Went up the water spout, down came the rain and washed the spider out, out came the sun and dried up all the rain, the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again.

What is the message of this tale, to you?

I just realized today that I may have misunderstood this children's story/song from the start. But I want to see what other's think the 'moral' of ths story is to see exactly how off base I am.

Huh??? I don''t get how you are off base... Arent we all at one time or other??

I''ve always read it as a message to keep trying and persevere. Then again, I also like spiders, so it was an easy identification for me.

Through rain comes sunshine!

Lisa, yes I'm sure we all are. I just thought it was hilarious how off base I was. See I thought the itsy bitsy spider was like "rockabye baby" (when you examine the words to closely... "down will come baby cradle and all
6.gif
") but I realized today that my interpretation of the moral is being "perseverance is futile" may have been a wee bit pessimistic, and that the song is actually one about second chances.

This is kind of what I''d always thought..
Thritto. You get knocked down, but you get up again.

I always wondered why the spider just didn''t find an indoor spout to climb on.
Silly spider.

We used to sing this song partly in Hebrew to learn new vocabulary words, so I will now have *that* version of the song in my head for the rest of the day, thankyouverymuch.

I''ll admit I''m a bit arachnophobic and I only thought about the fact that the spider got washed away. I never really thought about it past that point, I was glad the spider was gone.

LOL. You are too funny. Remind me not to let you tell the boys stories with morals.

HA!!! I always thought the itsy bitsy spider got washed out by all the rain, the sun comes up and out he comes again... So yes an uplifting end ... But I hate spiders, so wouldn''t mind him getting washed away.....

Me too. Or kill all spiders on sight and save them the trouble.

My boyfriend says the moral is not to be a reckless thrillseeker who goes up waterspouts.

In my defense (hehehe) no one ever sings the song just ONCE. They always repeat it adnaseum. So it sounds like the spider never wins. Ever. So... mentally deficient spider to keep trying something so futile. I always thought the spider was pretty stupid.

My mind works in 'unique' ways.

NF... or you might want to check in with me to make sure that I've got the "correct" moral. *snort*

My kids had a book that continued the story... the spider made a "silvery web" and I don''t remember the details but there were several more refrains and the spider did some other stuff lol

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the kitchen wall, whoosh went the fan and made the spider fall, off went the fan, no longer did it blow, so the itsy bitsy spider, back up the fan did go.

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the big oak tree, she slipped on a limb and landed next to me, out came the sun and dried up all the rain, so the itsy bitsy spider, went right back up again.

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up without a stop, she spun a silky web right at the very top, she wove and spun and when her web was done, the itsy bitsy spider, rested in the sun.

well I''m glad this song is positive.

I thought it was going to be as bad as "Ring around the rosy"

The spider went up the water spout either just before it rained or while it was raining and got washed out of the spout. The story implies that he waited until the sun came out and dried up all the rain before he went back into the water spout.

The moral of the story: Assess the situation, watch for your best opportunity and seize it.

Ahhh... see that changes everything. With preserverance and intellegence and bravery... sweet success is your reward.

They should teach the whole version. Now, I like ths story. Thank you!

I thought the moral of the story was that water doesn''t kill spiders.... you gotta use your shoe.

As a character on Scrubs said, "Also, I hate spiders, so if you see one, I want you to kill it. Kill it dead! Don''t try and put it in a cup and take it outside... it''ll just find a way back in! Okay? They''re sneaky!"

Gypsy -- just curious, what made you think of the Itsy Bitsy Spider? I never knew there was another part! The thing I have trouble with isn''t the song but it''s making the hand motions for the spider correctly.

In the UK we have ''Incy Wincy Spider''...

I like spiders, a lot, they eat flies and mosquitos, I encourage them in my house and would NEVER kill one - we don''t have poisonous ones here I will admit. My husband had a pet tarantula as a kid.

My Ipod was randomly loaded with some old music. Carly Simon''s Coming Around Again, and it was a concert version with a children''s choir, so the children sang Itsy Bitsy Spider at the end of it. Because of the message of "Coming Around Again"... I put two and two together and realized that I had been wrong about the moral of the spider story.
