for the second time in a week. Last weekend I saw a car crash and had to call, and today my neighbor was riding his bike and got hit by a car right in front of my house!

Anyone else ever had a 911 moment?

My gosh! That sounds terrible! Is he doing ok?

SO sorry to hear about your neighbors. I hope they are okay.

I''ve had to call 911 twice: once when I was staying at a motel for a conference and some guys got rowdy and violent right outside of our room, and once when I woke up to hear this awful rhythmic thudding. I prowled around the house for a few minutes looking out the windows trying to figure out where it was coming from until I saw through someone''s window, and realized it was a dude audibly beating his partner''s head against the windowsill, two stories down and an alley across.

Both times, cops came within 5 minutes and responded professionally and accordingly - but, man, 5 minutes can seem like an eternity under the right circumstances.

I wont be visiting, riding or driving by your house anytime in the near future!

Just once when some guy SMASHED into my car and got mad at me!
It was totally his fault, but he was just not going to have it- a quarter of my car was just like GONE.
Nothing else major.

I''m glad you called 911! I hope your neighbor is doing ok! I''ve had to call 911 twice. The first time was while I was in college and a Jeep got into an accident and ended up flipping upside down. The second time was just a few weeks ago and I overheard my neighbors, one male and one female from the voices I''ve heard, (I live in an apartment complex) fighting while I was out walking my dogs. I thought it wasn''t anything major, but I heard shouting and plates breaking from across the street from across their apartment. Then I heard a really loud slap and it almost sounded like someone was getting beaten up. So I didn''t want to risk either of them beating the other and I called 911. Those are the only times I''ve ever called 911.

Yes, the boy is ok... I really am pleased with the response of my city Police and EMS... I had barely closed my phone when I heard the sirens and saw the lights. They sent 8 police cars!!!! The fire station is 2 blocks from my house, so they were there in a jiffy. Poor kid! He got up after it happened and ran the few houses down to his own home. He was tore up a bit, but he didn't seem to have any broken bones. He was terrified, though.

Holy smokes Circe, thank god you saw what was happening with your neighbors and were able to call the police!!
What a scary thing to witness!

You''re jinxing people!

Whenever they''re around you, something happens!

Yes. I''ve callled 911.

For drunk drivers who are weaving.
For brawls outside an apartment where I lived.
For the screams coming from my upstairs neighbor when her husband was beating her.
For the threats made by that same abuser - - to me.
To report grass fires seen while driving past.

DH and I called 911 one time on a obviously EXTREMELY intoxicated driver. He was all over the road, and was stopping when there was no stop sign or light. The kicker was, he pulled into a liquor store. We told the police he was at the liquor store, and we drove past it again a few minutes later, and the police were there, apprehending them.

We have called in a couple of accidents, and while I didn''t have a cell phone at the time, I did witness a hit and run once. I was able to follow the driver, and get the license number and provide it to the police. They did find the driver, and I went to court as a witness, and at that point the driver plead guilty. I felt good about being able to help them find him. He had hit a young kid on a bike. It was TOTALLY the young kids fault, he came across a divided highway at the end of a traffic circle. If the driver had not left the scene, I''m sure he would not have been found at fault, in fact I would have testified in his defense if asked.

I'm glad you were able to call 911 for your neighbour's kid! Glad he's ok, too!

Every time I've been in an accident or witnessed a major one. And I've been in and seen a lot of major collisions.

A few months ago, DH and I were on the way to pick up his car from the dealership before it closed. Passing us to our left at around 60 in a 35 mph zone was this guy on a motorcycle with a hard shell helmet. He had his stereo on as loud as it could go. Around the curve that merged with another street, the stereo got louder. He had lost control, hit the opposite curve, and was thrown from the motorcycle. Called 911, and stayed with him until the paramedics arrived, but by then, more qualified people than me had arrived. I don't know if he lived or died, which is something that still haunts me.

A year or so before, DH and I were on our way to my chiropractors after having been in a car accident earlier that day. We witnessed an 80+ mph head on collision on a major freeway, and called 911. The kid that lost control and flipped into oncoming traffic had just passed us at over 100 a moment before. So sad.

I happened to be on the same freeway when 2 more head on collisions occured months apart from the initial one, and they finally figured out there needed to be a divider.

Good for you to for using 911!!

*Side note:

Remember that most dispatchers have an order of questions they MUST ask, so while it is urgent PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BE PATIENT!! If we don''t get the information out in a specific way it won''t make sense to officers responding..

I cannot express to you how frustrating it is to try and get information in an expedient manner and then be cussed out.. we''re just doing our job!!! Oh I have been called very colorful names indeed. Regardless, I love what I do!!!

SDL- I have so much respect for what you do! I am a first responder, so I do have some training as to emergency protocols. The dispatcher did an amazing job. Like I said- seriously less than 2 minutes and my street was SWARMING with emergency response vehicles!

My tax dollars, hard at work!

I''ve called a few times but I''m typically on the other end - a fire engine or ambulance.

