I think the older photos are just sort of low-res ....

I count 14 prongs to the sapphire on both of them

I'm pretty sure it was re-set at some point.

ETA: I could have sworn I read somewhere that it had been reset, but I googled it and couldn't come up with anything so maybe I'm wrong.

Didn't Diana have it altered after the proposal?

Just read this in the thread about the ring in Around the World:

Of course i have been seeing a lot of talk about this ring that kate is now wearing being the same ring that Diana was engaged in, of course, this is not exactly true. The ring that Diana was engaged with was from garrard's but, it was remade within the first year that Diana wore it. One would speculate that it was done because of the royals dismay that the ring was directly out of the garrards christmas catalogue of 1981 and so, anyone could have purchased it. To have it remade, made it unique. So, the ring Diana wore and the one Kate now wears probably bare the same sapphire, but are two different settings.

Yes this is the ring! Repair or not this is the one!

I would say that means it IS the same ring that Diana wore, though the one she wore is not the one she was originally presented with.

No you're not wrong.

I must have a warped memory....
I thought Diana's sapphire was set into a yellow gold setting.

And now is in a white gold (or metal) setting...

I am getting old!

With such provenance what might such a ring sell for at Sotheby's?

No, the prong placement is different on the two rings AS LINKED. Diana's clearly doesn't have prongs between each round IN THE PICTURES POSTED. Each round has only 3 prongs each. Kate's has more prongs. It has the main three and then an additional shared prong in between each diamond. When this change occurred I don't know. But there is a change. I prefer the one with fewer prongs but suspect they weren't sufficient to secure the stones adequately so the shared prongs were added to the setting.

1. Diana was listed in a BBC survey as the 3rd most admired person in British history out of 100 people who made the list.

2. This is the piece most closely associated with Diana.

Easily well over its worth without the provenance. $1 million, maybe? Just a wild guess, but I'd say it would be a lot.

About the size (or rather weight) of the sapphire. I just wanted to point out that sapphires weigh more than diamonds for their size. I forget exactly how much more it is, but if you are used to estimating that a diamondis a certain amount of carats, because of the size, you can't use this same technique for sapphires. A one-carat sapphire is way smaller than a one-carat diamond, and so on up. I am just saying this because the question arose of whether the sapphire is 18 carats or not (besides being set in 18 Karat gold). I believe it could be an 18 carat sapphire and look like a 12 carat diamond.
