In a world of live and let live…

Awww. Ty!
Sadly. No. And that’s why these teachers do it. They know they can get away with it because they know they teach in a low-income district where most parents don’t speak English nor do they know the first thing about advocating for their kids.
This creates a culture of low achievement and then teachers blame kids for not being motivated. The kicker is that these same teachers pride themselves in sending their own children to private schools bc they value education so much. It is really infuriating—Ugh.

Oh this is the saddest most confronting post i have read for ages
As i person with out kids i don't understand why all kids don't matter to all parents - not just their kids

Its good the kids have you to teach them
you can only do what you can do but you will be making a difference

If I ever get another job, it will definitely be either my own business or some type of contract work where I have very little ties to others in the organization. Too many workplaces are just such giant toilets. :lol-2:

That's why I like being an independent contractor/consultant as it means I don't have to manage people and do not have to put up with their corporate BS!

DK :lol-2:

@nala how has work been this week ?
Any better ?

Hi! Ty for asking! You are too kind. No. It’s the same old same old! Lol. But I am trying to just mind my own business and focus on my classroom. No news yet about our rating, tho.

You are lucky to have the luxury to do that. I inherit students who have had teachers with low expectations, who have failed to teach them the basics, etc. And trust me, I don’t do anything about these issues besides work harder to help my students. It’s not like I can discipline adults. I guess the fundamental difference is that I don’t view my profession as “my own work.”

Amen,
That was the case with my daughter, teacher's had low expectations and they failed to teach her the basics and to help when they knew she had learning disabilities. No amount of conferences seemed to help and it hurts me.

How is your daughter doing now ?

Back in the day when we had school cert i passed all 5 subjects and my mother proudly told one of my old primary school teachers she bumped into
the teacher said they had never expected me to do well :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire:
How dear they label people and give up on them
i taught myself to read in the end reading the cricket news in the newspaper

My heart hurts every time i read about someone who's teachers wrote them off

Does it bother you when your coworkers don’t pull their weight?
Would love to hear your thoughts.
Lately, I am frustrated at the lack of work ethic I see in my colleagues. I’m a teacher. We owe our kids more than what I see. Some teachers will complain endlessly about the importance of perfect attendance yet they—the teachers—are absent a lot!!! They complain that students have no motivation yet they don’t bother to grade consistently or to plan engaging lessons!
The point is—I am becoming bitter bc it’s the kids who pay the price. It’s hard to maintain an atmosphere of respect among a faculty when many don’t seem to take their profession seriously. Not to mention, these teachers give teachers and unions a bad name. Ugh.
So how do you deal with coworkers who suck?

I work in education as well, this is what I was told regarding what I thought were dubious teaching styles/ethics, "just because it is not the way you would do it doesn't make it wrong". I have seen a lot of different "styles".
Classroom teaching is exhausting. It is a grind I never realized until I worked in a school. The amount of pressure and stress teachers are under these days is unbelievable, they really are expected to be miracle workers.

at this point "I live and let live" when it comes to teaching. Even the ones that sit at their desks all day and let everyone else do the extra stuff. Parents have no idea what a teacher is expected to do everyday for very little pay.

Really try to keep mum now, the mask helps.

I think it would be very difficult to live and let live in the teaching environment. I feel for the teachers who are experiencing burn out, because I’m feeling burn out and I’m just a stay at home mom with one kid at home. I couldn’t imagine trying to manage thirty kids day after day. I truly admire the teachers who show up day after day, who feel inspired and ready to do their best. I think people like this are a different sort of person, more resilient maybe. I dunno.

My son has his challenges. This year has been a total mess as far as his education goes. Due to his mental illness, he isn’t doing much work at all and is failing. Our attempts at putting together an IEP haven’t helped. I don’t expect his teachers to exert themselves for my son. They are already so exhausted. If my kid isn’t going to do his work, they shouldn’t be expected to do extra work for him.

I truly feel this pandemic has hurt schools in so many ways. It’s taken motivation out of teachers and students. It’s made people depressed. It’s put them into pure survival mode. Maybe it isn’t live and let live. Maybe it would feel better to view these other teachers with some sort of compassion? I know I don’t feel back to 2019 yet. I’m not sure I ever will. My new normal feels like it will have a new set of priorities. It’s probably true that these teachers should probably find new professions. Maybe they will, once they’re feeling better.

Of course, if they were crappy teachers before the pandemic, this is all moot.
