... what would it be? DH has an assignment for one of his classes where he has to design an android app for a phone. What is an app that you would find useful?

I want a satellite on/off button on my home screen. I never turn it on because it drains too much battery, but it would be great to have a little switch for when I'm using the GPS or Maps.

I don't have a smartphone so I'm not sure if something like this already exists, but here are my ideas.

Price checker. Like I could type in Pampers and get the prices at my local stores.

Medication cross reference for negative interactions. Type in what you're on and have it tell you what you cannot take for a cold.

Youtube app where you can put in certain tags and be notified when those tags are used. But, you'd probably end up with hundreds a day if you didn't have some other qualifiers.

Concerts or events notifier. Enter in your preferred venues and be notified when your favs are coming. And a link to ticketmaster.

Coupon app. Enter in your brand name and get coupons downloaded to your phone that you don't have to print out.

Survey app. You know how you always get a thing on your receipts that say "go here to enter for a 1000 dollar gc and take our survey!" ? It could have a list of all the companies that run those surveys that you could browse through and do the surveys right there quick and easy.

Gambling odds. There are all sorts of techniques to figure your odds at certain machines if they have a list of what's been hit recently. The app would be incredibly detailed but could be used to see if that machine is likely to hit again.

That's all I've got for now. I hope he gets a great idea!!

I know that all of those exist except for the survey app. Haven't seen one of those.

Not sure if this is possible ....
I would like an app that takes stored images of my clothes and helps me match together outfits .... even if it's manually on the screen like a paper doll .... scroll through pants, scroll through, tops, etc.

an app that told you when new free books were out on amazon, that I might like to read. It would have to track what I already
downloaded and suggest free books that I would like. I check amazon everyday because I don't want to miss one. Sometimes the
books only stay on the top 100 free for a few days. A lot of books that I have got for free now are back up to 10 bucks. That would
be a great app for me personally.

This would be great.

About a year ago, I was searching for an app that would help me keep track of my kid's clothes. Since I buy stuffs on sale way in advance (my 1yr old has some size 5 clothes), I sometimes forget what I have. I didn't find anything that was helpful then, don't know if there's something like that now. So an inventory app for clothes with stored pics.

Neat ideas, keep them coming!

I would like a magic eight ball app

and

a rescue app that listens to your off phone real time conversations and when you say a user preset phrase it "calls" you so that you have an incoming call that you just have to take that gets you out of a real world situation.

The latter would be the greatest app ever!

Or if you're in a phone call that just won't end, the app makes it sound like you're losing signal and then disconnects the call.

I suggested a tool for teachers to use, so that you could input the number of points available and see the grading scale, instead of having to use a sliding scale thingymabob and do it manually... I think a lot of teachers would actually use it! He needs it to be something fairly simple to make since it's the first one they are doing. Any more ideas?

I agree with having an app that would input your clothes. Gap had one available but my photo skills were aweful. I'd like to find one that has an open database, something like polyvore, that you could access a store and tag items you have and it would store the images and then you could put together outfits.

I'd like to have an app that could accurately give me a description of what I can expect in terms of nutrition values with a given recipe after I input each ingredient.

I'd really like an app that gives me horse pedigrees.

I like the recipe app idea! No idea if that would work for him, it might just be too much information/programming for what is needed for his assignment, but it's a cool idea!

Both of theses exist in some form on the iPhone. There are magic 8 ball apps and crystal ball apps that are fun to play with. Then there is an app called "Appzilla" that allows you to set a timer for a fake phone call. It's not in real time though according to your conversation but it is still fun! That app has tons of useless stuff on it.

I haven't looked for this particular type of app in a while, but last time I did I couldn't find anything like it for the iPhone.

I REALLY want a combo travel/weather app. So if I'm taking a roadtrip through the mountains I'd like to be able to input my start and end points and see weather along the way. To get this info I would have had to jump around between a map app and a weather app, and that would have been extremely difficult before multi-tasking was added to the iPhone. Now with multitasking I could do it but it would still be difficult. You could even add interest points along the way, point out rest stops, restaurants, etc.

A lot of these apps already exist, but they're still great ideas!

I would like to see an app that turns your phone into a radar detector, but I'm not sure if that's possible. They're also not legal in all states IIRC. So maybe just one where people can report which mile marker on which highway they see police hanging out frequently, and it can integrate with your GPS navigation?

ETA: Sparkly Blonde, if you have an Android phone, do a long press on the home screen and go to widgets. There's one called "Power Control" that lets you toggle on/off Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and background data, and you can adjust your screen brightness.

There is a calorie counter online that I use called Calorie Count Recipe Analysis. Don't know if there's an app but you could get lots of info off the site if he wants a starting point,

HA - I want an app that does the laundry for me......but I don't see that happening anytime soon!

Alternately, in consideration of the troubles my friend Dee Jay had recently, I'd suggest an app that works similar to Shazam, except it listens to the sounds made by an unidentified creature in your house and determine what it is! :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

And, of course, I'm still lobbying for Pie Calc.

I want an app that will send an email to me with the exact location of my phone so I can find it when I lose it.
That would be awesome.

If it could also locate things like keys, certain receipts, and missing socks, I'd pay for it.

I have long wanted a really good alert system that didn't clutter up my calendar with stupid things like "pick the kids up from school" but still reminded me of those events too and was all fully customizable. Maybe it exists for iphone but I never could find one for my treo.

How could we all forget the most useful app ever - a pricescope forum app?!

I don't know if you ever use http://www.wheresmycellphone.com but I find it to be a godsend.

There's a great app for that "find my phone" my husband and I each have it on our iPhones. You can send a signal to your lost phone to lock it, erase it or leave a visible message for anyone that finds it. You can use another phone or computer to pinpoint on google maps exactly where your phone is. Really cool.

There are several calorie / nutrition apps...

You type in what you eat - right down to the exact brand of any particular item, enter the amount you ate, time of day, etc. and it tracks your full nutritional / caloric intake. Creates charts, summaries, etc. Very cool. You also can set a target weight and it will set a plan for what your intake/output should be for whatever period of time you choose to reach that goal weight.

I thought the idea of the rescue app was cool so I asked some developer friends at a demo night. They all said it wouldn't work with the current technology. The voice recognition software isn't really there yet and it would be worse if muffled by a purse or pocket. Also, they said an app like that would require the phone to be on so the battery would drain too quickly. Boo reality. I would totally buy that app.

That is so cool! I have a Blackberry so I don't do the app thing, but if I had an iPhone this app would be AMAZING.

Barrister Sillyberry--I didn't know about that! I keep my ringer off at all times, but this website is really going to help out DH, who seems to be losing his phone quite a bit more lately. :cheeky:
