If You're Looking For a New TV . . .

We just got one for DH's birthday, and we're all thinking it's pretty amazing!

It turns 2D into 3D!

It really does! We were looking for a 3D TV, but the limited selection of 3D movies was pretty sad. But this one takes ANYTHING on TV and makes it 3D! We're watching House, Big Bang Theory, the news, whatever, and it's 3D! :appl:

It's the LG 55LM6400, here's a link: http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-55LM6400-led-tv

The glasses are the regular kind you get from the movie theater (as opposed to the ones that plug in, or are rechargeable). The conversion works real well with HD programming, kind of meh with old school stuff. The actual 3D movies (we got a 3D blu ray) are spectacular, but the 2D conversion is wild. Even commercials are fun, since lots are HD now.

Just thought I'd pass it along, since the none of the sales guys we talked to really mentioned it. I guess you can't really demo it in the store, since the demo TV's are all plugged into a 3D movie. This is really tons better for us, since we weren't excited about buying a bunch of 3D movies.

Just throwing it out there. :wavey:

Hey, we recently bought a similar tv, the 55LM6700. We like the 2d --> 3d thing, too. It's fun to play with, and I much prefer the passive tech - the shutter glasses are too much for me. We mostly watch tv on our PCs, so a big screen is pretty awesome. I got used to the size really quickly, though, and it feels totally normal now. And, we finally use our living room for something! (We are geeky-gamer-types around here.)

Yeah, I read about that a couple of days ago, as well, and it was something we suspected going into the purchase. It def wasn't a must-have feature for us, just something cool - and another part of why we chose passive 3d. It's there, but not the main feature. And, we don't really go to the movies much (maybe once/year), so now we don't have to miss out if there is a 3d movie we're interested in seeing.

It would be fun for a few days but as the article says, I think it would wear off here after that. Not worth paying extra, to me. If it's glasses-required, I'd avoid it -- too much trouble.

Well, since 3DTV sans glasses isn't even an option currently, at least I can wear the goofy sunglasses in the comfort of my own home. Like I said, it's just a neat feature to complement the LED-LCD, Energy Star rating, HDMI, (most importantly) a refresh rate our dog can supposedly see, plus blah, blah, etc. It also provides my husband with an after-work hobby - he's been rewriting/perfecting the code for his custom remote for the past couple of weeks. Techies, I tell ya!

Interesting article today on cnn about the 3D hype bubble about to burst:

http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/13/tech/gaming-gadgets/3-d-hype-bubble-finally-busted/index.html?hpt=hp_bn5

I'm in the industry. I go to the national broadcast show (NAB) and the last few years everyone's been desperately trying to hype 3D. The consumers don't seem to care (I don't go to CES though, so I don't know how they're pushing it there.)

Personally, I couldn't give a crap about 3D. But I know it's fun for some. :))

I think it's the lack of programming that is killing 3D. It's like trying to sell the Laserdisk, with only 10 disks available. We were going to pass on it until we saw the conversion technology. And it's pretty impressive. If we were football fans, we would love it even more.

So, what's the new-new thing coming out? DH is a techie, so I'll need to line it up for Christmas, whatever it is . . . :D

The shutter glasses make me nauseous, and it seemed silly to have to recharge them.

DH is very techie, if I mentioned his cnet name, you might recognize him, he's been writing little applets and shareware for years.

Did you try the 3D for games? It's pretty cool! :appl:

It probably will wear off, but it got me through another birthday! ;)
