Mine is 1.2cts (spinel) and I say "One and a quarter carats." Its just easier.

the size of mine is awkward. I say 2.7 instead of 2.71. I feel like I can''t say it is 2.75 because that is just as awkward to say and it feels like a lie... I think it is too far from 2.5 so I just say 2.7. If I was at 2.48 I would eat the lie to just say two and a half. But two and three quarters is a mouthfull lol

Well to be fair, if it was 2.57 I would still say 2 and a half.

Not me, mine is 2.57 and I want every single point!!! I waited a long time for those points!!!

I round it off. My stone is 1.67, so I usually say 1.7 (saying 1.75 seems more difficult). Or I'll just say it's "almost 2 carats" or "a bit under 2 carats" because, by dimensions, it faces up around 1.9ct (it's super shallow) and all people care about is what size it looks like. I also feel like this is the more casual answer and I usually use this with co-workers or people I don't know well.

I don't even remember the total carat weight, and I feel like that number doesn't mean much anyway. If people are asking, it's because they want to know the weight of the center stone, not that plus the little diamonds on the side. Maybe if it was a 3 stone, tcw would be more appropriate.

Depends on whether or not they are generally interested, or just making small talk. I never, for instance, told any of the salespeople when I was shopping for wedding dresses/vendors. I just played dumb about it. But, for anyone who is ring shopping or with my friends, I tell them the exact weight. I have, though, been known to tack on what it faces up as to that number , since that is bigger.

Nobody has asked me either (or at least that I can remember). With my earrings, people have asked and I''ve said the exact weight and usually the person will look confused by my answer. lol Since mine are .82, I don''t want to go down and say 3/4 nor go up and say 1 ct, so it just makes sense to say their weight.

Considering my friends are completely unimpressed with jewellery you''re more likely to overhear them say that they can''t believe I''d wear something that delicate and without personality. The only ring they like is the wider 5 mm antique filigree wedding band. And mostly I get that it''s beautiful but uncomfortable when they try it on or that they''d be afraid to lose it.

ETa - I went and looked at some pictures and I can't tell if there are 42 stones or 46 stones or 50 stones lol And I can't remember if they were 1.5 pointers or 2 pointers... cool - I think I have 3.5 carats all of a sudden lol

I say it is just under 2.4ct (it is 2.39ct) but faces up like a 2ct diamond as sapphires weigh more, or I just say it is about 8mm and do not really answer their question. I find people are usually really asking what *size* it is and they often think weight describes size (and do not realize cut affects face up size or that different type of stones weigh differently at same *face up* size and so on).

I have only been asked size a couple times. Most just compliment it rather than ask size or weight.

I do not give weight of melee. I am not even sure what it is.

I can only remember one person IRL ever asking me the carat weight of my e-ring (or any of my others for that matter), and she was a close colleague of mine so I gave her the exact weight.

I''m never sure what I would do in that case if it were to come up. Most of the world understands quarters and halves of carats, so I''d probably just tell them it was close to 3/4 ct. I suppose.

I''m in the "it depends" camp. If it''s someone who''s genuinely interested because they''re a jewelry nut or shopping for their own e-ring, I go off on all the details of cut, color, weight vs. face-up size, melee stones, etc. Fun!

If it''s in casual conversation, I''d just round down to "two," but it hardly ever comes up. There just aren''t a lot of contexts in which it''s even remotely socially appropriate for someone to ask, and I don''t deal with that many rude people (anymore).

I''ve haven''t been asked this question in recent years. When I was younger, and received my first e-ring, which was .81 ct, people would ask because a lot of my friends were in the market for e-rings at the time, and I was one of the earlier ones to get engaged, so everyone wanted to try it on for point of reference. I remember saying the exact numbers: 0.81ct because I felt that saying 3/4 was low-balling it, and saying close to 1 ct would be grossly exaggerating.

Funny thing, my upgraded ring now is exactly one carat more at 1.81 ct, and no one has asked me! I''d probably say 1.8 when asked.

Good point Addy, I am hyper attentive to diamonds around me, but make sure I'm not obvious about the interest--- .

Would I dare say, what a great ring, may I see it, discuss it with you, that would be a big NO. I would look away, but I do take note- subtly- not to make anyone uncomfortable. So many big gorgeous rocking, hocking, stones in NYC everyday, on buses, trains and streets-it's not really unusual and most of these ladies who wear them scarcely think about it, at least that's the way they make it look, but my radar is on, cause I love it.
