Kitty labor!

We''re fostering a gorgeous calico cat at the moment - we got her on September 5 and were told she was approximately halfway through her pregnancy with 5 kittens. I''ve been lavishing her with affection, just counting down the days until she gives birth. Since she''s such a combination of colors, and we have no knowledge of the father, it will be very exciting to see what the kittens look like.

A real surprise!

Anyway, she just lost her plug about an hour ago and is already starting to have contractions. Methinks it will be a very long day at work tomorrow after playing midwife all night!

I just wanted to share because I''m so excited!!! The babies are almost here!

Mostly white with brown on the top of the head and down the back. I don''t know how to get it to nurse though - it can''t seem to find the right spot and when I direct it, it just veers off in another direction!

Oh, how exciting! I''ve only seen kitty births once and it was way cool. The Mom cat was purring the whole
time...when I compare her labor to mine I wonder what I was doing wrong!

They usually don''t nurse the moment they arrive - it takes a few minutes for them to get their bearings, and if mom is still in labor, she may need a breather.

Woo can''t wait to see what the rest of them are like! We adopted a dog that we didn''t know was pregnant at the time about 10 years ago. Well, she pretty much adopted us. She gave birth to 7 puppies and it was so awesome seeing each one come out and looking at the array of colors. One didn''t make it (failure to thrive I suppose, she didn''t even want help it along or break its sac open) but the others grew up to be lovely dogs! You haven''t heard noise until you''ve heard 6 Beagle mix puppies baying for attention!

Is she calm? My sister''s cat was running around the basement while giving birth, the kittens plopped out wherever she was at the time! She wouldn''t settle down (we tried to keep her down and calm...wasn''t happening)... and she was HOWLING a death scream with each kitten! it was terrifying! But all the kittens were healthy, none were injured... My sister named one "Candy" because momma kitty ''had'' her on the "Candyland" game box! I''ll never forget that experience!

LOL I had one kitty get startled by the 4th of July fireworks, and had her kittens allllll over the front yard. We had no idea how many she had, so I walked around outside until I would hear one crying and then go get it. Poor things, a lot of them didn''t make it.

She''s only a first time mom but she''s calmer than me!! My hands are shaking! The second kitten was harder - it was stuck for a few minutes. It''s mostly black with a white blaze down his/her face. All is well now though and I think Momma''s already starting to pant for the third.

The third (a calico, like her) and fourth (all white) have arrived safely! Her ultrasound suggested there were 5, so only one more to go.

Wow, one more to go!!! Happy all is well so far!!

All of the kitties. The last was mostly ginger, with a bit of white -- the exact opposite of the first! All is well and momma seems very healthy and content. She was a star!

And a photo of the first, since it was the driest and fluffiest.

It has funny, little folded down ears -- only one other in the litter has the same thing. The rest are normal. Maybe the dad was part Scottish Fold??
