This requires a bit of explaination so bear with me. We moved into a condo with an odd layout a few months ago. The bottom/ground floor is the front door with just the laundry room on that level, then a flight of stairs, then a large landing with the bathroom, another flight of stairs and the rest of the condo. When we moved in, we wanted to put the litterbox in the laundry room, but it was packed to the gills with crap so we put it up the one flight of stairs on the bathroom level temporarily.

We finally have it organized enough to move the cat box down to the permanent home for it, the laundry room. Which we did three days ago. You guessed it, our Lovable But Stoopid cat can''t find it. We''ve carried her down and set her in it repeatedly, including when one of the other cats was using the box so she could see that yes, that''s the litterbox and you poop in it. Well, of course, she won''t. Instead she keeps using the corner by the bathroom where the box used to be.

She''s always been a a few french fries short of a happy meal- though we love her!- but this is driving me batty. Today when she peed up at the bathroom level, I found her downstairs, in the laundry room, right near the catbox, right afterwards. Gah! Whyyyyy?????

When she was a kitten, she kept peeing in one corner, rather than the catbox, so what I finally did was put another litter box right where she insisted on going, and gradually scooted it towards the one I wanted her to use, and then finally got rid of the extra one. That worked. And it seems like I might have to do that now, but I''m afraid it''ll be a LOT harder in this house, because the distance between her pee-corner and the catbox is just stairs. Small ones. And she''s FAT. A teensy litterbox that would fit on a stair would probably not fit her big butt now.

Any other ideas? She''s 15, and quite fat, and doesn''t like change much.

It''s also driving her brother nuts. He got furious at her for corner-peeing tonight and chased her down the hall growling and nipping at her. (He did that when she was little and not box trained.)

one thing you can try doing is having two litter boxes for a while. One where you''d like them to go, and one where they like to go. Stop cleaning the one in the location you don''t like. Since cats like cleanliness, the hope is that your cat will start to prefer the area you clean consistently and stop using the ''bad'' litter-box. Maybe that will work better than inching the litter box to a different location

I have no help to offer and I''m sorry to say that it sucks that this is happening but it made me laugh just the same. This is coming from someone that found her cat peeing on a blanket on a chair because he was too scared to walk past the dog box (crate) to get to his box. It took me a couple of days to figure out why my house suddenly smelled like cat urine. Nice.

He now has an upstairs box and a basement box just in case.

it is difficult to change an older cat.....the move was stressful and a change of litter box at that time. she''s fat and finds it hard to go up and down. it may be cold where you''ve put the box. she doesn''t have a lot of years left. personally, i''d give her her box in the bathroom where she was using it.

It could be that will be what happens eventually- if she insists on it despite my plotting, well, who am I to argue with cat butt?

It just is frustrating because it''s, like, right smack dab in the entryway on the nice stone floor, and we were kinda hoping that the catbox wouldn''t be the second thing people walking into our home would see. (It would be nice if a catbox fit into the bathroom, but it actually doesn''t, it sits on the landing- the bathroom is quite small.)

Oddly, she actually does hang out down where the box is now fairly often, so I''m kinda mystified as to why she won''t use the box there... It''s actually warmer than the upper apartment area, and there are driers to hide in and clean clothes to sit upon. And boxes to scratch at. Good times! I think it may be just that it''s very hard for her to change habits, and she is a bit silly. Lucky for her she''s cute and sweet.

I would do some really hardcore cleaning where the box used to be, so she can no longer smell it. Sometimes that is all it takes, but I do like the suggestion of having two boxes, one in each spot, and then stop cleaning the one by the bathroom. You may have to deal with the smell for awhile, but it''s better than her going on the floor. I''d do the two boxes first, then the deep clean.

Ditto

Could you maybe put the litter tray back to where it was for a few days then start moving it a foot or so every day till it''s where you want it to be? Maybe you can gradually get the cat to get used to the new location.

I have nothing more to add since I was going to suggest some of the same things others have already mentioned. I do wonder though if she''s marking her territory by using that same spot. I know this is something that dogs do but I''m not sure about cats (we have two cats but they haven''t marked their territory in that way).

Maybe one of the other cats harassed her when she tried to use the box downstairs, so she doesn''t want to anymore?

NO SONAR PEE LAKE TODAY OR YESTERDAY!!!!

Sonar actually used the box I do believe. DH had the day off yesterday- or, well, not *off* exactly, he was installing our kitchen sink and drain- and he carried her down and plopped her in the box over and over again, and I did it a couple of times after work when she was yowling suspiciously. I think she''s finally gotten the idea. She''s just, er, a smidge slow on the uptake. Per usual

I think the enforced exercise up and down the stairs is pretty good for her actually. Otherwise she would just lay in front of the space heater and singe her whiskers all day and never move voluntarily. (The space heater is her dear love. She wraps her arms around it gleefully when it comes out in the fall, it''s a beautiful love affair- we joke that her tabby stripes are actually grill marks.)

I really hope she''s not just holding it and planning to create a small inland pee-sea when I''m least expecting it.

(In other exciting non-urine-related news, I have a KITCHEN SINK. At long last, a sink!!! And counter underlayment, which will be actual counters in two weeks. No more paper plates, no more walking downstairs to the bathroom for water... ah, life is good, and my husband is clever for figuring out how to install sink.)

Would you mind sending your husband to my house now, my new sink has been banished to basement and it seems unlikely that it will ever get installed.

And yeah about the cat!

Oooh I feel your pain. We've been sinkless (and in fact kitchenless) since we moved into our sorta-finished condo in August. You may borrow the boy, just return him eventually

. I'm *really* impressed with his kitchen creating abilities actually

. He'd never done anything quite like building out a kitchen and he's done amazing work, and installed our stove and washer/dryer a few weeks ago too. (We got several quotes for $4000- $6000 for counters, and he's gonna get it done with some nice granite tile for about $600! Granite tile will arrive in two weeks and I'm so excited!!!) I was soooo thrilled to not have to hang out with the wingnuts in the laundromat anymore! AND I HAVE A SINK. Yay for sink! I hope your sink gets installed someday
