I can''t stand it anymore!!! It''s hot. It''s frizzy. It''s in my face all of the time!!

I''m 48 and think it''s time to just give up on having hair I have to "do." My hair is thick and naturally curly. With coloring it looks nice and healthy. I need wash and wear hair. Any suggestions on styles?

Are you SURE you are ready for this?
How long is your hair now?
How long do you want it to be?
When mine was waist length it was like
part of my identity.
Losing it was very traumatic for awhile.
My hair is thick and naturally curly too.
A good stylist should be able to create
something wash and wear and very flattering for you.

Oh, I do this every couple of years. I keep it about shoulder length because I want it to be "long" but then it starts strangling me at night, blowing around, and looking all around ratty. Then I have it cut off. I've never regreted cutting it. It's only hair, it grows.

My only problem is finding a picture of a style that I like. They're all trendy or have heavy bangs or are for fine, whispy hair.

I have what I call"80s Hair"
It has one style it takes to naturally
like an 80s perm and I don''t fight it.
I''m not trendy but maybe I''m retro ??

I'm a big fan of shorter, not pixie short hair. I have fine hair so any pics I have won't help you but I just wanted to say go for it! I'm growing mine out for the wedding and the day after I'm cutting it off!

ETA-I'm not dissing pixie cuts. Some people can carry them off perfectly, just not this chubby round face!

A few years ago, I cut my below the waist, thick, wavy hair to a pixie cut. It was the best thing I ever did (although it is just below the shoulders now, it is going to be hacked away soon). As you said, it is only hair, so go for it!

Unfortunately, I don''t have a lot of experience with curly hair, so no specific advice.

Maybe this will help...

ETA: I have fine thin wavy hair and their products work wonderfully for me. Maybe they have a salon near you? I haven't been but they sound like they know how to handle curly haircuts.

At 48 you are FAR TOO YOUNG to have the "I give up" haircut. I have below the shoulder slightly curly/wavy hair. Maybe your stylist can come up with something to give you layers that work together with minimal fuss--that''s what I did.

Maybe...Sleep on this a few nights? My hair is thick, fine and wavy.
I am 54 and I am not ready to cut all my hair off yet--or ever. I had it bobbed a but too short a couple years back and my neck froze. I hated that sensation.
Plus, in summer, I want to be able to get it off my neck in a ponytail. Can you do that? If my hair looks bad, I want to be able to put it in a ponytail anyway.

Pink, I seem to have it up all the time. I pin back the top then twist and pin the rest up in the back. My daughter told me I was starting to look like a Duggar!

Bahahahahahhaha -- Oh, nothing like a teenager to tell it like it is -- no holds barred!

I cut my hair short every summer, Uppy, but not super-short. I can''t stand the feeling of hot hair during a humid midwestern summer. I''m 52. I usually get some sort of "shattered" bob with layers, and I keep it around chin length for summer.

Google "shattered bob" and look for one that will work with your hair type. My hair is fine, straight and thick. You''ll have more options if your hair has some wave or curl to it.

Well, is it too short instead of too
long? How come you have to add all those pins to the ponytail? I have a T3 straightener I run through mine. My stylist thins it out every eight weeks when she cuts it. 50% of mine must have been removed/ thinned out. Otherwise it would look like a basket. Also, do you know what Moroccan Oil is? That helps with taming. They have a FB page.

uppy - what are some of your ideas? Bobs are really cute, and you could get one slightly long enough to curl... or I really like the do like Alice in Twilight... b/c you can twirl it out like she does or wear it straight framing your face

How about this? Its short without being too short and its not supposed to look neat so you can just wash and blast with the hair dryer.

Maisie, that looks really cute! I''ve finally found one that I think will work without being too short (or too mullet like).

What about when SJP had that cute curly bob?

Okay, you know what I look like. What are your suggestions?

A cute, classic, just below your chin bob! Have them put in a few layers. You can wear it curly, but it also looks super cute when you do it with rollers. My mom had her hair cut like this and it was her favorite hairstyle, ever. Her hair is the exact same texture as yours.

YES!
You are on the right track now! But, that is only half the solution: You have to find someone who knows what they are doing. That is the hard part. Plus, every time you find someone good, they quit, move, have a baby, etc.

i''ve always regretted it when i''ve done that.......and i''ll never have short hair as shown in those pictures again. always always always my hair is below my shoulders in length. i love that its no work and when dirty i can just put it up. my hair is fine and when those short ends get loose, they bother me when they get in my face. no matter. i''ll never have layered hair either. and i''m way past 48.

just remember how long it will take to grow it out once you''ve gone that short and layered.

mz

ps it probably helps that i live in an area where long hair is not unusual for we "mature" women.

That is a very cute hairstyle, but those bangs would drive me crazy in less than a week.

I like the SJP pics Uppy! I might have to steal the idea haha. I''m rarely happy with my hair, so I feel your pain!

I love all of the pictures posted! I am at that inbetween stage with my hair. I usually get it cut around now but I am persevering. I am scrunching it instead of straightening all the time. Its quite like the pics you posted Uppy. At least my roots aren''t so noticible as I am trying to grow my colour out.

I really need to get mine shaped... it is wild and unruly, and I''m starting to hate it. I was wanting to grow it out... but I have yet to figure out styling with long hair. When I was in highschool it was insanely long... and just hung there.. and it wasn''t horrible, but it was so drab.

Uppy, as a fellow curly haired lady, I have to tell you to find a stylist that has curly hair herself. Any time I have had someone that didn''t really GET my hair I ended up with a funky "hole" in my hair or layers that didn''t sit right once my curls dried.

You have such a cute face I think the shorter hair will be great!

I''ve got a good stylist with curly hair, I just am never good about maintenance. And stylists are always petrified about cutting it too short. I''m always saying "shorter..... SHORTER!"

My mom is 48, and she recently got a buzz-cut (not kidding!). Maybe you should try that

Lily, if I could get away with that without totally humiliating my daughter totally I would do it! I''ve always been disappointed that baldness in women is not embraced.

Uppy, i think the SJP styles would work really well with your curly hair. You may not even need to do too much styling.
A little relaxing serum to help control the curls and make them sit nicely. It''s a good length for short hair. Still ''wash and wearable'' but still enough hair to play with if you feel like it.
Maybe you should show your daughter the pics and see what she thinks? You can always rely on kids to be honest.

Would love to see a before and after pic if you go through with it!
