop out so I never bother. I keep it super layered to add some volume - seems to work better with my face than any other style I've tried, and DH prefers it long.

I cut it myself too. Well, cut may be too generous a term - I just sort of hack when it looks like it needs hacking - so the choppy, forgiving layers are probably the only maintainable solution ::) all in all I couldn't say I take particularly good care of it, but I don't dye it and rarely fry it so...

Are those with thick hair doomed to never be able to wear a bun? Unless I stick a million pins into my head, they won't hold up. It's just too heavy and fine at the same time, so it unravels at the slightest movement. My hair is 6 inches past the top of my shoulders. Am I doing something wrong?

I only recently found A stylist--before that I had been cutting my own hair for almost a decade. It's actually a lot less scary than you think. You just have to use decent scissors. I bought a pair for $40 bucks at the beauty supply--theyre not professional, but they work well on my hair, which is medium/fine and medium texture.

My technique is to brush all my hair forward towards my forehead. Make sure that it's all smooth and put it in a ponytail right on your forehead. Then cut it so that it's all straight/even on the ends. When you let your hair down it will have long, soft layers.

...if you're feeling brave ;P

Thank you for this! I will definitely be looking through magazines or online. I'm most often told I look like Elizabeth Hurley, so I look for pictures of her hair. I am definitely bored with my hair. But I also want to change it because it is something I can change right now. I have a three month old and am not super happy with my body right now, but do to a variety of reasons I can't do a whole lot about it. Plus the lack of sleep and not having any time for myself, well, I figured a new hair style would be something to treat myself with.

I will post any ideas I see. My appt is next Wednesday.

How do I find the best hair stylist in town? I have been looking all of my life! As a consequence, I have literally been wearing my hair long, with bangs (just like the picture posted in this thread) since high school. I'm 38 years old. :)

I have a ton of hair, so this is what I do when I want to wear a bun:
I part my hair into two or three sections, make a bun with the first section, then wrap the hair from the second around the first, and do the same with the third. It requires a couple extra pins than if I could just make a bun with all of it at once, but it's not too bad.

The next time you see someone with hair like yours that is styled really well, ask her who she sees. My sister A has super thick curly hair, and she could never find a stylist who knew how to handle it. A couple years ago she saw a woman with hair just like hers, but it was cut so well that it looked amazing, and she asked for a reference. It worked! Now she has a great stylist.
