As I have mentioned, I''m about to stick my diamond in a dark box for a couple years and my only finger options are my yellow gold wedding band and a $16 celticish silver band I got (and wore) in Ireland. But in Ireland I had my diamond with me and could look at it and pet it and clean it and wear it around the house for a bit and put it away again. Now I will have nothing but my poorly cut diamond earrings (which I have no intention of upgrading out of sentimental reasons) to satiate me!! It''s ridiculous how bling deprived I already feel.

So I found something I like but it wouldn''t be done before I have to leave so there''s no point in making it right now and I will probably plan to have it made so that it can be shipped to me the next time I''m in the US. It will be a wide diamond band with about 3/4ctw. Anyway - what would you do for the next 6 months or whatever it takes before you''re back... would you buy a $300 white gold band that can be shipped quickly or would you just wear the silver band or would you wear your gold band (my watch is silver).

I know these are silly questions, but you''re helping me to distract from all of the packing and that''s a good thing lol

Hi Cehrabehra,

China has jewelry too!
It might be cool to look around when you get there, and get something the commemorates your time there.
For something as simple as a white gold band, I'm sure you'd have ot trouble finding it. Depending on the exchange rate you may even get a bargain.

Cehra, how about an estate something for some tide-over bling?

Like this: http://www.doverjewelry.com/catalog/eternity_rings_bands/estate_18k_gold_princess_cut_diamond_band.html ($349)

or this: http://www.doverjewelry.com/catalog/eternity_rings_bands/estate_yellow_gold_diamond_band_ring.html ($249 and very delicate)...Any good?

sunseeker - did you see the fake hand the ring was on lmao!! that was creepy!! I liked that 2nd band :)

But I think hopedream may have the right idea - not sure why I didn''t think of that, especially since I bought a silver band in ireland just for that reason lol When I was there last year I looked at diamond solitaires that were really small and very expensive and not good quality... but when I''m living there I''ll have more time to really look around - that''s a great idea!

I saw the latex hand LOL! I think the Dover contingent might be of the very old lady variety so hand models are out

Hunting in China is a great idea. I didn''t even manage to read HopeDream''s post ''cos I was too busy trying to cram as much bling as possible into $300!! You were right not to touch jewelry in Ireland with a barge-pole -- it''s a hermetically sealed rip-off zone! Good luck on the Chinese front.

I am sure you''ll find something great in China, it will be a great reminder of the time you will have spent there!!! The hunt is always the best part!!! When do you leave??

the movers come wed am and after 3 days of packing/loading we''re off to CA for about 10 days... we leave Dec 29th and arrive Dec 31st!!! Happy New Year!!!

I ditto getting something in China, it will be a lovely memory. Hope the move and the trip are smooth and that you have a great time out there. ((HUGS))

Thank you Gypsy :) I''m excited and nervous and really eager to just get on the road down to SD so we can relax a bit for the holiday!

Cehra, where will you be living in China? Will you be far from Hong Kong? If not, you could consider picking up something from there. HK is a great place for jewellery and the craftsmanship is wonderful.

I too think that something you''d buy in China would have very special meaning and memories to savour.

I wish you all the best and hope everything is better than you expected

of course I'll keep in touch lol We're going to have an american ip (or something like that) to access american sites like facebook that are blocked in china. the chinese turn a blind eye to the expats I guess

And no, I won't be near hong kong at all, though I do hope to see it someday. I'm going to be way up in the northeast - Dalian in liaoning province. (peninsula about half way between seoul and beijing)

Hehe, I''ll be home in Beijing (until Jan 3), so if you decide to visit the capital let me know!

Dalian is a great city, and China really does have some great jewelery. Diamonds tend to be pricier there since it isn''t really as "normal" there. But you can find great deals on really rich high karat gold pieces that you''d be hard pressed to find outside of asia. And if you''ve ever been interested in jadeite, it''s a great place to hunt for that too! China is also the capital for freshwater and saltwater pearl farming.
