Inherited 7.50 ct Pear Shape

I recently inherited a diamond from my mother. It was evaluated by my local jeweler as a 7.50 carat pear shape diamond that has a color of K and a clarity of SI2, but has no certificate.
My mother wore the diamond for over 20 years in a ring of hers.

If I were to sell this diamond to a local jeweler what would be a fair dealer price??




Any input is much appreciated...

Have it appraised and go from there - there is no way for anyone here to be able to tell you a fair price.

Ahem, though I'll up that $50 offer and give you a solid $100...yes?

And - you will never get anything near what it's actual value is, be prepared for that. You have absolutely no use for it?

She is right though.. It all depends on the condition of the diamond, the cut.. (color, clarity- which could be lower or higher since it sounds like you were only given a verbal estimate, which can be worth squat sometimes!)

Heck yes, it''d still be 3x the size of my stone!
 
I''d start by sending it to GIA to get a proper cert. It will be easier to sell. Then get it properly appraised for value.

It depends on what you define as actual value. Retail? No way. However, you can get a fair value, considering that you will be selling to the trade (not the consumer) and where in the distribution chain you are fitting in (aka, not the final seller).
 
If the weight, color and clarity are accurate would a $29,000 offer be reasonable. I can get a second opinion on the grade or send it to the GIA but I''d like to know what it is worth, and whether the offer is fair.
 
maybe try doing some searches for similar stone on online vendor sites to get an idea.

just a quick search showed me this:james allen

color is an F though, so that bumps price up.

with this size of a stone you REALLY should have it appraised so you don''t get taken - it could save you thousands of dollars. people will not hesitate to take you for a ride if you do not fully educate yourself about it''s worth and the only way to do that is have it independently appraised - and you should have it certified too.
 
You''re setting yourself up to be taken to the cleaners if you don''t invest some time and money getting this stone appraised. You might want to check out the Pricescope home page, FAQ, and Rocky Talky for more information. You might be able to get a free on-line guestimate out of someone, but it will be worth about what you paid for it.

I think you need to start by doing a little soul searching. This is a family heirloom stone, that your mother wore for over 20 years. How do you think she is going to feel if you sell it, or would have felt if that be the case. Would you feel comfortable if sometime down the road, there were another female in the family (perhaps a niece, perhaps a cousin, perhaps your own fiance or wife) who might have inherited it and carried it through the family? I think those are some things that you need to take into serious consideration.

That being said, you really should take it to an independent appraiser and have them appraise it and give a value, and then go from there.
 
Forgot to add:

NO, I don't believe $29k would be a fair offer 7.5ct pear!! If the stone is indeed a well cut one. Did the person that made that offer see the stone? Can you post any pictures of the stone? Clear pictures, blurry ones are pointless.
 
While you will never get what a diamond could be bought "new at retail", I would say $30,000 is low.

I suggest, as others have said, doing some research and getting a GIA certificate for that baby before making any decisions. Well worth the cost!
 
Send it to GIA.
You can do this as a private individual.
You do not need to involve any professional.

You have to be sure of the specs to be sure of the value, especially with such a large stone.

A GIA report is much better than an appraisal from any appraiser, even one with GIA credentials.

If this stone goes for $130,000, then yes, I'd say that a $29,000 offer is a touch low.

Get educated, get the stone certed and appraised so you can get a fair price for it if that's what you want to do... though you seriously have NO use for it?
 
If the stone was in the price range of $130k (big if) I would expect to pay closer to $75k-$95k depending on the cut. I don''t think there are a ton of stones cut in that size, weight, color..... Which is why I would pay a bit more than resell value. But thats as a personal buyer and not being a store. I dunno.

And no I don''t have $95k so it''s not an offer

You won''t regret sending it to them. Regardless of what you decide from there this is an important thing to do.

I do want to add that I agree with the posters above who urge you to think about it long and hard before you sell this stone that your mother wore. Once you sell it, it is gone. Even if you could find it again it wouldn''t just be a matter of handing a check for the same amount to them.
My grandmother had some beautiful diamonds and I wish I had even just one of her rings. She has been gone for 6 years now and I''m getting married next summer. It would mean the world to be to be able to wear one of her diamonds.

Obviously we don''t know the full story of this diamond or how it came to you. Only you know that. But please think about what you (or your kids/grandkids/nieces/wife) will be feeling in 5, 10, 20 years from now.

buys this from you, they would certainly expect the cert to show what your stone is... It's a good thing to have...

Dont be shocked that the appraisal fee wont be cheap...and make sure that the stone is insured, and properly wrapped to be mailed!!!!
