I''m working on dial-up so I will keep this short as I have been having problems with DSL for about a week or so (and haven''t been on the forum for about 1.5 weeks). As I am on dial-up I have not taken the time to read the other post (I aslo have a slow dial-up connection).

How best to help?

It is obvious to me that a lot of people will be relocating and starting over.

So...

Here is my offer: Anyone from the Katrina affected area who is looking for a place to stay while they start over, and who meets some simple requirments that I have - is free to stay at my place while you start over.

I do not have room for many. 1 or 2, perhaps with a child.

I live a basic lifestyle, and do not have a lot of furnature.

I have asthma and food allergies: No smooking, and the house is "allergy" free with 7 large HEPA air filters scattered throughout it. Actually perfect for someone else with allergies.

You get a bedroom with a bed, you can use the other bathroom. There is a 3rd bed room that I use for my office that could be converted for another if needed.

Biggest issue: Are you a positive attitude person and a bulider willing to take responsibility for your life. I, like all, have my faults and issues; but you will need to be people who take responsbilty for building your life - and not depend on the government to fix everything.

I have a small largly internet based side business. Someone else who is running a similar business would be welcome (as long as you understand that there is pleanty of room for all the legitimate oportunities).

I am not planning to provide much other financial assistance - largly because I don''t have much room in my budget at this time. But I can provide the use of the extra rooms in a small house in a nice neighborhood in NE Wisconsin (utilities included).

I understand that it will take months - and perhaps even years - for you to regain a normal life.

If anyone is inerested, or anyone knows of someone who is interested, please PM and email me. We can set up a phone call to discuss the details.

I do request this contact within the next week or so (say by about Sept 14). In about 3 weeks I start working a plant outage with 13 hour days 6 days a week and will not have much time to sort out or set up things for people for those 6 weeks (I work, eat, and sleep).

Might I suggest that those who are wondering how to help. Hold out a helping hand if you have a place that someone could stay while starting over. Feel free to list what you can offer for help.

Thank you, Perry, for your kind and warm heart. You are an amazing soul to volunteer your place of residence to help others. Here is a website that you can put a general post concerning your offer of housing:

http://katrinahousing.org/

http://KatrinaHousing.org has a volunter site to post and search for housing listings. You can donate your room/apartement/home, etc to survivors as they can search the listings to find a place to stay. This is being promoted by MoveOn, who will get RedCross and FEMA to promote it as well. The search functionality will be complete later tonight. But postings can go up now.

Please pricescopers open your heart and your homes like Perry has. God Bless everyone!

I am one that is touched by this kind heart.

and tonight I have DSL back (it comes and goes...).

Thanks Jaded, Curly, and Milly. Sometimes we get so caught up in our own issues that we forget that we have to help others.

I had already posted on some other housing sites as well. I guess we will see who is interested in spending a winter in Wisconsin. I am aware that others are offering more, but I offer what I have; and trust that the local charities would be willing to help for any who take me up on my offer.

Perry,
What a kind and generous offer that is. It speaks volumes about your giving nature.

In the wake of this, people have nothing--no homes, no possessions, no jobs, no income, nothing... how do you start over when you have no place to sleep? What you offer is the chance to rebuild a quality life by providing the basic foundation of human needs (think Maslov''s heirarchy).

With a safe, warm roof over his head, clean clothes, a bathroom and food, a person can go out and find work and start to put the pieces back together. You are offering this gift to someone. Very special indeed.

This warms my heart! I''m constantly amazed at the generousity of people who often have very little themselves.

Do something - donate money, donate blood, donate time to Red Cross (for fundraising, etc.), start or donate to a food/clothing/sundries drive - even the little things count.

Scintillating...

Bless you Perry, and others like you too. Here''s one more:

Awesome Perry you have my utmost respect for your offer as does everyone else that is doing what they can.
There are a lot of good people that are going to need a hand up recovering from this mess.
To bad most of them will get a hand out instead.
