Okay...so we are owners of an iPad. What do I do with the thing? For some reason I keep thinking of an etch-i-sketch or whatever.

Questions: Is it voice activated? Do I shake it when it doesn't respond to me? What about all the fingerprints on the screen? What if my cat decides to sleep on it? Can I watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on it? Will it make dinner for me?

DH is bringing it home tonight...

I admit, I don't even know what it is. When we went into the apple store, DH logged onto PS for me so I would be able to relate it to daily life. Still when I would turn it from horizontal to vertical, it wouldn't respond to me!

Bring it to Starbucks.
Order a Vente double decaf latte.

Sit in the corner for hours staring at your iPad with a lost and ironic look on your face and pretend you are the only person in the world, and you are writing a play that is above everyone's head.
You'll be the envy of all.

Seriously, I'm with you.
I've heard no good arguments fro why I need one if I have a laptop already - besides looking cool.

The iPad great, read the instructions and you'll be fine.

Nice. I will head to Starbucks first thing tomorrow. Plan is: bring some of my husband's physics books, pretend I'm highly advanced, but will be watching season 5 of Buffy! hahaha

Italia - there are instructions to read? Ugh! Hopefully they're like the iPod ones. Technology isn't for me. One time I accidently uninstalled all the drivers from our computer...hahaha

It's a very large iphone you can't make calls from.

:halo:

It came with just a couple slips of paper and two stickers.

I use ours to read the paper on Sunday.

Or to check in on PS when watching TV. My laptop is hooked to a big monitor so that I can see it better, so it's a pain to use as an actual laptop.

I like the zoom in feature on the iPad, too. I can see things better, which is great.

i do find the "correcting spelling" feature on Google to be incredibly annoying, though.

I'm a huge apple fan, I've been using their stuff since the 1980's. Hence the "iLander".

Plus, it's cool as heck. Isn't that enough?

It does have a drawback, though. I go to the grocery store and lots of other places with screen displays and I can't figure out why they're not touch screens. I really annoy the cashiers as I try to make the display bigger, or "scroll up".

I'm currently checking ps from my iPad in front of the tv.

I didn't think I would like it. Now I love it. And I kick ass on Bejewled Blitz on it.

I don't see the point in one for myself, but I definitely see that you can make it whatever you want it to be and quickly become addicted to it. I love the surf the net so I can imagine it would be handy to just have around so I can hop on the sofa, veg and surf the net.

But since I have an android phone, I don't really have a need for one. But if someone gave it to me, I'm sure I'd have needs really quick!

I'm not an apple fan for many reasons (although I'd take a hard look again at the iPad vs an android tablet if I ever got one of those things), but there is no doubt in my mind that Apple so far has been untouchable when creating elegant, easy to use products. And what I like about them is they take risks and seem very innovative.

Have fun with it MC, and report back to us how you like it!

I like it for netflix and general web browsing. Ps works great on it.

I'm a little surprised someone would by one this late in the cycle. There should be a new one out about march or so :saint:

Quite honestly, if you can hold out for a few more months I'd wait for the new one.

I got my iPad on Saturday for my birthday, I didn't want to wait another 3-4 months for the next one, even though it will probably be better. (But then maybe not.. iphone4?)

I am loving it so far but have not found any use for it other than what has already been listed. It makes typing on the iPhone seem really hard though!

I think I may download some books to read on the train, I get car sick from small text so being able to enlarge the font as I please is a bonus.

Can you upload photos to PS on the iPad?

I hear it's great for playing Angry Birds! :wink2:

Lol! I actually prefer to play angry birds on my iPhone than the iPad... There is less room for error on the small screen! :D

DH uses his to read the Wall Street Journal, watch tv on hulu and obsessively check his law school blog. Last night we bought the scrabble app and had a lot of fun with that.

I don't need one. I have an iphone, and a laptop. Seriously. My laptop is perfectly transportable if I'm so desperate to watch a movie that I just NEED to take the thing with me. My iphone does EVERYTHING. I think if I attached a brush it'd brush my teeth for me. It has my grocery list, notes, calendar, workouts, a personal trainer (Jillian Michaels yells at me every day), twitter, fb, fertility chart/period calendar, photos, camera, zoom lens, photoshop, youtube, imdb, fandango, netflix, calculator, I bet I could find a graphing calculator app, weather, stocks, calorie counter, pedometer, starbucks tracker, maps, google earth, recipes, financial guidance, email, espn, news, games, sleepmaker, translator, itunes, drink mixes, ghost stories, gps, police radio, the bible, mosquito repeller (LOL), planets, groupon, a barcode scanner, a guide to pet friendly places, mathematical formulas, a periodic table of elements, yoga, the kama sutra, daily deals, a spanish tutor, texts from last night, a guide to modern guns, quotations, a radio, WHAT ELSE COULD I NEED?

(besides food, horses, animals, friends and family.... oh wait... I can text them)

P.S. - The ipad will have all of that minus texting. BUT I THINK you can still get things like kik which are IM programs.

Okay, so I totally want one. A friend of mine has one and it's so cool! I told DH last night that we need one for our trip this spring so that we don't have to drag the laptop.

Bean - Last night we tried to get Netflix to work on it, but it wouldn't :( sigh! Oh, and it was a gift. (DH's mom bought it for us yesterday!) Dh and I had been contemplating getting one w/our tax return $ and told her and she went to the apple store and bought us one. (I wonder what would happen if I get DH to tell her we're also have been contemplating buying diamond bezel studs with the $. lol)

So the one we have will be outdated in a few months? Ugh.

Yeah, okay. Just asked dh and he said he would have to look at the specs. Luckily his mom gave us the receipt.

Okay, the GPS part creeps me out. DH clicked around on the screen and low-and-behold, there was a satelite view of where we currently were (well, almost...one street off) and I ran away to the kitchen to hide. Ugh. Dh left a note next to it this morning telling me how to turn it on (lol), but I made a point to be gone all day so I haven't touched it. lol!

The only issue I have with Apple is the products are so delicate. Everything needs something additional to armor it up. Both my kids were given ipod classics and I cringe as they walk with them in their hands. We have to get those cover thingies. iPad is the same. So vunerable!

I will report back after I get over being paranoid. I just finished a book called The Traveler and characters spend the entire story running from people who are spying on them and tracking their movements. hahaha

DH and I both have an iPad, and we both love ours. He loves its light weight and convenience, so much that he doesn't even take his laptop to work any more because he can do almost everything on the iPad. He browses the web on it, whereas I still prefer to do that on my laptop unless it's more convenient to use my iPad. He keeps documents and files on it (more accurately, they're "in the cloud" but he accesses them from the iPad) but I still find it easier to access my files on my laptop. (I'm a little slower at getting used to new things, I guess!) I use my iPad a ton for reading (Kindle app, which I like better than iBooks), playing games (Words With Friends, Angry Birds, and various solitaire games are my current favorites), email and internet when I'm away from my laptop, and watching Netflix. I love its long battery life and light weight, and the touch screen is so easy to use.

Happy Birthday Hawaiianorangetree!

I'll let you know about the uploading of photos when I figure that out. DH said something about synching it w/your pc. Something I often do is take a photo w/my phone, send it to my hotmail and then save on my hard drive. lol

 Yeah, that's what I figured. It's a cool gadget but I can't buy into the hype yet. Heck, I don't have an iAnything yet.

I destroyed my 9-year old niece in Rock Band on the iPad.

That was AWESOME.

Perhaps it helped me that she had never actually heard Pat Benatar's Heartbreaker?

MC- what happened when you tried to use netflix? Maybe I can help?

The only reason I brought up waiting is because I've had it happen to me before with apple products where I buy something (ex. my 24" imac) and less than 2 months later a 27" imac came out for the same price!! ugh! Drives me nuts. I have found that Apple really cycles their products MUCH quicker than any other company.

This link: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ has a list of Apple products past and present and when they went on sale. iPad isn't up yet, but I'm sure it will be soon! Anyway the link shows which products are up for renewal soon. I know your boys just got iPod classics, and according to this site it's "don't buy" season. However with classics they usually stay about the same but you get more memory for cheaper- so I wouldn't worry about those being outdated at all. It's the iPod nano's and iPhones which get cycled quite quickly! Even the laptops.

OK but you already opened the ipad- I think there is a 10% restocking fee so I don't know that I would bring it back. It's rumored that iPad 2 will have at least 1 camera (front facing? back facing?) This feature is desired for some apps and I'm sure bring able to "face chat". Also, I've read that the screen should be a bit higher resolution- not necessarily iPhone 4 retina, but better than what is on the iPad now. I know the case and shape is supposed to change a bit (be flatter on the back, a tad more square sides) but we will see! I suspect that iPad 2 will be the much asked for improvements and iPad 3 will be newer, bigger than ever features- so you could always update in 2011 or later!

And one game I really recommend on the iPad is Plantz vs Zombies. It's $10 for that version but it's larger and SOOO addicting!! My husband and I have played it quite a bit.

If there is a way, I have not figured it out. The problem is that when you try to upload there is no HD to search, or desktop...

Oh and I also recommend the shutterfly app for iphone/ ipad if you guys use that. It makes uploading the pictures pretty easy.

Thanks Bean... Last night my DH said that we'll just keep it and if we absolutely must have the newer one when it comes out, we can sell the one we just got and then put that $ toward an upgrade.

Okay, for the Netflix:

After I click on the Netflix icon, it takes me to the Netflix screen and when I click on a show to instantly watch, it'll say it's "preparing," while showing a photo of the show, but then it quickly defaults back to the screen which I was at before which provides the option to click watch instantly.

Bean, I didn't even realize there isn't a HD until last night. What a strange device. lol! I just clicked "photos," and it says that "you can sync photos and videos onto your ipad using itunes." Have you tried this? I'll check out Shutterfly. We use Picasa for photos on our main computer.
