You said Thursday would be your first smoke-free day. I just wanted to pep you up for a day free of smoke in your lungs!

It''s a wonderful beginning and I''ll be hoping it''s a day that goes well, and then slides into a week gone well, then a month, and then a lifetime!

Congratulations!! You can do it!! You''ll be so thankful even a month from now; you''ll be able to breath better, taste things better, and the people around you will love that you don''t smell like an ash tray!!

Italia, Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking! I quit cold turkey for about 6 months last year but fell off of the wagon because I slipped up one day and viewed it as a failure. My best advice to you is that if you slip, view it as a mistake, and continue on with your plan.

I was planning on quitting for good in a couple of months when I move to the city where my fiance lives, but you''ve inspired me, and maybe it would help us both to know that someone out there is facing this challenge at the same time. I''ll make a deal with you if you''re interested. I''m going to throw away my pack right now, and if you want, we can post about our successes and challenges every so often... (I know that would make it easier for me!)

Best of luck! Looking forward to updates!

Hi Italia, how''s the quitting smoking going? I quit 5 years ago (after 10 years of smoking) and it was my 5th or 6th attempt. It''s difficult but YOU CAN DO IT!! I quit cold turkey and instead started eating tons of ice cream

Here''s some things to look forward to: 1. you''ll be able to breathe better, 2. food will taste better, 3. be able to climb stairs easier, 4. you won''t get those small wrinkles around your mouth, 5. skin looks better, 6. fingers won''t be yellow, 7. clothes won''t smell, 8. teeth won''t be yellow, 9. no more bronchitis in the winter!!, 10. with the $$ you save not buying ciggies you can buy yourself some nice bling!
Good luck! We''re rooting for you!

Such good points! Beforeyou know it you''re going to be a non-smoker and you will be so much happier. Can''t recall if I''ve stated it in this thread yet, but i quit a year ago this February and have had some small setbacks. I stillllll get cravings, and you know what? I have come here to the WWT the latest time and been given awesome support. You''ve joined the right forum for giving up smoking! These people have been a godsend to me, and helped me overcome some major cravings, even a year after I officially quit.

Hope things are going well. If not, well hey, we all slip up, don''t every be afraid to come back to this thread and admit your downfalls and start over. We all have your back.

If you''re doing well and don''t need our help anymore, and it makes your cravings worse to even come to this thread, that is understandable as well. I''ve been there!

Best of luck Italia! I''ve never smoked myself but I''ve seen how difficult it is for friends that have quit. Sending best wishes and I know you can do it!

what a great decision! i quit smoking two years ago and while i''ve had two slip ups during extremely stressful times where i''ll buy a pack, smoke 2 and toss it, i look at it as a slip-up, not an all-out failure and it''s kept me sane. my biggest tip for quitting is becoming, or staying, active. feeling yourself cough out all of that crap out of your lungs or feeling yourself get really winded makes you realize how important your goal is. Good luck!!! oh yeah. . and if you ever decide to try the patch. . .please read the directions very carefully! i smoked more than a pack a day and failed to read the directions. i put the patch on right after my last cigarette and started sweating, vomiting, and getting really dizzy. it took me passing out for my poor husband to realize that it was the patch. neither of us put two and two together until i was really really ill. just a warning.

My BF was a smoker (1-2 packs a day!!

) and quit cold turkey after reading ''The Easy Way to Quit Smoking'' by Alan Carr. I don''t smoke, but there''s a section in there for non-smokers helping quitters that he wants me to read. He wants me to read the whole thing. He really loved that book. Good luck.

I''m in the same situation - smoke about 6 a day and I''m planning to stop at Easter.

I had a 30 a day habit and gave up in 2002. Started smoking again last Spring. I was so annoyed with myself.

The first time I gave up I was in hospital with pleurisy for a month with copious amounts of morphine. It was easy just to not have one when I came out. Plus I moved home with my parents which meant I was away from normal routines.

For me the biggest problem is the hand-to-mouth thing, so I''m going to buy one of those fake cigarettes and go and stand on the balcony at work and "smoke" that for 5 minutes a couple of times a day.

I must admit feeling quite nervous about the whole thing - it''s amazing how hard it is to think of a life with no more cigarettes. Sounds pathetic, but it can make you feel a bit panicky.

I hope you are going well with it.

Feel free to come and vent - I''ll soon know exactly what you are going through!
