SEOUL, South Korea – North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has issued a "special pardon" to two American journalists convicted of sneaking into the country illegally, and he ordered them released during a visit by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, North Korean media reported early Wednesday.

I''m so glad they''ve been released. But does it strike anyone else as odd that his wife is the Secretary of State and, um, isn''t this supposed to be her job? I don''t get why the ex-Prez was involved in the first place.

This would be my guess, they haven''t been playing well together.

That's awesome! I love Bill Clinton - always have, he's just such a cool cat - though the cheating stuff wasn't cool.

Thanks, Ellen. I guess they haven''t played well together but now the precedent has been set to go around her.

I think Bill going instead of Hillary was so that the Obama administration could claim this was an unofficial visit that does not set precedent or mean that we are conceding in our stance with N. Korea (or to give other countries the idea that they can hold our citizens and then make us send important people to beg for them back). The 6 o'clock news said that Al Gore, who founded the cable news channel Current that the journalists work for, wanted to go himself, but N. Korea was like, um, could you send somebody more important please? I don't think Bill actually had any negotiating ability -- what Kim Jong Il got out of this was a a media blitz he could spin how he wants.

Well, we could all speculate about it, but since this is skating on the edge of a topic that's not to be discussed, let's just keep it at happy thoughts for the girls and their families!

I certainly didn''t mean to get us off topic. Sorry! I just didn''t this whole "bad marriage" speculation to fester. This isn''t Jon and Kate Plus 8 we''re talking about here!

It''s not unusual to send "special envoys'' not part of the current administration for media events negotiations like this.

I was thinking thank God too! I am so happy!

I know you didn't, and it wouldn't be very hard to do here anyway, no problem!

All I'll say is, from what I heard last night, seems NK wanted a "big ticket" envoy, and has apparently been wanting to meet with this particular envoy since he almost went over there near the end of his term.

At any rate, it worked, and the girls are home. That's what really matters. I truly cannot imagine how relieved they and their families must be.
