A friend of mine keeps the cleanest and most amazing looking jewelry ever just because of how clean she keeps her pieces. I asked her one day last week while at lunch what she cleans her 1.25ct princess cut solitaire and ring guards with when she said she had an at home jewelry steamer she uses every other day after placing her ring and earring in jewelry cleaner. I really didn't want to ask her wait kind or brand she had because I felt I could get an idea of the best I could buy from here. So do any of you ladies own a jewelry steamer you get really good results from. I would really like to purchase one of my own.

I have a Jewel Jet, and I use it about once a week, mostly on my wedding band to get the gunk out from underneath the stones since I don't brush under there (mostly bec I can't get most brushes in there!) and the steamer seems to do better than anything else. Every other cleaning is either with that SparkleSparkle Spray, Windex, 90% or whatever alcohol, Dish Soap (method usually), Mr. Clean or Bath and Body Works "deep cleansing antibac" hand soap or some combination of the above lol. I also dry them REALLY well after I clean them and wash my hands. I will wipe them gently with a paper towel, and then twist a dry end of a paper towel and dab under the stone between prongs on the ering to get the underside dry, then do it again from the other side with another corner of the paper towel. I get all kinds of weird looks in bathrooms.

LOL I've gotten some pretty crazy looks before myself from my husband or any family member that might be around when I've gotten my 3 stone wet. I also have a hard time getting into the under section of my ring and thought a steam cleaner would work just fine for my ring since I don't have the time I wish I did to take my ring to my jeweler to have it cleaned like I should. Does anyone have an idea of best place to purchase a steam cleaner? I love using alcohol to really get all the oils off but I think the steam would really be the effect finishing touch.

I have a jewel jet. I also make sure I soak my ring in solution before I finish it with the steamer. Mr. Clean, no ammonia for me, usually does the trick mixed with some hot water. Or I got some free boxes of oxijewel from owd and it worked well. After the steam I make sure to wipe it all down with a cloth that I got from a eyeglass place. To make sure it's not rough and doesn't leave scratches.

With a MOHS scale of 10, I don't think ANY fabrics will scratch diamond :wink2: However, microfiber is great at removing oils and dirt that show the fingerprints and smudges.

I need a Jewel Jet!!!!!!!

Hahaha! I don't think I will scratch my diamond! I guess it's more of a mind thing for me. Knowing I am using something I know for sure that is soft :) plus, I realized that the eyeglass cloth is really good at getting those finger print smudges off of the surface.

I've also read somewhere about eliminating water spots by dunking your washed/steamed ring into isopropyl alcohol, since it dries quickly without spots. I've been doing this. SO.AWESOME.

Alcohol leaves its own spots behind...just an fyi...I use a lightly dampened with alcohol pointy qtip or a lightly dampened with alcohol paper towel to wipe the stone down with alcohol.

I use a paper towel with the alcohol just to go over it. It sounds like the Jewel Jet is the steamer to get. Going to Bing to do some searches ASAP I must purchase one.

I have a Jewel Jet and it's great! It makes such an amazing difference!

I blow dry my rings, earrings, etc after dunking em in the alcohol. Alcohol dries faster than water, and doesn't get trapped in the tiny nooks and crannies, so it's MUCH quicker. So, after I blow-dry my hair, I lay out a towel I have just for bling, place whatever pieces close together so that I can get em all at the same time, and I press the blow dryer down flat against the items. (I once sent a piece FLYING when it was on the near, but outside perimeter of the hair dryer.. OOPS!) I turn the piece around to the other side, and another quick blast.

I have to let the items wait a few minutes to cool down, but this works for me to eliminate paper or towel lint and fibers, as well as water marks.

DH gave me one for Christmas a few yrs ago, Jewelry Spa, from the Frontgate catalog. I think it cost around $120. I love it. It comes w/a solution to pre-soak jewelry with or without heat -- I use that with care, depending on the gems involved -- & brushes, polishing cloths. The steam cleaner at Tiffany's had more power & oh, made stones sparkle so beautifully! We brought in handsful of our goodies & steamed them before the store opened. This one does a nice job, though.

Thanks everyone for your help. I found a Jewel Jet at Amazon for under 100 dollars before shipping. Can't wait for it to come.

You will love it. I am going to dig mine out now. I soak my jewelry clean every day but the Jewel Jet really makes a difference.

Haha, Okay.. I thought I was the only one who blow-dried her bling after a cleaning ! :rodent:

I was reading up on this link earlier today: https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/engagement-rings/ring-cleaning-care

Some people believe in frequent polishing to keep the rings shiny, but consider that your ring may have 10 years of maintenance free wear and each time you give it to a jeweler to polish you are polishing away six months wear! We suggest polishing is reserved for very special occasions.

Will using the Jewel Jet once a week ruin the ring or reduce the durability? I'm researching into whether they ship to Australia but wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on how frequent you use yours.

Jewel Jet is steam cleaning, not polishing. Polishing done with a jewelers bench is when they grind away the surface abrasions. That can lose mass. Steaming is only using water to blast off dirt and kill bacteria. Polishing is for flat metal surfaces' dinks and scratches. Steam cleaning is to reach those tiny crevices that may accumulate dirt, skin cells, and who knows what else. HTH!

Ok, I am officially putting a Jewel Jet on my Christmas list now

I think you're my jewelry soul mate  lol!!

 I think so too, Madelise !

My husband used to go "WHAT are you doing?"
Me: "I just washed my bling, I don't want spots on it."
Husband:

LOL!! SO is the same way. He gets so mad that I spend more time cleaning and drying my bling before a night out, than I do on my appearance! I barely brush my hair or put on makeup anymore to make myself pretty, but I want my bling always to be performing at its best. haha!!

My other thing is to carrying isopropyl alcohol wipe packets in my purse. It's great for a quick pick-me-up for the bling.

I blow dry too :twirl: to avoid watermarks. Think I will get one of those steam jet.

Yea I purchased one few weeks ago, and its the best, but you can also clean your jewelry by putting it in rubbing alcohol for 5 mins, and then wipe of with a towel.

Yes! I was bidding on one that was going for $35, but it got to $51 (shipping $12) this morning. I saw another one, without a box, but still stated to be brand new, going for BIN $54 + $9 shipping. UH, COME TO MAMA!

It's the older version, the red one, but that's what most of you PS'ers have anyway, right? :naughty:
I can't wait to get it, and clean everything I own.. and bring out my blow dryer :geek:
