I just heard that for the 2nd time, in four years, Oprah is taking her entire staff (and any family members that wanna join them), on vacation, to a tropical paradise. She is paying for EVERYTHING!! It''s costing her a cool $ 750 000! WOW..how does one apply a job at Harpo? lol

Gah, is Oprah the only one who hasn''t gotten the memo? All sorts of companies are filing BK, there''s the whole bailout thing, etc., but the almighty Oprah doesn''t have to downsize? Good for her.

what an awesome gesture for her to do for her staff. She is an amazing woman!

that is awesmoe that she is keeping her employees and treating them so well... esp in these tough times!

Well, the economy is NOT affecting everyone to the same degree! I agree that Oprah likely has some phenomenal employees and treating them well, will ensure they stick around! On the other hand,
I'm sure there are many people out there that would love the chance to land a job with a company such as Harpo.
I know my husband treats his employees well, (takes them for dinner after work, gives them gift cards, tickets to events such as NHL games, golf courses..etc) as a thank you for all their hard work, on top of cash bonuses. Those that work hard are well rewarded. I think it motivates them to give 110% , and in turn keeps his company in high demand, which is crucial in times like this. There are HUGE companies laying off, and going on strike in our community, so it's great to see smaller companies, with great staff, still thriving!!

That''s one way to look at it, and normally I would agree with you that giving employees incentives creates a better work environment and more productive staff. However, I think right now is not the time for Oprah to be tooting her horn about spending money...

My boss usually gets sent on a trip to Hawaii for a bonus. The company did go ahead and sponsor the trip this year, but there were several cutbacks and no one spoke the company name the entire time he and his wife were there last week. The company wasn''t trying to HIDE the trip, but they were not advertising it, especially not to the stockholders.

What does your husband do Beau?

I did hear about her staff trip...it's actually a cruise. I know I'd gladly go!

If a company wants to splurge on their employee so long as they are NOT in debted to the governement, I see no wrong in this, but on the other hand if a company takes bailout money and or indebted to taxpayer then it IRKs me to no end

on lavish spending. DH works for a financial institution that yes, took bailout money, and they have cancelled numerous employee award trips. I totally understand and agree from the standpoint, but then they go on to spending hundreds of thousand to place an ad trying to tell the whole country that they cancelled the trips, that only cost oohh probably $250k! what the heck?
