FI is going to have to buy a really nice black suit for our wedding. He has an athletic build and there''s no way he''d fit into any rentals. He needs something that can be cut to fit his body. That''s fine with us since it would be great to invest in a nice suit that he can wear again. But I digress...

How can I make sure the groomsmen match? Should they just wear their choice of black suit? Would this look weird?

Well if they choose their own suits, the black color of their suits will not match in the sunlight. Out of the sunlight there should be little to no difference. If this is a problem for you, maybe some places rent suits and just the groomsmen do that. Also, maybe you could coordinate the ties by color. For example, maybe the groom could wear a black tie(I even saw a picture with a tie and black vest that looked stunning) and the groomsmen could wear ties that coordinate with the bridesmaids.

What about putting the groomsmen in dresses? You know, to match the bridesmaids?

OK, sorry, that probably wasn't even funny.

Well, my FI will probably do this too (the black suit thing). Why not put the groomsmen in suits too... but any black suit that they like. Then they can wear matching ties. My guess is the differences in cut and subtle variations in colour won't make a big difference in pictures.

And your FI can wear a different tie.

And have you considered pocket squares? I'm a huuuuge fan of a well chosen pocket square with a formal suit.

Oh gosh, FI is BEGGING for a pocket square. LOL!

I would really like the groomsmen to pick the suit of their choice. I don't know how I feel about the color looking different in the sunlight though. Hmmm... I have to think about this and maybe look at some suits somewhere to see how black varies. In a perfect world, they would purchase matching ones (to match each other, not necessarily FI) but I wouldn't ask for something like that. I'll try to google for suit rentals, and I hope they'll look decent.

FI could maybe buy a tux instead, but it won't be as re-wearable. Also, our first choice venue is "rustic elegant". The ceremony would be in an apple orchard. I can't picture a tux in an apple orchard.

I think it would be nice for the groomsmen to wear ties that match the bridesmaids dresses, and FI would have a tie that is the same fabric as my dress (if this would look okay).

The black in the suits may be noticable up closer, but shouldn''t be too noticable in the pictures if that''s what you''re worried about

I agree it will be very, very barely noticeable. And you always have to weigh cost against benefit!

IG, I thought it was funny, fwiw.

I think in whatever case, whether renting or buying/renting, the blacks will not necessarily match. Even if all the g-men are renting from the same location, there is no guarantee that all those black tuxes or suits came from the same dye lot. Honestly, the minute differences in dye lot hues will not show up in pics from my experience. So I think you''re ok if FI buys a nice black suit and the g-men purchase or rent their own. I would make sure to specify a style (single or double breasted) as far as suit coat, and have them wear the same color shirt and tie. That way you''ll have consistency without being totally demanding down to the last detail. Oh, definitely tell them black socks and shoes...that could be a complete disaster if not followed to your specs.
