Is that a word: totaled?

Anyway, I slammed into a visitor's car. I make it a policy never to insult our visitors. I don't derisively call them tourists. I don't make fun of them for wearing Safari outfits when they're in the US and not extras in Out of Africa. For many of them, it's a once in a lifetime experience to come here and it means a lot to them. And frankly they're the lifeblood of our economy. Ok, but I'm going to break my own rule at least this once.

This idiot visitor was stopped, and I mean at a dead stop, in the middle of the road, at a place where there was no possible (none, not even any driveway, none, nothing) turn. They went about a block past where they could have turned left to go into a beach parking lot and then mysteriously decided to bring their car to a dead stop in the middle of a 45 mph road for not only no good reason, for no reason at all.

I'm not blameless because I hit them. In fact, it's all on me because I hit them. Legally, WTF if they were stopped in the middle of a road (there was no car in front of them stopped, and why would there be, either).

But morally I'm only going to say that I am 1/2 responsible. What they did was beyond idiotic. It could have gotten us all killed.

So I'm driving along, I'm not paying enough attention, but I've driven this road 10,000 times, I never thought a visitor would be parked in the road.,

Smash! All I remember is seeing the front of my car basically collapsing as if I had hit a telephone poll, feeling the impact, and instantly knowing I had just wrecked my car.

I lost it.

I couldn't stop crying for maybe it was almost five minutes. Luckily, by the time the police got there I had pulled myself together.

Nobody was hurt and everyone keeps saying that's the important thing.

Yes, that and the fact my car is a '99 and so two months ago I dropped collision.

So I'm... um, please use your imagination because I can't say the word. :blackeye:

Danny,

I'm sorry! I'm so glad you are okay.

Danny, I'm so sorry, that must have been beyond scary. It was really dangerous for the people in that car to do that, I can't imagine what they were thinking. I'm glad nobody was hurt.

I just want to mention that a friend of mine was in a similar type of accident, and she felt ok at first and then after a day or two had pain and it turns out she had some muscle injuries - so please take care of yourself. Big hugs to you, this really stinks. (And I'm glad you're ok.)

well, danny, it really could have been worse.....when i have something like that happen i try and think about those that have it so much worse than me....or that perhaps having that happen right then and there kept me from being somewhere where something worse would have happened. sort of the glass 1/2 full thing.....

it was good that you broke down. its not good to keep those things in. also good you pulled together for the arrival of the officials. you're doing a lot better than you think!

i imagine you feel emotionally drained and entirely exhausted. get some rest. 20 years from now this will be a distant memory.

and have another good cry........

Oh Danny, that just bites! I too, am glad that you're OK, but I can only imagine how upsetting this is...I would have cried for a lot longer than 5 minutes! Hugs to you....

Yikes! I kind of know myself well enough that the cops would've had to pull me off of that idiot who stopped dead in traffic. Why people can't just go and turn around is beyond me. We have people do that on the highways here. It's caused a lot of fatal wrecks.

Wow, that sucks Danny. :(sad
Glad you're not hurt.
Big hug to you.

Really? The 'visitor' stopped in the middle of the road? Das ist echt ätzend! :nono:

I'm so sorry about your accident; hope everything gets resolved.

Aww, Danny! Bummer of the decade. I'm so sorry -- I did something similar once, only it was ALL my fault. Totaled my car, nobody hurt, thank heaven. Thought it was the end of everything, I was so mad. But I survived & now it's a memory. You will too. Many big hugs sent your way.

--- Laurie

I hope you feel better soon Danny. Glad no one was hurt.

Thanks, everyone. Truly.

I, well, I'm very upset right now.

Ella, I'm sorry. I didn't get your email until literally two minutes ago or I would have worded this post differently. Now it's too late to edit or delete it. Point taken. Again, I'm sorry.

:((

Danny
sorry to hear this new :(sad hugs to you.

Danny!!! :(( :(( :((
So glad you are ok - that sucks! STUPID tourists!!! :angryfire: In their defence, they are visiting paradise, and like you said it is a trip of a lifetime... still... who the H#L1 stops in the middle of the road?????

Hard to believe when you are going thru it, but it isn't the worst thing ever... and you ARE ok... but sending a hug HUG from afar!!
(DON"T SMOKE!!)

Danny!!! :(( :(( :((

happened to my brother who was riding on his motorcycle when the guy stopped in front of him.....that's why i say it could be worse: hospitalization, surgery, pins in ankle, unable to return to work because can no longer stand on his feet for any length of time, etc.

