Invisalign

So lately I''ve been seriously considering Invisalign. I had braces as a kid but didn''t wear the retainer enough and then eventually wisdom teeth shifted my upper teeth to the point where my retainer wouldn''t fit anymore. One of my front top teeth is slightly in front of the other front top tooth... and it really *really* bothers me. I hate taking pictures, I don''t like smiling, and I''m constantly self-conscious about it. I figured there was nothing I could do about it because I had no interest in wearing metal braces again (I know some people do... but I just really don''t want to). So the last few days I''ve been doing some research on Invisalign and I wanted to know if anyone on PS has personal experience with this. Has anyone done Invisalign and been happy with the results? How long did it take from start to finish? I would only want to do the top teeth because the bottom ones have a permanent metal wire "retainer" behind them so luckily they never shifted.

Another problem is I have TMJ and wear a nightguard to prevent teeth clenching/grinding and it has really helped me with my chronic headaches. If I did Invisalign I would have to stop wearing the nightguard... and I wonder if I would be able to wear it even once I finished treatment (because if I go through this whole process I certainly want to be able to wear my retainer at the end of it!)

I made an appointment for a free consultation with an orthodontist for next week. I''m so torn on what to do. DH says right now it''s not that noticeable and he didn''t even notice it so much until I pointed it out - like I said - it''s not *that* bad or noticeable. But this has bothered me for years (and even in my wedding pictures I can''t stand looking at some of them because my top teeth bother me so much) and I know if I don''t fix it, it will always bother me. But is it worth the price? Will it really work? I don''t know what to do.

So I guess I''m just asking if anyone has experience with this or any advice. Thanks so much!

I had Invisalign and am very pleased with the results. I also had a fantastic ortho who had a lot of experience with Invisalign. If you go ahead with it make sure you pick someone who has been using Invisalign for several years and works with adult patients. I am guessing you will need to have tops and bottoms, though, even if your lower teeth are straight. Your new bite will be different than your old one. But you probably won't need as many aligners on the bottom. If you don't fix your teeth now they will continue to shift. Mine were acceptable at 20--annoying by 40--and really horrible by 50.

My process took about 2+ years but my bottom teeth were very crowded and I had one stubborn tooth that wouldn't move. While you are going through the process the aligners are close to invisible and taken off to eat and clean so that as you go through the process you don't feel embarrassed by noticeable mouth hardware.

I love my teeth now. I don't chew the inside of my cheek anymore either!

Then I would say you're a good candidate. My former dentist wore Invisaligns and loved them. I was not able to go that route due to some other issues and I wore clear braces for 18 months instead. I now have retainers that are very similar to Invisalign. They're awesome because they double as bleaching trays now. I haven't heard anything too negative about Invisalign, only that it is pretty expensive in relation to traditional braces.

ETA: also, don't feel bad because others do not think your teeth should bother you. Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you and if you feel like it's not perfect and that bothers you then don't feel guilty for wanting improve it. I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful it was for me to have a straight, beautiful smile after years of having an imperfect one. Everyone used to tell me the same things when I mentioned that I hated that my teeth were crooked--that it wasn't noticeable, etc. I think that is one of those little white lies people tell you to avoid hurting your feelings.

Thanks so much for the information - I''ll have to talk to the orthodontist about just top vs. both top and bottom aligners.

I really don''t want to do have to do both so I hope he says I won''t need to. It''s really just that one tooth on the top that bothers me (the rest are all straight) but I know my original orthodontist did a bad job in the first place and I have a slight crossbite (my dentist tells me it''s there - it''s hardly noticeable unless I really look inside my mouth). I''ll have to talk to him about all of it.

Did you have to have attachments on your teeth? From the pictures I''ve seen, they look like tooth-colored brackets on the outside of your teeth. I had no idea this was even done with Invisalign and I feel like it almost defeats the purpose somewhat. If it were just the aligners that I would have to wear it would be one thing - but those brackets seem like they would be a lot more noticeable. Did you have to have those? Did it bother you?

I feel so stupid for not wearing my retainer after my first time with braces. I could have avoided this altogether. And I''m so embarrassed to even mention that I''m considering this to my parents after all the money they spent on my braces the first time around (just to clarify - they would NOT be paying for these - DH and I would pay for it if I go through with it... I just feel so guilty because it''s my fault the money was "wasted" to begin with). As for the cost of Invisalign vs. traditional braces, I hope to find out how much it will be at my consultation next week. Insurance will cover half the cost (up to $2500) according to my husband who called them today. The cost is really what is causing me to hesitate because I hate spending unnecessary money, but my husband says if this is something that truly bothers me every single day then it''s worth it to spend the money for me to be happy with my teeth and smile and no longer be self-conscious anymore.

Don''t beat yourself up too much, Lilac. What''s done is done, and you can''t go back and change the retainer-wearing habits of your old self now. I think a lot of kids did that, I know my brother did and his teeth really shifted as well.

There is a website called archwired.com that has a ton of information about adults and braces, and there is an entire subforum devoted to Invisalign, you should check it out.

