I'd watch, but they repossessed my television when I couldn't pay my bills after my last Roberto Coin purchase.

LOLOLOL :D

I think I will check it out- it might make PSers seem that much more normal in comparison if you KWIM. We cannot be as bad as the people they are highlighting. I hope. :cheeky:

LOL I instantly thought of it being a PSer... Naw, we're all too smart here. Plus, we have the SMTB area now!

Oh I want to see this! Do you know if I can find the episode online somewheres? I don't have a TV ;) I pawned it off for bling.. JK. I really don't have one, though!

Is it bad if I watch just to see how blinged out the woman is?

My name is Mayk and I'm a Jewelry Addict... The first step is to admit you have a problem... :errrr:

Not sure about the next steps because I haven't managed to tackle step one. :nono:

Hahah I'm curious! And the teaser didn't say if it was a man or a woman....Kenny? :naughty:

Have known jewelry hoarders or people addicted to home shopping jewelry networks...
a closet full of jewelry..all tags still on the merchandise and never worn...hundreds of items.

Yes, jewelry can be an addiction.

Haha! I know, right!? The link identifies the guest as a woman..."Why you need life insurance & how to figure out how much. A woman struggles to gain control of her jewelry addiction before it’s too late."

$60,000 in seven years... Somehow I have a feeling that pales in comparison to some of our heavy hitters here!

Lord, yes! My 3 carat dream solitaire costs more than $60,000 all by itself!! Of course, I shall never own it, but many other Pricescopers have ones bigger than my dream stone!

Oh goodness...does $60k in 7 years really count?! Surely not...

It would be pretty easy to spend that amount. Looking at the reams & reams of things she bought for it, I wondered about the quality; seems to me she's buying for quantity, maybe at mall stores. If somebody gave me 60K to spend on bling, I'd get maybe 8 very good pieces (or fab stones & worry about setting them with the next 60K!) rather than a whole bunch of meh, which I suspect she has.

But I'm on her side. When Suze Orman said, "You are going to STOP buying jewelry," my stomach lurched. No!

You are all sooooo funny - I would love to see this show, I have heard of Suzie Orman - I think she has been on Ophra's show before.

I know it's a bit of an obsession, but addiction? I suppose it just like shoes or handbags! :naughty:

It really depends on how much money one has. I didn't get to watch the show but if you are worth let's say for example 30 million and you spend 60K on a piece of jewelry that's really not a problem. But if you are worth 100K and you spend 60K over 6 years on jewelry that's a problem! ::)

It's not so much what amount of money you are spending but how much you have after you purchase it and after your expenses etc.

So . . . which PSer was it? Anyone recognize her from the "Let's the faces behind the names" thread? :cheeky:

It is easy to spend 60K on one ring.

My dream solitaire cost more than that as well!!!!

here is the link; not sure if they show reruns http://www.cnbc.com/id/15838523

people have all sorts of addictions
They haven't posted the July 7 show yet... but you can watch full episodes of previous ones. I guess its just a matter of a few days/hours before they post the most recent show. I'm going to be checking back on it, for sure!

Suze Orman has some great advice but she always misses that middle of the road place. She would have you have nothing until you have six months salary in the bank, no debt, retirement fully fund, yada, yada yada. Not bad advice but somewhere along the line people have to live and enjoy life a bit too. Not to the tune of 60k for jewelry but come on Suze - some people won't ever live long enough to fund every fund you encourage! Again, as with most things in life, there needs to be a bit of a balance and moderation in all things IMO!

Yeah, I would guess some PSers spend that on just one or two purchases! :rodent:

Hi,

Suzy does consider age in what she wants you to do. This woman was 60 yrs old, divorced and had apprx $800,000 in assets. The womans' income was 4,000 apprx. Suzy was concerned she wouldn't have enough in retirement. My problem with Suzy Orman is when she becomes the psychologist and analyzes the people. The woman had a heart attack 7 yrs ago and probably thought she was going to die, so why not enjoy life and spend a little. She went overboard and really did become more of an addict who gets a high from buying.

An individual who buy a $60,000 ring is not an addict even if they don't have a large nest egg or 100,000. Those that buy once in a while are also not addicts. But when you see women buying everything in sight, you do have wonder if they aren't addicts. They can't seem to stop themselves.

The woman was just an ordinary gal. Maybe Suze helped.

Exactly! It's great to save as much as possible, but if you never go out and do anything because you want to save a few bucks, that doesn't seem like a great way to live your life. I'm all for saving as much as possible and living within one's means, but you do have to have fun and experience things, too. The way Suze Orman talks, it seems as if she's rather you don't spend ANY money until you have an 8 month emergency fund. I don't think that's realistic in the real world.

I love Suze. I really, really do. I have several of her books and watch her every week. That said, I definitely don't have an 8-month emergency fund. I have about a one month emergency fund lol. I don't think I'm an epic failure though. I have no credit card debt, have a retirement account (albeit small) and in the last two years I have paid off half of my $80K student loans. I should be done with those in another year or two and then I can just start throwing everything into savings and investments. In the meantime though, I'm not turning down dinner invites or a movie with friends like Suze might have me do until I have the 8 months.

I hear you DF! Suze has clearly done well for herself but I sometimes think she's lost touch with the working class. Tomorrow is promised to no one so you can't wait until you are financially set to live your life - you might just run out of time! I'm all for saving and responsible spending but she would make your life terribly boring!

I TOTALLY agree! I am sorry I missed the show, but I would have never watched it with my hubby in the room! I don't want him to start adding up my jewelry purchases over the last 6 years or he might be calling the men with the white coats!

But this is exactly my philosophy...I was SUCH a saver and one day I realized, wait, I am 50 and if I don't enjoy spending some money now, who knows if I'll be able to 20 years from no?! Jewelry just happens to be my favorite material thing to spend money on!

(And with $800k in assets as a single woman, I don't exactly think she is in major danger. She just needs to join PS so we can help her be sure she is buying the best quality! )
