I have three boys and find myself buying a great deal of wooden Thomas the train stuff. Let me tell you this stuff is not cheap but sometimes I can find items of craigslist. They have fun putting the track together and play for hours. The boys also take turns on picking out the next engine or piece for the set and it has become a family activity. Like I said, it is pretty expensive as far as toys go but I think it is worth it. My friend thinks that I am insane for spending that kind of $$$ of toys.

My question is, what sort of stuff do you indulge your children with?

Jewelry, believe it or not. My oldest daughters are 8 yr old twins, and ever since about the age of 3, I''ve been buying them toe rings (they wear them as rings) for their birthday and Christmas each year, they now have quite the jewelry collection. All of my friends and family think I''m crazy! I usually spend around $30-$50 on them, I always buy them 14K white, rose or yellow gold so they last longer. They take really good care of them and just the other day, the first one broke through the band so I have to take it to get soldered.

Girlrocks, I am glad to hear that your twins take care of the rings. My boys are the same way with their trains. They treat them as something special and truly cherish them. Too many kids today just think everything is disposable

I really like the idea of toe rings for little girls''. Maybe I will try that for my nieces

Legos are the main indulgence. They''re so expensive too. Most of the big sets start at $79 and up. We got my son the motorized AT-AT last year and since we decided to get it after it was sold out in the stores, we bought in on eBay and ended up paying double the price and shelled out $200.

Horseback riding lessons for my daughters. It''s not cheap, but they love it, and riding has been good for them.

Clothes...

I like to take my stepson-to-be shopping just me and him - he is so darned cute that I can''t resist buying him the nicer stuff. He loves it! But his new school has a uniform policy. I think it''s blah.

Both my fiance and I tend to go a little overboard for birthdays and Xmas as well.

For the boys we spend so much on surfing/ocean equipment. You just have to have a board for all surf conditions!

And at $500+ a pop, it adds up! Then there are wetsuits - full suits and shorties, rash guards, boogie boards, skim boards, geez, the list goes on and on!

For DD I splurge on clothes and dolls. Mostly anything girly. She loves makeup and hair products so we have so much fun doing all things girly.

My girls are 4.5 and just under 3 and they really don''t care much about what I buy them at this point. I guess the obsession with my 4.5 year old is books. She is a book fiend. So every now and then, we go to the bookstore and get some new books.

Ride-on toys.
We have a retro pedal car (powder pink) for the DD, and a pedal tractor for the DS, which was tracked down from a specialist farm machinery shop in the industrial estate.
We also have a bike with tassels (bright pink) and a tricycle with tassels (also pink).

DS will be getting a tricycle and / or bicycle for Christmas!
Can''t help ourselves, have to get the nice ride-on toys for our darlings!

Be careful what you use to treat your kiddos--my parents always let us choose a brand new (as in NOT used!) book for an super treat.

Guess what I became? A high school English teacher and Reading Specialist. I still think of books as treats and indulgences. I can''t get enough.

My two older ones are a lot older now, and so their tastes are expensive.

My oldest is into guitars and amps and electronics and he likes guitars that are custom and run 1000.00''s of dollars. He takes amazing care of things and is a super talented musician so I do indulge him somewhat. He has quite the collection of guitars and amps currently. He is also a runner and so is very into running gear, has multiple pairs of expensive sneakers and all the tech stuff to go with it.

My middle son loves computers, computer software, cameras, video cameras, cell phones, expensive video games and systems, drums, and nice sunglasses and clothes. He also likes some jewelry (watches mostly). He tends to lose things though so I am hesitant to invest in things somethings. He is getting better though.

I like them to look nice so I do tend to go overboard, they love to get dressed up so it is nice that they appreciate it. My oldest is in adult clothing now which is crazy. I do that for me as much as for them. They look so handsome it kills me.

My youngest loves books, loves anything vehicle related and loves movies, he is less into clothes but he is obsessed with expensive RC cars and stuff, which tends to break in minutes after being brought home.

I used to invest in Thomas, had the table and all of the stuff, but my kids are past that. I do want to get Rokkenbok for my youngest this holiday season, it is incredible stuff.

Oh yeah! I forgot about books. We have 5 full bookcases of children''s books. My kids read constantly. It makes me so proud.

I have no idea who my kids are going to take after so I wonder what they''ll be like in the future. Gray is going to be high maintenance though.

Books and crafting stuff. My oldest is obsessed with books. I am slowing down on indulgences though. I have never been one to spoil but I'm a sucker for books. My 2nd oldest loves books now too which makes me so proud because she was a late reader, needed reading support at school and it use to be so hard to get her to read for enjoyment since she was struggling. She loves to read now.

My middle 2 children and my youngest is starting now to get into craft type stuff. Beading, drawing, make your own anything. And I am a sucker for buying supplies for them. It encourages creativity, keeps them away from the TV and they love to create and share with each other.

edited to add, Haven I think thats great. My daughter's reading teacher was so inspirational to her. She is now in 4th grade but has been saying since 2nd grade that she wants to be a teacher because of her reading specialist and either a regular elementary school teacher or help kids learn to read.

I tought my 2nd youngest to read in kindergarden because he was jealous his older siblings could read and it was so rewarding for both him and I! I love now that he proudly tells people "mommy taught me to read".

Yes, my kids love books too. It seems that books geared towards toddlers are the most expensive. I bought a book for my 2 year old at Borders and it was $17! Yikes! The artwork is great and my son loves it - "Olivia Saves the Circus" by Ian Falconer.
Check it out if you have young children

We usually get our books used or at www.amazon.com ~ much, much cheaper

Books are so vital to me. My kids all loved being read to. I love to buy books or go to the library with them. Reading is a priceless gift to have and appreciate. I still love to read.

Tis is true, tis is true. I''ve always felt like it was a privilege to be able to read.

I never mind having to wait anywhere if I have a good book. I feel totally fine when I know I have something great to read. My kids all love reading.
