Is it just me or is the dark scary?

Until just recently I thought everyone was afraid of the dark, but were playing it cool to not be embarrassed. I am an adult and I can honestly say that I am still afraid of the dark. If I am home alone there has to be a light on at each corner of the house so there are no scary darknesses lurking to get me.

Please chime in.

Are you scared of the dark?

Scared of the dark, but pretend that you are not?

Are you a grown up and gave up being scared of the dark when you learned about Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy?

Definitely scared of the dark and not afraid to admit it! When FI goes away on business I sleep with a light on!

ME! I''m afraid of the dark! I live alone and most nights I leave all the downstairs lights on when I go to bed so that I don''t have to go up the stairs in the dark, and so that it''s light down there when I wake up. Somehow i''ve convinced myself that nothing can get me when i''m in a lighted room with the tv going.

I sleep with a light on when FI''s away too. Usually out in the hall on the futon with the cats for company.

I sleep with the TV on. Yes, I''m still afraid of the dark. When DH isn''t gone it''s not much of an issue, but I must have the TV on. I like background noise and light. Radio just won''t do.

I grew up like that. My mom was like that and still sleeps with the TV on.

Aww.

I''ve never been scared of the dark. Add to that a healthy dose of night blindness (from age), and well even if there was something there it''s not likely I''d see it. I do have nights when I get spooked, rarely, but usually just retreating to my room is the cure for that. Plus a chihuahua power bed warmer does help, is economical to feed and doesn''t take up much space!

I am completely afraid of the dark. When I have to turn out the lights in the house or go to the bathroom at night in the dark, I litrally run to my bed, which for some reason is "safe".

There are monsters and especially ghost creatures like the ones in the Ring lurking in the dark

The Ring used to be a favorite scary movie of mine. Now it just scares the hell out of me.

Another fraidy cat here too. I have a dim lamp on all night in the living room and the light over the kitchen sink on too. I used to just leave the tv on all night..but then we watched the Ring..and there were too many nights of having to get up to go to the bathroom and launching my 8 months pregnant body over my husband b/c I was too scared to walk all the way around the bed. I still feel the closet door every time I walk by to make sure it''s shut. JD spent over a year on overnights and oooooh boy did that SUUUUUUCK.

Hahaha. When Hubby is on call I have to leave a light on downstairs too. We have quite a few night lights but those are for the "babies."

Not scared of dark but can be jumpy if just watched a scary movie in dark and light!

Might also be reluctant to get out of my tent to pee in middle of night when camping..but that is because I am camping in bear country and don''t want to get caught with my pants down! I love being in woods/outdoors at night in general (used to do multi-day bike and adventure racing, was in military etc so have spent a lot of time in outdoors at night!).

Count me in as well. I am such a wuss!

I''m not afraid of the dark exactly, but when DH works overnights I like the leave the light on dimly in the living room so it feels like he''s still there.

I''m totally scared of the dark. But my excuse for leaving the hall light on is that if my daughter wakes up I won''t break my toe trying to get into her room.

That''s my wussy excuse and I''m stickin to it!

nope, not scare of the dark now, used to when I was a kid, under 5, I guess.

Now I like the dark, do night solo hiking, pass through some graveyards, etc.

I do the "safe" bed thing too! Sometimes in the middle of the night when I get up to pee I swear there is something there in the dark ready to pounce.

One night DH was home as usual and he shoved me. He was standing over me on my side of the bed. I was so scared. I thought for sure that the paranormal activity creature had gotten in my husband and he was possesed. He muttered something that wasnt english and went to his side of the bed and laid down. It took me a long time to get back to sleep that night.

Its funny because I am not afraid of a burglar or something like that I am afraid of ghosts and creepy undead stuff.

No, I''m actually not afraid of the dark. I don''t have nightlights, nor do I keep lights on in the house, even if I''m alone.

So, technically, I''m the weirdo, not you guys!

I love the dark! I know, big suprise coming from me. I grew up in a big, older house that we are pretty sure has a ghost, so hearing odd sounds in the dark never freaked me out. At home now, if there is any light after my husband has gone to bed, it''s candles.

Once years ago after some pretty violent thunderstorms, the power went out while a couple of friends of mine were out. Streetlights included. I was parked near Mount Auburn cemetary (if you know Boston/Cambridge) and my friends were too afraid to walk by it to get back to the car. I had to go get it and drive back to pick them up.

I''m fine with walking into dark rooms and finding something, since my night vision is still pretty good.

I''m terrified of the dark. I sleep with a light on as well when SO is gone. I also make sure the dogs are in bed with me when he isn''t there.

I''m scared of the dark, but totally intrigued with the morbid side of life. Actually, the apartment my husband and I are looking at overlooks Colebrook Cemetery in Whitman. It may be a bit creepy at first, but I actually like knowing cops will be patrolling the area!

I was fascinated with the morbid side of things while a child and a teen. Things that would scare most kids I was interested in. I saw horror movies at say 6-7 years old that I probably shouldn''t have seen but didn''t have lasting, terrifying affects on me. So now, the dark and creepy are a few of my favorite things!

It''s funny, after I wrote the first post. I started humming "Fear Of The Dark" by Iron Maiden.

Very afraid of the dark, secondary to the girl from ''The Ring'' and the crazy people from Rob Zombies'' movies all lurking in the dark in my house at night.

I''m afraid of the dark. Always have been. I''m a little more brave now because DD is too young to defend herself from closet monsters. Once she''s walking, she''s on her own

Joking aside, when I travel I always leave a light on. If FI is out and I know he won''t be home until late I either try to stay up and wait for him or I fall asleep with the TV on.

This made me giggle

My little cousin (he''s 14 now, not so little) has been "protecting" me from spiders since he was about four. He would go into a room and check the corners, and pronounce it either safe or not - and I''m just so terrified of spiders, I was always well past the point of blushing though pretty much everyone else couldn''t stop laughing! He still checks rooms for me

I used to be terrified of the dark! The terror went away when I got my glasses at 8 yrs old. My vision was so bad, everything looked weird anyway, especially in the dark. When I could finally see, I was completely fine. In fact, if the moon is too bright, I have to use dark curtains to block out the light so I can sleep. We leave a nightlight on in the hall bathroom for JT at night, and it took me months to be able to sleep with it on, barely shining into our room.

I''m scared of the dark and I hate being home alone at night. It terrifies me. I''m not afraid of ghosts/undead things, I''m scared someone would break in and attack me.

It''s terrifying!

A couple weeks ago, I was working late with most of our team and they building shut off the lights. I freaked out but told myself it would be okay as long as I am close to my computer screen light and knowing my co-workers were next to me in their office and cubes.

But then I turn around at the exact moment my boss decided to pop his head in and I started screaming bloody murder. It was very funny to my co-workers since my entire team is men but at that time I was in tears trying to choke back my sobs and explain that I am totally afraid of the dark.

Same here, and multiplied by 1000 when I am walking home by myself in the dark.

I''m only scared of the dark if I''m home at night alone. Also, this doesn''t apply anymore because my husband''s usually with me, but I HATE coming home to a completely dark house. It freaks me out.