Hi Danny,

I hope the police ticketed the tourist. I know of no place where parking is legal in the middle of the road. You still carry some insurance, right. Call your insurer and tell him the car was parked in the middle of the road. He caused the accident. Ask them if you have recourse.?

I would have cried too. No small thing to have your car totaled. So Sorry.

Annette

Oh no - Danny I'm so glad you're okay!!!

But yeah, wow, that's awful! WHAT was the Visitor thinking???? There's NO good reason for sitting in the middle of the road - if it was car trouble they should've put out flares! And I'm SO sorry about the insurance ;( ;( ;(

I know they won't fix things, but lots of ::HUGS:: anyway!

PSA - *please* carry flares or cones in your vehicles. DH's labmate from Cali was in a terrible accident a couple of months ago - he hit a deer and apparently didn't have room to pull off the road, and was hit while sitting in the car waiting for the tow truck. He didn't make it.

Danny, this is the last thing you needed. I'm sorry, and I'd be very upset too. I know this is the last thing you need to hear right now, but don't smoke. Seriously, you're doing so well, don't let this derail your efforts. (Sorry if that was crass, but I do know what it's like and I know I'd be reaching for the pack...).

Hugs to you, and please do get checked over by a Dr if you can, just to be on the safe side.

Yssie, that's horrific. What a dreadful thing to happen.

Danny--the main thing is that you are OK.

Is there anyway you can collect from the idiot who caused you to crash?

Dang this stinks, glad you are OK, hopefully you wont have any physical after effects..take care.

I'm sorry the car was totalled but glad you weren't hurt. I hope everything will be OK.

So sorry Danny! Thank goodness you are OK, that is the main thing- that no one was seriously hurt. When I was in my twenties I totaled my car (I do think it's a word btw) and it was all my fault. I wasn't paying attention and bam- I rear ended this poor guy's car. He was super nice about it though but it was an awful experience nonetheless and because it was my fault I felt even worse if that makes sense. So take solace in the fact that it wasn't really your fault and that no one got hurt. Life is full of this stressful crap and when you come out of it OK you have to be thankful and appreciate all the good. So big hugs to you!

While the idiot who stopped in the street is an idiot, the three quotes below are problematic.

Is there anyway you can collect from the idiot who caused you to crash?

I'm not sure of the laws in Hawaii but here in California the crash is legally 100% Danny's fault,,,just as Danny stated in his OP.
It is against the law to drive a car faster than a speed from which you can safely stop, (no matter what happens in front of you) - period.

Yes, the vast majority of California drivers DO tailgate (and break the law), but a large number of people breaking a law does not make it legal or absolve the tailgater from responsibility.
Danny you admitted legal responsibility but claimed you had 50% moral responsibility - but morality varies; today there are 7 billion interpretations of morality.

I'm glad you are okay.((HUG))

So take solace in the fact that it wasn't really your fault

I wasn't speaking in legal terms Kenny. You are correct in that when you rear end another car it is your fault (at least in NY and as you wrote California). As I do not know the driving laws in Hawaii I was not commenting about them. I was just comforting Danny in his time of stress and aggravation. The other car was stopped in the middle of the road and Danny was not expecting them to be there. They should not have been there and he should have been paying better attention. Thank goodness no one was hurt and that was really the point of my post. And to give Danny much needed PS Hugs. ::)

Oh Danny! That sucks! I'm sorry that happened to you. I deal with idiot drivers all day long, so I feel your pain. I'm glad you're ok, though.

I'm so sorry to read this, but as hubby has always said to me," It's only a car. They make them every day."

If you're lucky enough to live in Hawaii, somewhere karma will kick in.

Crying is very cleansing and therapeutic so go ahead and have a good one. :wavey:

How terrible! Glad to hear you're ok. Hugs to you!

Ugh, I am so sorry. I think car accidents really shake a person up emotionally. hugs

I am so very sorry, Danny. They must have been lost and didn't know which way to go or something (which is not an excuse, of course). That is a danger with tourists. The last accident I was in, ironically, I was stopped in the road with my left turn signal on waiting to turn and the car behind me wasn't paying attention and plowed into the back of me going 45-50 without slowing down. My car was 1 month old. I am only mentioning that because your accident was so similar to mine, other than I knew where I was going and had my signal on!
