I would love to work part time at Tiffany's which is in a depatment store in my city. Any ideas on what i need to do to get hired?
Does anyone else work at jewellery stores for the discount?
When I attended Graduate School a classmate and friend of mine worked part time at Tiffany's for the perks. She was collecting their silverware etc and it suited her at the time. Why don't you check their website for part time employment opportunities if that is something that appeals to you. Personally I could never do it. I don't have the personality to work in retail sales. Good luck!
Well, I got in a fight with an employee over Asshers vs cushions vs Legacies and complained to the manager and was offered a job. So, there's that option. But generally I think it's just going to their site or to the store and filling out an application.
Maybe part time won't be so bad, but I never have seen an employer that treats its people as badly as Tiffany does. I worked there for 2 1/2 years, most of it sheer misery. The store director, for instance, told me once that all the salespeople were lazy and greedy. That attitude permeated the store. They were inconsiderate of the sales force & sometimes downright vicious. People in the offices frequently in tears after being verbally raked over by managers. It was a destructive atmosphere & seems the entire personnel policy engenders it. Encouragement & praise very very rare; humiliation, simple nastiness more the norm. All behind the scenes, of course.
Someone called me once to ask the question you did: how do I get hired? I told her the same thing as above, & she said, "You're the third person to tell me that!"
My advice if you want to work there is to buy what you can early; it's not a nice place to be for very long.
Spend time on their website memorize the names of their items, the carat weights and variations. Go in during the week on a slower day. Dress nicely, but like you are shopping (not interview nice), wear some nice jewelry of your own. Tell them you are browsing for ideas for a wishlist to give your husband and that you just love their stuff.
Then look around and use their product names and show off your jewelry knowledge by using the right terminology. So "Oh is that a Bezet collection ring? I've never seen one in person, can I try it on?" Then compliment it. "I saw that paisley pendant on the website but it is so much nicer in person with the amazing pave!! I just love where it hangs". "Look at those rose cuts! I love your garden collection!" ... "The color on that tourmaline in that Legacy is to die for."
This is what I do naturally when I'm in there. And the last 6 times I've been in, I've been offered a job. Not kidding. If they say anything about working there just say, "Oh wow. I would love to work here! Would you need a resume or do you have an application for me to fill out." Get the business card of the manager and send them your resume or fill out their application.