Have you considered veneers? Depending on what your needs really are, they might be an alternative to invisalign. I went in for an invisalign consult and decided that veneers would be a better choice for what I saw my flaws were.

I had a friend in college with Invisalign and he loved it! Until his doctor told him (our senior year) that it wasn''t working well and he had to get regular metal braces for a while

He was not pleased!

But if they work for you (hopefully your doctor would know this right away, instead of wasting years of your time like my friend''s doc did) I''ve heard they''re great.

I believe you only wear them for part of the day? Someone correct me on that. So you may be able to wear your regular mouthguard with them. Or there might be other types of mouthguards you could wear. I have one for grinding my teeth that would work with invisalign, though I''m not sure what type you need exactly for TMJ.

If it''s bothering you, I think it''s absolutely worth talking to a doctor to see if you''re a candidate! I''ve had horrible teeth and I know how embarrassing it is.

elrohwen - I think you have to wear them for almost the entire day (like 20 or 22 hours) and my nightguard isn''t the type of thing I could wear with Invisalign - so if I decided to go ahead with this I guess I would have to discuss it with my regular dentist also and figure out if there''s an alternative that could help with the TMJ. Yes, I had the little "buttons" on my teeth but only on the teeth that needed major movement. They are attachment points so the aligner has something to hold on to. In my case I had a few teeth that had to be rotated so they needed some force.

A good orthodontist would try to correct a crossbite as it''s not ideal and puts extra wear on the teeth. I don''t think you''ll save much money only doing the tops because the cost is in the evaluation, treatment plan, x-rays and office visits. But you will find out with your consultation what''s possible.

And don''t feel guilty about not wearing your retainer. If you''ve had TMJ it''s possible your retainers made your jaw uncomfortable and that''s why you didn''t wear them.

I just finished invisalign last month and is uber happy with my smile! The whole process took me 1 year since most of my problems were just at 4 top front teeth. I wear retainers now but I choose the metal ones vs the newer plastic retainers since I think the plastic retainers might break down faster (I think I grind at night a bit). Everything that swinggirl has said is true. I will say that although your bottom is fine I would get it done at the same time. I had a perfect bottom and still got it done so that my bite was aligned properly. Plus it was just an extra $1000 to do the bottom so I was like what the heck is another $1000! It is REALLY hard at times to average 22hrs of wear on the invisalign but well worth adjusting your eating habits for a better smile! Oh, I also financed it too since I was able to space out the payments over the period of my treatment plan with 0% financing I tell my mom that some folks buy a car out of univ while I decided to finance nice teeth

I was considering Invisalign. My teeth aren''t all that crooked but i broke my front two about 12 years ago and have caps on them, which need replacing every 18 months or so. That gets tiresome, and also they always yellow really quickly and can''t be whitened. So before getting permanent crowns it was recommended that I get my teeth straightened to sort out the overcrowding. But it turns out I can get braces for only 6 months, the clear ones, and they''re cheaper so I''m going with them instead. I get them on Wednesday

Definitely like the sound of Invisalign! But I''m too impatient and they wouldn''t be totally suitable with the caps I have.

I hope they work out well for you Lilac! I think it is worth it.

on a sparkly or holiday instead is veerryy strong!!

I'm pretty sure mine would be considered minor crowding - I hope I'm a ok candidate for invasalign..


Porridge, your Aussie right if I'm not mistaken? Would you mind to give an example of what was the cost difference between the invasalign treatment and the clear braces you ended up going with? Also, are they the ceramic ones you're getting?

I couldn''t do invisalin at first I was really upset but I got over it I have the clear white braces on top and metal on the bottom and really you can''t notice them I will be 30 in Feb and have been wearing them for 2 years and they really aren''t that bad.

I had to have teeth removed and once I am finshed I will get my teeth whitened so all up it is about 10k however it the best money I have ever spent all my teeth issues are fixing and the smile I will have when it is done will be amazing

AJ invisalin is about 20% more I believe , also most orthos do payment plans mine was 2k down and 50 dollars a week .

It really was a great experience. The consultation was extremely informative and six weeks later my trays were in and I was ready to go. The best part was they can show you a progression and your final results on a simulation. It''s really neat! I was definitely surprised by how TIGHT the trays on when you first put them in and there''s definitely a little pain and discomfort at first when you take them in and out. Motrin was my best friend!

I also had a really great side effect...I lost 10 pounds! It''s a pain to take them in and out to eat so I pretty much ate at meals. I handful of M&Ms or a coke totally weren''t worth taking out the trays, eating, brushing then putting the trays back in.

One last thing, the speed with which your finished will totally depend on you. You really should wear your trays ALL the time...at least 21 hours a day. A lot people who drink coffee and tea or other drinks that you tend to sip have their trays out for way longer than they think and that definitely slows your progress.

