Okay, I''m at my wit''s end.

One of my cats (I''m not sure which, but I suspect reigning attitude queen Lola) is pooping on the carpet in the dining room. I''m thinking it''s behavioural and not illness because:

- both cats pee exclusively in the litter box
- new litter was poured in YESTERDAY
- it''s solid poop
- the litter box is on the main floor, not upstairs

So what the heck do I do? They''ve had the same litter forever, so I don''t think that''s the problem. I thought the fact that it was a covered box might be the problem, so I took the cover off and it''s still a problem. The litter box is in a small, confined bathroom. Before they were in a laundry room. Both confined spaces.

I''m thinking maybe it''s an attention thing? Life has been hectic and I think maybe they''re (she''s) mad that I''m not around as much. Does anybody have any other ideas?

How many cats do you have? We have issues with one of our cats, too, and one thing that *may* help you is by putting carpeting under and around the litter box. Cats love to scratch at the carpet after doing their stuff and if you put scraps of that under/around the box it may help some.

Also, be sure to clean the carpet spot really well. Good luck.

Thanks. I have two cats. I''ll try putting something under the litter box.

Definitely use Nature''s Miracle on the spot on the carpet so she won''t keep coming back to the same spot - it might entice the other kitty to start if she smells it there. try giving kitty TONS of attention when you''re home and see if she stops!

There''s a product called Feliway that comes in a diffuser and a spray. It stops cats from eliminating in the wrong place. I can''t explain exactly how it works but it does help. You can find it on the internet. It''s really important to clean the boxes everyday and it''s suggested you have a box for each cat plus an extra. It might help to put a litter box nearer to the location where the cat is going.

If it''s from lack of attention the Feliway may help. It''s a pheremone thing.

Ditto monkeypie on the nature''s miracle. Also, I do think its worth a trip to the vet to verify that it really is behavioral and not medical - a sudden change in potty behavior with no obvious cause can be a classic sign of medical issues...

Is there a chance he''s constipated?

We were finding rogue turds all over the place, and finally one day heard him crying before he pooped. We took him to the vet, and he was constipated. We put laxative in his food now, and haven''t had a problem since.

The issue could be a territorial one. I had far fewer litter box problems when I had one litter box per cat. Unfortunately my house isn''t all that large, so I ended up going back to one box for both cats.

I''ve had good luck with a product called Cat Attract. It''s just a litter that''s formulated to smell good to cats rather than humans

and you just add some to the cat box when you''re having those kinds of problems. http://www.preciouscat.com/
