Came across this article today, obviously I'm not a doctor (don't play one on tv either) but I thought it might be an interesting read for those who are affected by autism in some way.

StephanieLynn-

I do not know whether you know this, but the author of the article, which I did peruse, is a very controversial member of the anti-vaccine movement. As soon as I started to read what he wrote, I thought that was the case, so I looked up his background.

I don't care for these types of studies/articles (those related to the anti-vax movement) because they muddy the waters and create confusion.

Hey Deb,

Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't share it to support anti vaxxer views but just as another possible thing to look at that I would hope will be investigated by other scientists down the line.

Mom, I can understand that viewpoint. At this point though with the incidence of autism spectrum disorders being so prevalent, it can't hurt to look at these possible links (even if they originate from a radical source) and study them further.

ETA: This article also is also suggesting that a triggered immune response can down the line possibly lead to a diagnosis of autism, this isnt about vaccines but ANY virus or bacteria can cause an immune response that can be detrimental. They have already identified that some children are genetically at risk of neurological disorders yet there is no testing done prior to vaccination to identify these at risk individuals. The immune/neurological connection is not new in the study of autism and other spectrum disorders.

Research has debunked the vaccines-cause-austism theory, so no, I don't see the benefit of these types of articles. They do more harm than good in my opinion. Several studies have now identified symptoms of autism in children well before they receive vaccines and even more recent research had provided evidence that autism develops in utero (before a baby is born and receives vaccines).
Anyway, no harm done - just sharing my opinions too =)

This is exactly the start of the article I shared, they are exploring the link between maternal infection and its effect on the fetus and the possibility that an infection can cause schizophrenia or autism. So it's not really about vaccines cause autism, yes, they do explore that later in the article.

Consider this, women now receive vaccines when pregnant, which is a fairly new recommendation, if those vaccines trigger an immune response, then considering that recent research provided evidence that autism develops in utero, it may be possible then that the vaccines could play a part in atypical neurological development of a fetus.

It would be unfortunate if this study was labeled as anti-vax propaganda and dismissed, it simply is not the case. They probably should have left the latter out so that people would focus more on the points made in the beginning because once you start with the vaccine stuff it just becomes another vaccine autism article.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. What is unfortunate is that since a lot of women don't know they are pregnant right away, they could continue to take the medication and by the time they are aware, damage has already been done.

But then they say it's dangerous to immediately stop at antidepressant, so what to do? I didn't take anything during pregnancy yet my oldest has sensory and tic disorder. Didn't take anything with my second and had a stroke and he is fine. Beyond me.