Glad he''s ok. Calling 911 can be stressful but like SDL said, they have a system so answer their questions and follow their direction for the most effective response. Several of my friends are or were 911 dispatchers. Boy do they have some crazy caller stories!

I am glad they are minutes away from you. We usually are very quick to respond but we cover a pretty large area. I know it seems like eternity for us to show up at times. It''s crazy how long 5 minutes can be when you''re in an emergency situation. What shocks me is the people that will not get out of our way!

Yes

When DD#2 daughter was 2 weeks old and stopped breathing, she ended up fine but it was scary
When my oldest daughter was really sick and I found her unconscious. She is fine to, but spent a few days in ICU
In May when I saw a teenage girl jump out of the passenger side of a car going 65 on a freeway
I wish to not have to call 911 ever again......but will if needed

Thank the Lord, no I have never had to call 911.

But thank you to all of you wonderful people who do call and report things like this.

I had to call 911 last week. I was on my way home from work and there was a motorcycle/car accident in a major intersection. I managed to get through but had to call because there were no emergency personell on the scene. I don''t know what happened or how it turned out, but the dispatcher assured me that paramedics were already on their way.

Last winter I called 911 because DH and I saw an elderly woman wandering the streets as we were leaving my parent''s house. We didn''t stop and she didn''t seem hurt but I was concerned. DH thought I overreacted.

Wow, twice in a week! Hopefully everyone is ok...
I am a nurse and work in a nursing home, so I have had to make my share of calls to 911...too many to count!

I hope your neighbors are ok!

No one got hurt, but I was driving to work down the main road through my town, and witnessed an orange Lotus Elise blow up to smithereens about 200 ft in front of me. No one was in the car (the owner got out, thank heavens!). THAT was scary.

Yikes-I'm glad he was okay! I've called 911 a bunch, actually...some of the more memorable times:

In my sophomore year in college I lived in a rented house and I came home with a friend to find it filled with smoke. The fire department was there within minutes. At least 4 (if not more) fire trucks came and blocked off the entire block. They put the fire out in the basement and then blew all the smoke out with big fans, which I thought was really nice. Plus I was holding my terrified cat and one fireman went in my bedroom to get the cat carrier for me!

Another time my now-husband and I woke up at 3 am to horrible screaming. The guy who lived in the apartment across the alley was POUNDING this guy who had apparently pushed or hit a woman at the party he was having. We called 911 and the cops came very quickly, but ended up not arresting the pounder or the poundee.

And recently I drove past a man standing in the middle of a busy highway on the overpass. I think he was definitely mentally ill and contemplating suicide. The dispatcher had gotten other calls about the same man but they hadn't found him yet so I gave them the specific location he was at.

The police and fire departments in my city respond very quickly. I'm lucky!

seems like once a week for one reason or another.
Today''s was for my neighbor for a home invasion of their apartment.

oh my gosh! thats a bit traumatizing I bet... oh Tucksin I hope he''s ok

Oh my goodness!! Hope your neigbour is OK!

I called the police when;

- I saw someone get stabbed at Kings Cross.
- Our friend parked his car out the front of our block of units and when he went to come home all 4 of his tyres had been slashed.
- Our neighbours were having a huge domestic and they started fighting in the hallway, they broke 3 windows throughout the building and the glass security door.

I hope your neighbor is ok.

I had to call 911 when my mom had a kitchen fire. Thank god everything was ok but she had 2nd and 3rd degree burns on her hand and thigh. THANK GOD the firemen were GORGEOUS...my mom was too busy starring at them to think about her pain

In an apartment complex, the woman across the parking lot ran towards me in her underwear while I was walking my dog. She spoke no English and kept tugging me into her apartment while frantically speaking Spanish.

I walk in and her husband is in bed, in his underwear, looking quite dead really. I called 911 and waited. I tried waking him, checking for breath or rising chest or heart rate and found nothing. I considered administering CPR although I was way out of practice.

Luckily the EMS arrived and after about five minutes he woke up as if he was startled from a nightmare. I had answered all their questions so I slowly snuck out.

I''ve called 911 twice...both time from the same location (the place I worked in high school/college).

The first time was when a guy pulled his car into our parking lot. The car was in flames, and he managed to park it right next to a gas tank on the property (stupid...but I guess you''re not really thinking to look out for things like that when your car is on fire). We were obviously a little concerned about that. Luckily, the fire was out before it could spread.

The second time, a girl passed out. She ended up being okay, but it was scary at the time.

I''ve also had 911 called for me when DH (then BF) were in a car accident.

I hope the kid is OK!

Yupp - I''ve definitely called 911. In college, I once there was once a crazy gathering across the street that looked like it was about to get violent, so I called. I''ve called while driving to report drunk/weaving drivers (one time we finally passed the driver and realized it was someone text messaging on the highway). I''ve called when I''ve been in car accidents, both at fault and not. But I suppose those are all pretty routine reasons to call. I''ve never had to call because of an accident/emergency in my own home, knock on wood.
