Another thread has been asking about input from the ladies into their engagement rings. It''s got me wondering how many women were really and truly surprised when their guy popped the question. With all the input it seems that most women had during the process, I would think it have taken some of the surprise out of the whole thing.

My question is, how many of you ladies had absolutely NO idea that he was going to propose?

In my case, I wasn''t surprised about the proposal, because we had been discussing marriage for a while. He mostly just shocked me with the manner in which he did it, and I had absolutely no input at all as far as the diamond or the ring. I''m sure some people were able to be suprised to some degree about the place and time (and maybe even the ring itsself). But I''d like to hear if anyone just had the total shock of their lives, and didn''t even see it coming when it happend.

I wasn''t at all - he kept hinting even though we had only been dating 2 weeks! Here we are nearly 19 happy years later

He actually proposed "properly" after 8 weeks!

I knew what I was getting, when I was getting it (at least what day)...just didn''t know what time that day.

Me too ame!!!! That is too funny.

I was so completely surprised and taken aback by the proposal that I said "no."

I was really surprised because he proposed on our 5 month dating anniversary, I think he was just as surprised. It was totally spontaneous. We had good food, good wine, and the conversation just headed there, and before I knew it, he was asking if I''d marry him, and getting all teary and sentimental. I remember giggling a lot, and asking him "Are you serious? Are you really proposing?" and after I said yes, he told me not to tell anyone until we got the ring. We went ring shopping the following weekend, and received the ring another 2-3 weeks later. I waited almost a month before telling people that I was engaged!

I was totally shocked. As I mentioned on the other thread, we had talked about marriage but I thought it was way off. I had no idea the proposal or ring was coming when it did. I am one of the few people I know that was totally surprised. My husband is proud of the fact that he "blew me away!".

I was and wasn''t. We had been dating for 4.5 years, living together for three of those years. So I knew married was coming otherwise something was wrong here. He took me to the store and ordered my setting for valentine''s day and I knew he was looking at diamonds. He even told me I would have it by my b-day. So no I wasn''t surprised. I was surprised about how and when he did it (obviously he did it early). It was perfect though.

I was very surprised... he'd hinted to my parents but I was totally out of the loop.

I was sick that day, we were supposed to go to the lake in Oakland and to lunch but I was too miserable & feeling 'blech'. So, he proposed(in ringless Continental European fashion LOL!) in my parent's kitchen.

I was still in my pyjamas, looking horrible I'm sure(no makeup, sickly) and we were standing in front of the refrigerator.

Well, I actually was.

I was involved in the process, even there when he picked out the stone. I got to see the ring "one last time" before it went to the safe.

He told me then - he would propose when he was ready. I wasn''t allowed to ask about it anymore.

This was before my b-day.. then xmas... then.. I thought he''d keep it into the new year. In fact, I found out later he was going to propose on our trip to Germany - mid january.

But it ended up --he proposed on new years eve. I WAS SURE it wasn''t going to happen (cause i thought I checked everywhere.. bad...bad.. laney lol!) and we were on a trip.

So I was REALLY REALLY surprised...

so I thought he will propose me .now we have 5 children !

I was taken by complete surprise. We had been together for 8 yrs waiting for me to get thru college and grad school. I was so shocked I said NO WAY. And to this day he keeps saying I said no to him. He bought the ring all by himself bought it in September and proposed on x-mas eve. I always told him that if he was to propose it HAD to be x-mas eve. it was very nice and romantic.