I''m really looking forward to my consultation on Tuesday, I just hope he doesn''t tell me it wouldn''t work for me! I really think if he tells me it would work for me I would go ahead and do it. As much as I hate the thought of having to wear anything constantly in my mouth for a year or two, just knowing that at the end I could end up with perfect teeth really makes me excited! DH doesn''t care either way and just wants me to do whatever will make me happy (he says he doesn''t notice the tooth that bothers me and how it "crowds" in front of the tooth next to it, but I seem to fixate on it and it really bothers me multiple times a day every single day). I guess I''ll see on Tuesday. I hope the pain won''t be too bad - I''m allergic to Motrin/Advil/aspirin, etc. Hopefully I can handle it if I decide to go ahead with this. I remember how bad braces were the first time and how utterly painful they were each time they were tightened and I hope it''s not as bad as that was!

AJ no I''m Irish! If it''s any help the 6 months are about €1,500 and the Invisalign were somewhere between €2,000 and €2,500 I think! It is the ceramic ones I''m getting. The crowns are costing me about €800 I think. Definitely go for it if it bothers you, it will be worth it!

I have horrible TMJ as well, and really crowded bottom teeth. (We couldn''t afford to do bottom braces on me as a kid.) I decided to do Invisalign when my TMJ started driving me really crazy, although I have wanted to do it for asthetic reasons for quite some time. The orthodontist thought that they make my TMJ better, as they can help my bite to align.

So I started them a few months ago. My teeth are noticably better. I am not well-disciplined at wearing them during the day. But the orthodontist said that I just have to do 300 hours per tray. So, I''ve pretty much decided to just wear them at night and take 2x as long for the process. It''s much easier for me this way, even if it takes a really long time.

Regarding the clinching/grinding at night: I still do it and needed some sort of night guard. I got a generic one at Target called SleepRight. It''s no-boil and doesn''t need to be fitted, which is good since my bite is constantly changing. It doesn''t need to fit around the Invisalign and still keeps me from clinching.

Good luck with your decision! I am anxious to hear what you decide to do!

I finished my invisalign today!!

After nearly two years of what was only supposed to be 10 months (bottom teeth refused to budge for a while) i saw my dentist today and she has given the all clear to order my retainers.
They have definately been worth it. Definately. Mine were not much more in price than the normal braces and i am so glad that i have done it! My teeth look fantastic if i do say so myself!

I am going back next week to have the bottom ones shaved a little so they are not so uneven on the top and i am doing some home whitening and i am having a small false piece replaced as well so my teeth will be stunning for my wedding in 2 months.

For anyone who is not happy with their smile and are considering it, i say, go for it!! I had traditional braces as a teenager and i remember the pain being unbearable. With Invisalign there was none of that at all. You could hardly notice them when they were in and if we had something special on, i would leave them at home.

It has been a long process but well worth it.

AJ, can i just say that it is a really good idea to phone around and get a few quotes.. i had so many different prices given to me, some as high as $10 000.

So I went to my first consultation this morning. The doctor seemed nice enough, but then he told me the price - $6600 and it will take between 12 and 15 months. I felt my heart sink to the floor when he said that and I almost started crying. It''s just way too much money and longer than I had anticipated. The price was really what threw me off (because I just really did not expect him to say that high a number!) I left the office in tears and didn''t realize just how badly I wanted to do this until he told me it was too much for DH and I to afford right now.

Then I got a call from another orthodontist who I had set up an appointment with for Thursday. She had been highly recommended to me by a friend who just got Invisalign last week (and who had gotten her original braces at this doctor years ago). They had an opening today and I could come in. So I went. I LOVED the doctor - she was so sweet and really understanding about all of it. She says she thinks I''m a good candidate for Invisalign Express and she''ll give me a discount because I was referred by a patient that she loves

. She told me it will cost $3300 and I should be done after about 5 months. Insurance will hopefully cover half of that, and if I pay in cash she might even give me a further discount. I have to go back in 2 weeks for x-rays, impressions, and she will let me know for sure if Invisalign Express will work for me. I''m *REALLY* hoping she says it will because 5 months and $3300 is even BETTER than I could have hoped for! And she was just the sweetest person and totally understanding about me not wanting metal braces and me wanting to fix this tooth as quickly as possible. I''m really hoping this works out... I guess I''ll know in 2 weeks.

That''s so exciting! And only 5 months for the braces - that''s pretty quick!

Invisalign is definitely more expensive (both orthodontists told me yesterday that I could get regular braces for much cheaper, but I just really don''t want to go through that again). That''s really annoying that you can''t eat certain things though - I never thought about that with clear braces, but I guess it''s similar to the Invisalign in that any colored foods with stain them! The difference is with Invisalign you can take them out to be able to eat things, but with the braces you can''t (but the Invisalign is more expensive and possibly takes longer... so it''s a tradeoff).

I started Invisalign!!!

I got my trays around two weeks ago and I''m switching to my second set of aligners tonight. I''m SO happy I went through with this. I haven''t seen any change yet (but I don''t think I''ll notice anything for a couple weeks) but the treatment is supposed to take 5-6 months in total. Possibly a little longer if I need any adjustments/refinements after my initial 11 upper/12 lower aligners, but hopefully not much longer than that! I decided in the end to do both top and bottom teeth because my orthodontist said it was the same price either way and it might help my TMJ to correct my bite. The aligners are a little uncomfortable the first 2 or 3 days but then I hardly notice them.
