Now that I know you're in Bellevue, it makes more sense (sorry, TooPatient!). The schools are great, but otherwise it's just a suburb. Pretty, but still a suburb that could be almost anyplace. I work in Bellevue, but would never live there.

We have a number of empty-nester couples who've moved from the Eastside and bought houses in our neighborhood and love it. It's just a completely different experience living right in the city. And I swear it rains more in Bellevue. I don't know how many times it's pouring when I leave the office then I drive across the bridge and everything is dry. Must be something about the lake.

I'd never live there either :))

I also work (and attend school) in Bellevue. There are some great neighborhoods, but the cost of living there is just too much.

There are some lower cost of living places (not cheap, but better than Bellevue) right around Bellevue that are great if you like suburb or even a bit further out is more country.

For the true "city people", Seattle does have some great areas to live. I know some people in a couple of neighborhoods there and they really seem to enjoy where they are.

Rainwood, and TooPatient, my intention in this thread was not to pick a fight with Seattlelites, but your denegrating my suburb choice is making that difficult :) Is this a case of that famous Seattle open-mindedness and progressive thinking? :)

Our hope to eventually settle somewhere other than this area is based both on our day to day suburban experience and Seattle city experiences (although, my husband commutes into Seattle every day for work, so the city is a daily thing for him). Our most amazing PNW experiences so far have been AWAY from the city in the spectacular natural surroundings, not Seattle itself.

Anyway, for anyone also looking for a new city to call home, I found a couple of websites with some really interesting reading. This one has more of a Midwest focus: http://www.urbanophile.com/what-i-believe/

And this one has tons of good stuff: http://www.newgeography.com/

Happy reading!

Hmmm. You said you didn't want to stay in Bellevue because you don't really like it and are looking for some world-class city to move to. Several of us sympathized with your plight and said we wouldn't want to live there either. Now you're unhappy that we denigrated your choice of suburb. Okay, I give up. I hope you find whatever you're looking for.

Sorry Rainwood, I've obviously offended you. That was not my intention. In all of my posts in this thread, I purposefully tried not to use the words, "I would never" or "I can't stand" or "I hate this about Seattle" etc. I don't feel that way, I just don't choose to settle here, that's all. However, YOU chose to use those words, so naturally I'm going to feel a bit defensive :) And didn't you see the two smileys, which meant my reply was in jest? :) :)

Your post implied that my problem is that I live in a specific suburb, and that if I lived in Seattle proper, I would feel differently. I respectfully disagree. The Seattle metropolitan area, as a whole, is expensive - not just the suburban areas like Mercer Island, Bellevue, or Sammamish. etc. Also, I didn't say I was looking for "some world-class city to move to". I said I missed living in a world-class city, but would consider compromise on moving back to one for cost of living reasons.

Again, I wasn't trying to start an argument about Seattle and didn't counter anyone's pro-Seattle list. But apparently I did just that, so no more thoughts on Seattle or posts on moving from me!!!

Peace.

From Wikipedia: "In CNN Money's 2011 review of the best places to live in the United States, Sammamish was honored with the 15th place." lol ;))

Also, they will be using goats as a clean-up crew!

I always thought Louisville, KY sounded nice.

I love Chicago though, and always will!
