I wish someone would start a company that would make a dress/suit/quilt or whatever for you.

I would send in the pattern, the fabric and the buttons and BOOM! back would come a dress.

Or I could send in the fabrics for a quilt, a pattern, and BOOM! back would come a quilt.

Is there such a thing?

I also wish someone would start a company that would change those WAY high light bulbs in my house. I would even be happy to supply the bulbs. Come to my house with a ladder, be fully insured, and change them. No BOOM! on this one.

Do you have an idea for a company you wish someone would start?

You can find custom tailors in most cities, ILander! DH has had suits tailor made for him here in the US and while on vacation.

If you want a budget option you can check out the local university and see if they have a costume shop in their theatre department. When I was a costume design major we would take in outside tailor work to make some extra cash.

I don't know about a company, but I have a genius seamstress who can make anything I can visualize, and she is inexpensive, to boot! I've brought her rough sketches, fabrics, and buttons, and she has made me a maxi dress for a beach wedding, a wrap dress, three blouses, and a pair of "sailor" style pants. She speaks very little English, and we have to depend on her 10 year-old granddaughter to translate for us, but somehow she makes me exactly what I want.

That's a dream right there!! Even better would be if I would get my butt in gear and order my new sewing machine so I can do this stuff myself.

This isn't really a separate company, but I wish clothing stores had seamstresses on hand so that when you buy clothes that need tailoring, you could go right to their dept. and drop them off. I HATE making a separate trip, and most times, I just bring the clothes home and they stay in their bags forever until I take them somewhere.

Same with me Zoe! Or I end up having to buy ridiculously high heels so my new pants don't drag on the ground.

It's a time issue for me. It's so hard to get to the tailor's when you have an 8 - 5 job. Also, the best tailor I ever found was by our old office, so it would take awhile for me to get to it now. :((

Have you ever noticed how many seamstresses are available for men? They have them in most men's shops. I also noticed how the tailoring room in Nordstrom's Rack is located in the mens dressing room area and not the women's. I only know this because I was a total idiot one day and tried a skirt on ....right out in the middle of the store by the mirror...under the skirt I was already wearing. I did this because the line was way too long at the ladies dressing room.

As luck would have it, the zipper was all jacked and I couldn't get it unzipped. A employee came over and tried to help me get out of it, but she was unsuccessful as well. We had to march over to the seamstress area in the mens dressing room where I looked the total idiot that I was as everyone was looking at me while the seamstress tried to figure out how to get me out without ruining the skirt. It miraculously unzipped in front of all the guys...go figure.

I couldn't get out of the store fast enough.

Ha, that's really funny, Miracles! Yeah, I've noticed that men's stores have a tailor right there. Seriously, this is something women's stores should have.

I have a great seamstress near me. That's what they are there for. That said, it can be fun making the stuff yourself if you know how.

Nordstroms has this. Even the RACK has this. It's great. Seriously. One of the reasons I shop there so often. Yes, they are located in the men's section. But if you ask, they can have them paged and brought over to you with no issue at all.

I speculate that Nordstrom has tailors for men and not women for two reasons.

Generally, women's clothing is more complex and more work to tailor well.
Women are generally more fussy and sensitive on how fat [they think] clothing makes them look than men are.
IOW, generally men are easier for a tailor to please than women.
Just a guess.

[Oh Look! Kenny's running away as fast as he can.]

My mom would certainly be an excellent candidate to work for the that company!
She is an extremely gifted tailor, and seamstress.

She has made suits (for my son), wedding dresses (for a friend), halloween costumes (for my daughter), Duvet cover (for me), Sofa slip covers (for my brother), throw pillows, prom dresses (for me)......

I love to have her sew custom things for me, in fact, I'm thinking of asking her to make curtains for my entire house. I really don't need her for clothing...my size, length and everything is so average, and it's just easier to shop off the rack.

Department stores have tailors housed in the men's department because they sell suits that require tailoring before they can be worn. While some women like to have their department store clothing tailored to get the optimal fit, it's rare that a woman will buy something unfinished from a dept. store.

We actually had a great experience with Macy's and their tailor. DH needed an evening suit at the last minute (don't ask--we had a wedding and he neglected to realize that his suit no longer fit,) and we bought a Hugo Boss suit one evening, they measured DH, and had it all ready for him the next morning.

Yes, I have a friend who does exactly what you are talking about ilander! She showed me some quilts she put together for people; they gave her the material and patterns they wanted and boom there it is! :D

I wish someone would start a company where there could be a man/woman for hire by the hour to do whatever you needed around the house. Not like a cleaning person (although that would probably be a possibility, if that's what you wanted), but to do all those little chores that you can't do yourself, or just never get around to. Like when I was getting ready to put the house on the market I had to get a tall friend to come over and use the stainless steel cleaner on the stove exhaust hood all the way up to the ceiling because I have been staring it for YEARS but couldn't reach it myself; or someone who would take all those bags of clothes in the garage over to the Salvation Army; or plant the window boxes with something pretty and springy come May; or go to all the Home Depot stores nearby and hunt down a replacement for that one missing patio furniture cushion that blew away in the big storm; or organize the CDs alphabetically so that you can find something without a lot of hassle when you're really in the mood for a little live Bon Jovi. Small things that would just make your life better. Kind of like a Girl Friday, payable by the hour!

Oh totally! I started looking on Craigslist for a person who organizes things. That will come into my spare bedroom's closet with me. I'd organize the stuff into piles of what I want to keep and what I don't. They could take the stuff I don't to Goodwill or whatever and then organize and repack the stuff I do want to keep. Couldn't find anyone. But for a college student, that would be a great job. Still it would be risky so... start a company, licensed bonded and insured and then I would hire you.

Seriously, I'm GREAT at stuff like this... just not in my own house! Tell me what you want done and I'm there! Hm... if this whole new job thing doesn't work out I should start "Girl Friday" and do this sort of thing!

I think you should. And sign me up. I can write contracts and review them and tell you if you are being an idiot with your contract (or anything else, I'm always happy to tell someone they are being an idiot). Great for wedding planning, etc. Or for small businesses that need standard contracts with customers or vendors but don't want to hire a law firm.

I have heard of professional organizers that will come in and help you clean out and set up systems for/with you. And we have a company around here that you can hire a 'handyman' to do all sorts of things- change light bulbs, grease door hinges, clean gutters, tighten drawer pulls, etc. So maybe not all in one place, but I think you can hire people to do most of that stuff for you! I would spend so much making lists of what I wanted them to accomplish I could have just done it myself :errrr:

Yes! And it seems like they have a professional organizing organization :cheeky: that certifies organizers, too. I've seen professional organizers work serious magic on the show Hoarders.

Have you tried looking on Angie's List? I found a handyman on there in my area who is a "Rent a Husband." He does pretty much everything. I had him screen-in my back patio, change outside lights, do a ton of little jobs around the house that DH and I are completely inept at.

Anyone have a link? I really do need one of these people.

Our neighbor actually found two women who began a company doing this. He owned his condo but had rented it out to someone. When she moved out, he moved in and he wanted help unpacking and organizing. These women got the whole place in tip-top shape in just a few hours. I think my neighbor was working at the time -- he works a lot and is hardly ever home. He was so impressed with these women that he hired them to organize his garage, too. He said it was beautiful when they were finished. My husband wanted to get these women's numbers.
